13,466 fans!!!! WOW!!!!! Kansas State Womens Basketball has stepped up in the world. And they treated their fans to another fine performance, in which the Wildcats became the latest to beat on Nebraska early and often.

After the Huskers got the opening basket, on a nice drive to the hole by Stephanie Jones, Kansas State opened up the first of two runs to take an 18-7. KSU was rockin' and Nebraska was faced with something that haven't done since January of last year. They were forced to climb back after being behind by 10 or more (Nebraska is 1-17 in their last twenty games when they are down by 10 points or more at any time during the game)

But the Huskers made runs mid first half. Sparked by a nice deep three from K.C. Cowgill (she hit every three pointer she shot in the first half), the Huskers got as close as 6, before Kansas State retaliated with Laurie Koehn, who would fire the first of six three to break the run, and spark a Wildcat surge that put them up 45-28 before a pair of Husker scores made the halftime mark 45-32.

The second half was even better. Katie Robinette continued her aggressive play, pouring in a bucket that cut the lead to four with 14:22 to go.
But the final run went to Kansas State, sparked by Kendra Wecker and Laurie Koehn, who seemed to get many open looks tonight, Kansas State got their crowd fired up again and kept Nebraska at arm length.

THE SKINNY ON KANSAS STATE.
What a difference a year makes. Koehn and Wecker played super ball today. Nicole Ohlde was her usual self. This team played a fine game, in front of the biggest crowd they've ever had, and did well.
What really impressed me is how even though they are young, the didn't get tight or get fazed by the situation. They didn't let the crowd and the feeling get to them. The Wildcats really took care of business like a veteran team, that is thing that really stuck out. Even when Nebraska made a threating run, somebody for KSU made play.
I have to confess, I didn't think KSU was 100% for real. The showed the type of team they are today.
Enjoy your NCAA Tournament Bid, Wildcat fans. Your kids will earn it.

WHAT WORKED FOR NEBRASKA TONIGHT

1. Katie Robinette, Offensively: 16 points, 12 rebounds NOT BAD AT ALL!
It was good to see Katie breaking out and having a solid game. These are the performance that the freshman from South Sioux City was brought in for.

2. Stephanie Jones: 12 points. Very Solid offensive game, she went stronger to the hole, took her chances, and made them work. To be honest, Nebraska made a mistake earlier in the game by going away from her after she missed two lay-ups.

3. K.C. Cowgill: 5 threes. ALL OF THEM CLUTCH!!!!

WHAT DIDN'T WORK FOR NEBRASKA

1. Defensive Strategy: Sanderford seemed to enter the game more conscious of the KSU interior, but Laurie Koehn's 6 three pointers opened up everything. Koehn had TOO MANY OPEN LOOKS!
Does any Nebraska guard play defense? Any one of them?

2. Shooting. 25-for-78? 7-for-26 from threes? Whatever K.C. Cowgill had the rest of the team caught it, and whatever cure Cowgill found didn't reach the rest of the team.

Outlook: This Nebraska team played hard. With the exception of the first 4-5 minutes of play where the big crowd got to them, the lasses fought back. They could have been blown out, the clawed back to a fighting chance to win.
But what I finding out with this team after 3 conference losses is a general lack of talent. Nebraska is at the point where they can play their best game, and still lose to the better teams in the league regardless.
Tonight, I will not rip these young ladies. I only rip them when I feel they've quit or not put up the effort. Against K-State, they fought hard and put up the effort. They need to shoot better and defend better.

But they also need a Head Coach who recognizes when things aren't working. In first 6 minutes of the game, Paul Sanderfraud didn't do that. I think Paul was too concerned with inside, and didn't put a body on Koehn. Such is a sign of pour strategic doctrine.
Coach Sanderford seems to make a lot of these in the last three seasons.
The team is fighting hard. I wish the coach would, too.

It is intriquing to wonder how any coach could devise a gameplan that frequently leave Koehn open for a good look at a 3. Even if you concentrate or helping low, somebody has to know where she is, don't you think?

KSU has not faltered, yet. Will they tire or be in it to the end? If these ladies confidence isn't cracked, they will be tough and get progressively tougher.
