This might be a stupid question but I'm still trying get to learn about the all the Texas schools in the big 12.

Is there a rivalry between all the Texas schools or just Texas & Tech?

I know that Texas and Texas Tech each have a special hand sign do the other schools?

You've got the "bear claw" for Baylor. If you saw the OU-Baylor game, they hold up a bear claw when the school song is playing. And they "paw" at the air during some chants and stuff.

A&M is the King of school songs, chants, things to do with your body and hands, etc. Interesting to watch them during the Big 12 Tourney.

Outside of Texas, about the only thing Oklahoma will do is spellout "O" and "U" to a very simple tune the band plays. Kind of beats up the wood floor to bring the Sooner Schooner out.

My daughter attends A&M and they have the "Gig Em" sign with the closed fist and the thumb up. Another tradition that they do is "hump it", its a good thing, nothing vulgar. They stand and lean forward with their hands on their knees so that when they yell, their voices are projected better. It really works!

Someone posted in an earlier thread that every school in the old Southwest conference had a hand signal. I think it's fun but I don't know any of the signals except for the 4 schools now in the Big 12.

carolann.....were Baylor and Tamu in the same conference before as Texas and Texas Tech????? There are many who would like to see Baylor kicked out of the Big 12 because of their football team.....I'm glad they are part of the Big 12, they make women's basketball a lot of fun....and I really enjoy watching Lambert play, ditto Crockrum....but Lambert is just a phenomenal player to watch.

Swok34.......I agree that football at Baylor is "not ready for prime time". Someone, however recently said that when looking at all sports for men and women, tennis, track, volleyball, baseball, etc.... that Baylor was very close to the top in overall championships since the Big XII was formed. Do you know if that is true?

zo, I'm not really familiar with a lot of other sports....except
how do you ignore football?.....I follow women's basketball AVIDLY....can tell you where each and every team sits in the standing from week to week and how plays for whom......

I do follow OU softball, but I'm not real familiar with a lot of the other Big XII teams, except who's fairly hot...i.e. Nebraska last year and Texas A & M did really good in 2000. And I certainly can't even begin to tell you who's "ranked"....there's also not as much information on the internet about softball or any other sport beyond basketball, speaking specifically about women's sports.

I do know that Baylor had a really good baseball team in 2000, not sure about last year. Oklahoma was crappy in baseball last year.

I really try to watch the "Big XII showcase" that's on Fox on Saturday morning, but half the time I only catch that during basketball season.....so, I knew Colorado won the champ in cross country track last year. And Texas has a pretty good swim team. Other than what I can pick up off that show, I really am pretty ignorant in other sports except women's basketball and like I said, how can you be a Big XII fan and not follow football (it's everywhere and huge). Though I will say, it certainly pays a lot of bills so our women's team's are well funded.

Each of the schools in the old SW conference had hand signals: Tech: Guns Up, fist with index and forefinger extended
Texas: Hook 'em Horns, fist with index and little finger extended
T A&M: Gig 'em, fist with thumb up
Baylor: not sure what it is called but they make a bear paw

Hand signs are used during school songs and special cheers.

The other SW conf schools were: TCU, SMU, Houston, Rice and Arkansas (at one time). I think Houston replaced Arkansas when they went to the SEC.

Baylor has an outstanding baseball team, ranked in the top 25 for the last few years and they are very good in track also.

About the rivalries, Texas A&M and UT probably have the biggest ones.

Oh yes, I think it was a great question.

What are some of the traditions with cheers, songs etc at other B12 schools?

I'm new to this board, but read with interest comments about Baylor in the Big 12. When the conference was formed, both the Texas Governor and Lt. Governor were Baylor alumni. Not sure how much that helped them get in, but I'm glad they are part of the conference.
