I played basketball so I am not completely uninformed - a looooong time ago http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif; however, please tell me how/why the "up and under" or "step through" is not a walk. Chantal Anderson of Vandy just did the move. Here it is, she recieved the ball in the post. She used a pivot foot to swing around. Then she used her non-pivot foot to step toward the basket, then she picked up her pivot foot before she shot. I am seeing post players do this alot this year and much of time the fans jump up and yell "walk" and when I played ball it would have been a walk. Did I miss a rule change??? I've wondered about it all year and finally thought I would post the question. Perhaps it has been talked about and I missed the discussion.

My impression is that it's just like a layup. It's pretty much impossible to make a layup without lifting a pivot foot after picking up the dribble. Anyone have a rulebook in front of them?

For further examples, see every basket Angie Welle ever made. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Yes, you are correct - in a layup situation, you are allowed the two steps. However, if the player were not shooting and lifted the pivot foot, it would be a walk. And this particular move used to be a walk, and in some situations it is called a walk. Players did not used to do it - it has only become popularized in the past couple of years. I do remember Angie Welle doing it, and more and more post players are using the step through now so I wondered if anyone else thought this is odd or if I just need to get used to it as it is here to stay. It seems like a very big advantage to long-legged post players.

I kindly refer to it as the "Angie Welle Waltz".

I don't remember which game it was that I saw/heard this in but ......

One of the commentators at a game yesterday or Sunday was discussing this in referrence to one of the European players in the game. Her comment was that this 'extra step' when going to the basket was legal and you see it all the time with the European players but that not many of the American players are doing it yet. And many of the American fans still think of it as a 'travel'.

It's funny, because as predictable as it is (especially when Angie Welle did it), no one seems to be able to stop the cross over......and that includes my husband when we play one on one in the drive way! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Well, there you go - I guess it is legal and fans like me will just have to get used to it - but dang it, it still "looks" like traveling. I guess the post players need to get up to speed because it sure is an advantage for those who use it. Thanks for all the input.
