This is mostly links and misc info. As I see more, I'll add to this thread and would love to see what you find if you are interested in learning more about our new B12 member from the East.

****************

The first thing which jumped out at me was the coaching staff: Mike Carey, head coach is white. His associate head coach and his two assistant coaches are black. One of the assistant coaches is female. Signifance? Probably none - it is just so unusual that it jumped out at me.

The official web site:

Check out the “logo” at

Obviously this is a direct challenge to the OU Stiletos! :rotflol:

The team went to Greece and Italy in August

Mike Carey, head coach

“...how did Carey turn the rag-tag program he inherited from Alexis Basil, a program that had won 11 and lost 44 in the previous two years before his rival, a program that had lost to Connecticut, 100-28, in 2001 in a game played at Morgantown High, into the nation’s No. 11 team?”

This is an interesting article from ‘10:

http://timeswv.com/wvu_sports/x410004287/Carey-s-tough-style-working-for-WVU-8200-women

Coached HS girl’s BB for 7 years

He had played BB at Salem (DII) and returned there as an assitant coach for one year and then became head coach in ‘88.

In ‘01, he came to UVa as Head Coach of the women’s BB team. In 10 years his team was the WNIT twice, and went to the big dance 5 times, making it to the second round four times. They lost to Baylor last year in the second round, at Baylor.

In ‘04 and ‘10 he was named the Big East Coach of the Year.

He evidently has a temper and .... Well, evidently a coach isn’t suposed to say this about a ref:

"I can't talk about the referee," Carey said. "I would love to. The female, unbelievable, referee. I didn't say their names so maybe I won't get in trouble. Unbelievable. Unbelievable calls down the stretch. It's unbelievable."

He is on Twitter: Do you think he follows Bill?

Unfortunately, it reads like some PR flunky writes his stuff. NOTHING about the move to the B12 announcement.

*******
