Oklahoma's Chelsi Welch and Texas Tech's Erin Grant were Co-Freshmen of the Year.

Jody Conradt Coach of the Year

Nicole Ohlde Player of the Year

Jamie Carey - Newcomer of the Year

well Nina Normas was a pretty good freshman i would say. Her shot gave us the win over Tennessee, and Tech did not have an answer for her in Lubbock.

Same problem Dionnah faced last year - a freshman who doesn't start, doesn't have a chance.

How on earth did Sophia Young not win? Grant is good, and Welch made a lot of big shots this year for OU, but Sophia did everything for the Bears.

It's called not enough votes.

Erin Grant and Sophia Young were awarded weekly Rookie of the Week awards three times this season. Welch was not recognized for that award during the season.

The voters for FOY honors continue to puzzle me!

I could see co-FOY between Grant/Young. Chelsi was very good this year, but frankly I was shocked to see her name. Her stats and play don't hold a candle to Sophia's overall game this year, IMHO. Grant gets my vote because of the pressure placed on her this year and her productive results. However, they're all Texas girls, so just call me a homer.

I think Sophia was robbed! Beware of Sophia!

You're a homer!

I heartily agree that Young should have been FOY, but I certainly don't see that Grant was any more deserving than Welch. You talk about all the pressure placed on Grant, but all she had to do was be a cog in a smoothly running offensive machine. All the other players were experienced and comfortable in their roles. Welch on the other hand, had to go in as a freshman and become the "go-to" player on a team in total chaos. In my opinion, Welch was the one with the pressure.

Having said the above, and trying not to be a total homer, I thought Grant was the more proficient of the two; She looked less like a freshman, though in a less demanding role. From a coaches' standpoint, Welch was the one who opposing teams had to draw up gameplans to stop. I expect that's why she got coaches' votes.

You're saying that the point guard position is not as important as the shooting guard position. Ok...we have a difference of opinion there.

No, that's not even close to what I'm saying. No position on the court is automatically more important than any other. Would you say that Grant had a bigger role than Pierson or Perkins? Of course not.

What I did say (or at least intended to) was that Welch's role in Oklahoma's offense this year was more pressure-packed than Grant's role in Tech's offense. More of a "buck stops here" kind of thing, IMHO.

Soonerman,

Your comments are dead on. Its interesting to see what the coaches thought. I sure be Conradt voted for Welch.

I'm obviously prejudiced, but I would have voted for Sherri Coale for Coach of the year. She lost 4 players to knee injuries, her most experienced player on the floor most of the year was a true sophomore and still won 20 games. Super job by Sherri and her assistants.

I agree, MsProudSooner.

As a Tech fan, I think I can say without bias that Sherri Coale is the best coach in this conference. I am undecided as to #2; it's just too close a contest between three or four different people.
