Texas Tech @ Texas - The rivalry continues.
Current State of Affairs, Texas
I confess I had no idea how big that one point win over ISU would be to the Texas fans. The sleeping fans have awoken. A lot of doubters are saying, ‘Hmm, maybe this team is pretty good; maybe Conradt has a little coaching left in her’. A win keeps the fan momentum building. Winning the home games against the other South teams goes a long way to help the Longhorns stay near the top of the Big 12 standings. Personally, I’m dreaming of a top 4 NCAA seed and 2 NCAA games at home. I hope the team will have more discipline and continue to play one game at a time.
Current State of Affairs, Texas Tech
It's gut check time for the Lady Raiders. For the first time in a long time, Texas has the momentum. The Lady Raiders have stumbled. Some fans are worried. Is the team worried? A win over Texas in Austin would give a big morale boost to the team and the fans. If the Lady Raiders lose, they’ll be 1-3 in conference staring at many more tough games ahead.
2001/2002 Key Player Changes
The L Raiders are w/o P Pierson, D Brown, and Kat O’Neal. They’ve added Cisti Greenwalt, a talented but green center. Texas is w/o J Woods but has added the very talented H Schreiber and regained the services of A Hastings, A Sare, and T Dillard who played in Lubbock last year but I think was injured before the Austin game.
What will happen? I don’t know. The rivalry factor alone always makes the Texas/Texas Tech games unpredictable. I think the Longhorns have the edge this weekend but there's still a little worried voice inside my brain.
Factors in Texas' Favor: We know who are point guard is. Larkin has the full support of her teammates and coaches. Tech is struggling at point. Larkin shoots more and better (not true of many Big 12 match-ups with Larkin) than Candi White and is a better defender. Perkins can do more when she plays the 2. Our frontcourt is excellent and has yet to be beat by mere height this year. For Tech: Greenwalt is green; Ayers is struggling; Ellison is solid but not scary.
Factors that could favor Tech: Jia Perkins is always dangerous. Ritchie and Tarr can really light things up. Just because Ayers has been struggling doesn't mean she will struggle Sunday. At times this year, the Texas offense has bogged down. The Longhorns are shooting better and have more scoring options this year than last, but are still one of the lower scoring teams in the Big 12. They don't want to have to match 3's. Cisti Greenwalt is 6'5". She is almost bound to get some shots and some rebounds on that alone, isn't she?

Just don't tell Jody. She said last year there are no rivals for Texas.

Seriously, very good analysis CarolAnn. You've been reading those notes that Tech fans have been passing back and forth. er... uh... I guess RP is a PUBLIC forum.
I don't think I can add much to your excellent summary. For the first time in a few, I don't think Tech goes to Austin with the better chance to win. Gulp! That is hard to swollow. Some of the Lady Raiders have played more games in the Drum than any other college court away from Lubbock (HS championships), so maybe it won't feel so much like a road game. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
I look forward to seeing Schreiber play. I'm not too sorry Tech won't face J Woods again. She tore it up in Lubbock last year.
As I stated at the beginning of the season, I would rather Tech beat Texas than anyone else. This is the 64th time these two have played and Tech's got to catch up on that head to head record, ya know? Plus, there was that home win streak thing last year.....
May it be a hard fought, close, non-controversial game with the best officiating in the history of wcbb (one can dream, can't one?). Thank goodness the TV folks understand the great (recent) history between Texas and Tech and will pick up both games this year. Great for women's basketball in the state!

Tech, IMO, has the edge in Turnover margin. If Tech can force Ut into many turnovers and limit their own then I think this game is a reality to win.
Tech must keep the rebound margin close and respectable. Ut is very good at crashing the glass and Tech must not be outrebounded by more than 5.
Candi is a great defender and while her offense might not be the best in the league she can knock down some key shots (she hit a three in austin last year ya know).
Tech has the edge in offensive guard play with Amber Tarr, Natalie Ritchie, and Jia Perkins. They will have to carry our offense to start out and I think that to win they will need to get 50 points between the three of them. (JP 20 AT 15 NR 15)
Post play will be the key for the LR. If they can get 25 pts. from the three of them and keep Ut off the offensive boards then Tech will have a chance to win. Good fundamental defense in the post will be key also and they will have to be careful not to let SS or TC go off for double doubles.
Ut will have to play man to man (which they always do) to beat Tech. If Tech can hold Ut under 60 pts. then Tech wins. If not then it can be a tough one to pull out for the LR.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Tech get a 2-3 zone going to try and stop the interior play of SS and TC, but will have to be careful not to let ASare to heat up.
Keys for Texas Tech:
Force Turnovers and Limit their own
Keep Rebounds respectable
Interior Post Defense
Guard play from the Trio
Ok...there is my 1/2 cent worth. I am really excited to be able to see this game on TV. It'll be a good one but Tech will come fired up for this (as will Larkin) and my prediction is that Cisti will come ready after Marsha's comments about the terrible post play in Missouri. Amber Tarr will have a good game as she will be looking to improve on leadership and momentum of the team. Natalie Ritchie will continue where she left off in Austin last year lighting up from beyond the arc. Jia Perkins will drive drive drive, pentrating to the paint for that sweet pull up jumper she has. Jolee Ayers will also continue where she left from last year (5-5 or something like that from the field) as she likes playing at the Erwin Center as we all know http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif . Here's hoping for no injuries! Go Lady Raiders!!

Great post guys. This season has me in a tizzy and I just don't know what to think about everything. Each game seems to be a new adventure. With the way Texas is playing, I'd say they have the edge for sure. I hope it's a good game whatever the outcome.
GO TECH!
Great analysis, guys. Not much I can add other than...
TEXAS...
FIGHT...
TEXAS...
FIGHT...

I for one would love to see that zone. Schreiber will pick that apart with not only shots but great passes. Sare is ready for the zone also. I just don't know what TT might do. I am excited because every game another opponent defensive focus frees up another Lady Longhorn to Step up. So far this is really helped the team gain confidence in each individual role whether it means offensive like Sare's two high point games or defensive speciality by Asha or Anissa. Good Luck Lady Longhor

ditto, press.........I think that could be said for every team in the conference, well maybe not Kansas or Texas A & M.
Can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than watching these 2 meet.

ok, must confess, I'll probably be rooting for Texas Tech, since Texas and Kansas State are left among the unbeatens with OU...
hope the same can be said for OU on Sunday.

Texas, I know very little about computers, but I managed to get hooked up to listen to Lady Raider games on the internet. Try this:
goladyraiders.com
click on schedules/results
in the far right column click on audio broadcast for the Texas game
this will take you to yahoo.com
follow the instructions to hook up with either Window Media (the one I downloaded) or RealPlayer
it takes about an hour to download it
put it on your hard drive
whenever I listen to a Lady Raider game I go to goladyraiders.com and click on audio broadcast for whatever game is being played and it connects me with yahoo.com Window Media.
Better yet, get advice from someone who is more computer literate than I am.
Good luck.

http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/redface.gif http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif UH,OH. I forgot. It is not dignified for THE University to acknowledge rivals. "WE'RE TEXAS" I was in California for a number of years and forgot some of my upbringing.

Jody may say that in public. But you should see how her coaching staff reacts to the Tech game in the post game talks with the fans.

Ha! I knew that Jody was practicing coach speak. The "every game is a big game, the most important game of the season is the next one...." line that all coaches have to say in public.
I don't see Tech playing zone. That would be a very rare move by Sharp and she usually isn't full of surprises. Not that she hates zone. A 2-3 zone was THE defense that Tech ran in the early 90's, including the NC year. It would be a good idea to change things up for this game IMO and try to get some better rebounding position, but I just don't see it happening.
Hey Texas, doesn't UT do an internet broadcast of the games each week or is it sporadic? I know I had difficulty picking up the Tech broadcast of the Overtime game in Austin two years ago and listened to the UT broadcast on the radio. The play by play guy that night was good, I think he does Fox Sports SW stuff. The analyst, she was a homer but not bad.
Here is a link to the Yahoo! broadcast page which has links for most radio coverage of wcbb on a daily basis.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaw/live.html
BTW, they show a Texas broadcast of the game on Sunday. Click on the Texas link in the Audio Coverage column. Maybe HoopScoop could add this to the main page.
I am disappointed this year that Crystal Boles is not doing the analysis on Tech radio. She does the color for the TV broadcast on the Tech network of home games now instead. Melissa Maines doesn't do analysis every game on the radio and she is more of a homer than Boles. But Maines is funny sometimes because she gets so emotionally into plays and her expressions make me laugh.

Check out the main page. This isn't the best BB site for nothing. Hoop has audio links under the schedule on the right hand side of the page. Also easy access to each team's previews.
Kudos Hoop.

All Texas games have radio and internet broadcast. I've always used Yahoo or Fansonly to access the broadcast but there is also a link on the Texas 'game day' feature.

What a game this should be. I got my tickets (14th row center court) a while back. Texas Tech is a great team with a great coach. They will fight hard. Hope Texas has it in them to pull this thing out. It would be a huge win for us. Go Lady Horns!!!!!
