OT: Bulletin board civility

Question of the day about civility in a bulletin board community:

What should happen to someone who gets multiple user names and posts on a bulletin board in a dishonest manner in order to create controversy?

Why would someone do such a thing?

If you found out you were being duped by such an imposter, what would be your first reaction?

My take: I think such behavior is rather pathetic. I would be sad that such a person feels that it is fun to deceive an online community.

If you see swok34 on other message boards, it's me. I use the same username everywhere.....and I actually like it when other people do also.

I don't know if you are talking about Hoopscoop or not....but, you and I have been here at Hoopscoop for about the same amount of time AND we've seen a few and a very few "trolls", for lack of a better word....but, those that stumble along to encite controversy.....they typically kind of get tired of us because most of us don't really bite and get our gall up, I suppose.

I really try not to get into a "goad", because it's not intelligent basketball conversation, shall we say. Not to say that I won't defend OU or one of it's players, if I feel "incorrect" information is getting out into the world http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Bulletin boards, etc., offer some anonymity that some enjoy and some use for their own amusement. I'm not the most calculating person in the world, so it amazes me that someone would take time to adopt different personas just to stir up the pot....they must be pretty bored. But clearly they do. It seems to defeat the purpose of having an honest discussion.

Don't most boards require a real email address to register and don't permit you to have multiple accounts using the same email address...course that doesn't stop someone from having a hotmail, yahoo, etc email addresses too.

Well as has been pointed out I have two names that are legal on this board. KSUron and Jimi. Of course one difference is that I announced my change (and I did change, I don't use KSUron anymore) and the reasons for the change. No biggie but they were sufficient reasons to me. On ocassion someone who missed the change asks abour KSUron and I usually respond. If you see me on the ESPN boards or anywhere else I'm usually Jimi or something close like Jimi3.

I did have to register with a different email addy. No problem since for professional reasons I have two email addys. If I knew how to kill my old registration as KSUron I would. I am however, not much of a techie.

I enjoy this board and hope most people continue to use it honestly, but let's not get too stuffy unless we have to.

Jimi, I only wish all posters could be as civil as you, myself included. You are certainly not the subject of my topic.

I missed your change announcement awhile back so I'm one who did ask what happened to KSURon. I just thought Jimi was another good KSU fan. As a group, KSU fans have to be some of the most even keeled fans on the board.
