The SEC starts tomorrow...and I think plenty of others are getting started in the next 2 days. I like having games to keep up with at work http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
http://www.secsports.com/index.php?well_id=2&url_publish_channel_id=508#sched
Here's the schedule on the other tourney's:
http://espn.go.com/ncw/s/2002_03/confsked.html
I'm sure there are live stats available for other games, but I really like the job the SEC Conference does....maybe the Big XII could borrow some hints from them http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
The Big XII has done a better job this past year and if I recall, had live stats for the tourney last year:

Started to put up a new topic for this, but figured it fit just as well here.
A new Voepel column on the upcoming tournaments, with emphasis on the Big 12 (naturally). http://espn.go.com/ncw/columns/voepel/1519043.html Time flies when you're having ...
Gotta remember to set the VCR to catch the SEC tomorrow. Of course, I will be home in time for the BIG game. I think most of the wisdom around here sez TT. Think I'll stick with KSU.

Voepel's article is a really, really good one.....
I kinda feel like she does:
Someone will ask if I'd heard the latest on Iraq, and I'll say, "If K-State beats Texas Tech, it's got the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament. Or, if Texas loses Wednesday night to Oklahoma, K-State would also get the top seed because it has the tiebreaker over Texas.

That's funny. I thought I was the only one...
I hope to make it to Dallas next Thursday and meet a few of you like-minded folks, but it's still up in the air right now as far as my schedule, the kids, etc.

Looks like all seeds held in the SEC, which by the way, all games are on TV in the Oklahoma area today.
The Big 10, however.........had an #11 seed defeat the #6 seed.
Michigan defeated Illinois. The Big 10 + 1 is interesting....
both the 4 and 5 seed both get byes the first day and play each other the second day.
JohnHenry
03-07-2003, 12:32 PM
So the 1 seed gets the winner of the 4/5 game? or they play the winner of the 8 game? WTF?
And what's up with the SEC and Big 10 getting 2 weeks off before the Dance? Why doesn't the SEC play a 16-game conference schedule like we do?

JH......the 4/5 in the Big 10 goes on to play the winner of the 1/8 or 9 seed.....In this case, the #8 Indiana earned the berth.
I guess with 11 teams in a conference, it's about the only way you could do it. The SEC is set up just like the Big XII, though there game times are different.....and the #2 seed actually gets to play the 2:30 game, rather than 6 pm in the Big XII.
The SEC takes NO days off....it's 4 days of basketball in 4 days, rather than the Big XII who have a day from the semi's to the champ game.

Here's the Big 10 schedule. After looking at it, it makes much more sense. Seeds #1-5 get a bye, with with remaining 6 teams playing to eliminate 3. Then it's your normal 8 team bracket.
First round
Thursday, March 6
Game 1 - (8) Indiana 52, (9) Wisconsin 51
Game 2 - (7) Iowa 70, (10) Northwestern 58
Game 3 - (11) Michigan 83, (6) Illinois 59
Quarterfinals
Friday, March 7
Game 4 - (8) Indiana vs (1) Penn State, noon
Game 5 - (5) Michigan State vs (4) Ohio State, 2:30 p.m.
Game 6 - (7) Iowa vs (2) Minnesota, 6 p.m.
Game 7 - (11) Michigan vs (3) Purdue, 8:30 p.m.
Semifinals
Sunday, March 9
Game 8 - Game 4 winner vs Game 5 winner, 3:30 p.m.
Game 9 - Game 6 winner vs Game 7 winner, 6 p.m.
Championship
Monday, March 10
Game 10 - 7 p.m. (ESPN2)

You're right - it does make sense. Only fair way to do it with eleven teams, I guess.
Wow. Lowly Michigan stomped an absolute mudhole in Illinois. I had thought the Illini were a bubble team, perhaps? No longer, I guess...
Here's an odd one - ACC tourney
http://espn.go.com/ncw/s/2003/acc.html
You'd think it fairer to have the 8/9 teams have a 'play-in' game with Duke getting the winner, with 7 seed Clemson pitted vs. UNC., but they have duke vs. 9 seed with 7/8 playing for a chance at the Tarheels (2).

Great article from Voepel...
I always feel like I eat, breathe, and dream basketball in March/early April and then it's totally over and I want it back!
So, Arkansas' reward for escaping Bama yesterday is getting to play LSU yet again...but this time with somewhat of a home game atmosphere. WCH.com has Arkansas as their dark horse to win the SEC.if they could find the same form they had early in the conference, they could do some damage...but if Arkansas can't win it, I'm pulling for LSU. Got to try to listen to that game this afternoon and finish a report.

This is the game I really would like to see on TV....just can't justify leaving work at 2:30, when I'm off next week AND took an 1 1/2 hour lunch today http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif
I completely fazed out your second question, JH.....
And what's up with the SEC and Big 10 getting 2 weeks off before the Dance? Why doesn't the SEC play a 16-game conference schedule like we do?
I wondered that, too.....but both of these conferences hold their men's and women's tourney's seperate from one another. I'm not sure about the Big 10, but the SEC hold's their men's tourney late next week. I wondered about the 14 game conference schedule, too. I know that the SEC is split up into east and west like the Big XII is split up into north and south....though, as we know, with the Big XII, the divisional lines determines the schedule.....I don't know how they have their schedules set up..I almost want to say that they play every team once....and only play 3 teams twice http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/confused.gif But I really have no idea if I'm even right.

I think you're on the right track at least. Seems like it rotates on who you play multiple times and the division doesn't matter.
Maybe bball girl knows.

Yeah, the SEC all play each other once and they play 3 teams twice and my memory says that in basketball they really don't pay attention to the East/West division (that really comes to play in football) in the sense that it affects who they play twice. I think they have some kind of rotation...but my memory may be faulty.

#1 Seed Penn State got taken to the wall, tied with about 2 minutes left in the game...I didn't follow it, but I did see that comment....by #8 seed Indiana...
Penn State pulled it out 67-64.

. . . and Minnesota DIDN'T pull it out. Iowa 80-77. Didn't surprise me all that much.
The Minnesota result doesn't surprise me either.
What has surprised me is how they maintained as high a ranking as they have had through the season. They had a great record against a relatively weak schedule to start. Then they lose to unranked team but fall only 2 or 3 spots. Didn't make sense to me at the time and still doesn't.
Maybe now the pollsters will be a bit more realistic in their evaluation of MN. If not, surely the selection committee will be.
JohnHenry!
Only someone who reads the UT football board would know what "stomped a mudhole" in someone means. I had to laugh out loud when you said Michigan stomped a mudhole in Illinois. That was pretty funny!

I saw the last 10 minutes of the South Carolina & Miss State game....and I hope I have the right "Miss"...what a great game.
South Carolina came back from 10 down in like 2 minutes...and almost made it back, but they didn't...#4 seed beats #5 seed.

Minnesota finished in second place overall in the Big 10, which was the third strongest conference in the country as measured by non-conference RPI. They had a 1-1 record against #14 Penn State (the Big 10 champion) and a 1-0 record against #12 Purdue. Their only losses up until today were to Penn State, RPI #24 Ohio State, RPI #32 Illinois, and RPI #53 Michigan State. Their own RPI (#22) is artificially low because of their weak non-conference schedule. They deserved their high ranking, but today's loss will definitely hurt their seeding.

The Vanderbilt/Georgia game was awesome last night....
I can't believe we got the quarterfinals here in Oklahoma yesterday and DON't get the semi's..... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif
Guess they don't want us to miss the Texas boys HS championship or that show Beyond the Glory.
swok, you want to know what is depressing?
The number of women's basketball games on TV this weekend in Denver (non-digital cable) is exactly...
zero.
Not one televised game for the first time this year. Great time for it too, since the season is apparently over, as far as Comcast Cable (until recently AT&T) is concerned.
But of course, we have men's games, including such traditional Rocky Mountain favorites as Central Florida-Troy State, UNC Asheville-Radford, Tennessee Tech-Austin Peay, and East Tennessee State-Chattanooga. Very sad.

YCN....I think there are some on ESPN tomorrow.
I know the SEC final, and maybe some of the ACC games, though I'm not wild about the ACC for some reason.
I have digital cable and you would think that they would include some of these women's games on "Full Court", but I checked.....
nada. Heck, I probably would have ordered the mid-season deal...
maybe.

Yeah...there's a bunch of games on tomorrow on ESPN and Fox Sports on Sunday. Mark Lewis at the wbb list posts a weekly tv schedule, so I just put it up.
I'm not a fan of Miss State...but hoped they would take out Tennessee and I'm hoping for a rematch between Rutgers and UConn in the Big East tourney in Piscataway.
First round Saturday, March 8
Game 1 - (5) Virginia Tech 66, (12) West Virginia 60
Game 2 - (8) Seton Hall 58, (9) Georgetown 55
Game 3 - (7) Miami 77, (10) Syracuse 64
Game 4 - (11) Pittsburgh vs (6) Notre Dame, 8 p.m.
Quarterfinals Sunday, March 9
Game 5 - (5) Virginia Tech vs (4) Boston College, noon
Game 6 - (8) Seton Hall vs (1) Connecticut, 2 p.m.
Game 7 - (7) Miami vs (2) Rutgers, 6 p.m.
Game 8 - Notre Dame-Pittsburgh winner vs (3) Villanova, 8 p.m.
Semifinals Monday, March 10
Game 9 - 5 p.m.
Game 10 - 7:30 p.m.
Championship Tuesday, March 11
Game 11 - 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
My mistake, the ACC semis are being shown, along with the Conference USA and SEC finals.
Sporting events are supposed to be shown in gold in the Zap2It listings, but they weren't for those 4 games tomorrow. That's why I missed them.
It is still a pathetic offering, IMO.

And a rematch of Tennessee and LSU - the #1 and #2 seed of the SEC is set for tomorrow at 3 pm central on ESPN2. I really enjoy watching the SEC play; I'm reminded a whole, whole lot of the Big XII in that they play similar types of ball and play physical like the Big XII.
Vanderbilt lost to LSU 78-69, though the score is not indicative of the game......it was a close game. Think it must have turned into the foul and free throw game at the end.

Pac 10 semis on Fox Sports Net should be interesting. Washington (who Tech beat 99-67) back in Nov
has a terrifc guard in Giuliana Mendiola the Pac 10 Player of the Year. Guili had 29 points and 11 rebound...she's all hustle. Should be a great game with Arizona...they've split their two meetings this year. AZ has a great player in Shawntinice Polk.
2 Washington (22-6) vs. #3 Arizona (21-7), 12:30 p.m.
#1 Stanford (24-4) vs. #4 UCLA (18-10), 3 p.m.

Well, I will enthusiatically second that, Bball Girl. Washington is definitely one of the most fun teams to watch, and EVERYBODY can and will shoot the three! (I just looked, they are 233-631 .369) If they are hitting . . .
They are also one of the tightest teams you will ever see. Even before the Kayla Burt incident, you could really sense what great friends they all were.
A lot (make that most) of the California press felt that the choice of Mendiola as POY was wrong, shoulda been Powell, Greco, etc. They were whining even BEFORE she was selected. But you don't have to watch the Huskies very many times to see that she is pure magic.
Mechelle Voepel wrote an article on UW and the rest of the Pac 10 earlier this year. Left Coast still left out of national spotlight http://espn.go.com/ncw/columns/voepel/1505010.html
This is an old article from when the Mendiola sisters were freshmen, but it serves as a good introduction to them and has a link to the rest of the UW site. http://gohuskies.ocsn.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/031201aaf.html
I fell in love with the team in 2001 when SMS went out there and whipped them 104-87 in Spokane. What a game! The grace they exhibited and appreciation for their opponent is one of those rare things you don't get to see often enough in life.

Glad to see another fan appreciative of UW...they were a fun team to watch here in Lubbock...Burt was playing then, but Guili was all over the court...I think she and Perkins had some nice matchups. They're going to do some damage in the NCAAs..didn't UW upset some big team a couple of years ago in the NCAAs...like UConn?
Darn...looks like FSS SW is only going to show the last 30 minute of UofA/UW..tis a shame..course as an alum of UofA, I'm pulling for the 'Cats.
I'm sure the CA press was bummed, but Guili does so many things for this team...I thought it was well deserved.

So...any BigEast semis on TV today?
I too was disgusted Saturday. Had the whole day off, kid's soccer game was early (she played great and has become much more aggressive of late, without any prodding, btw...), and we were gonna relax and take naps, and I was looking forward to finally getting to watch some women's tournry ball - especially the SEC, who i've been hoping to scout for the Dance....
Nothing.
A bunch of who-cares men's conferences getting their day in the sun, while the toughest conference in women's bball played big-time pivotal games, nowhere to be found on TV. At least I got to see TJ Ford take a page of inspiration from his friend Jamie Carey http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif, and pull out a huge win in Norman to complete a sweep of their highly-touted Big 12 division rival.
But I wanna see all of the conf. tourney games from here on out !

T.J. Ford is something....but so is Hollis Price and the Mizzou KU game today was a lot of fun. Enjoyed watching LSU beat Tenn today and am looking forward to the Pac 10 final tomorrow with Arizona and Stanford...go 'Cats.
They should have shown the Pac10 game with Arizona and Washington instead of the ACC..aren't we closer here in Texas to California that North Carolina.

You didn't miss that much ~ it wasn't much of a game. Of course, since you were pulling for UofA, I guess you would have enjoyed it. I spent the afternoon hiding from the TV. Arizona made the plays and Washington didn't. They have been hot and cold all year, and this was about as cold as it gets.
Wheeler and Polk get most of the press, but the rest of the team is excellent, too. Grzyb, Brase (Lute's grand daughter for those who may not know), and Warren all did an excellent job. I have always liked Krista Warren especially.
Liberty, which has been bubbling just under the top 25 beat High Point 84-71 on Sunday to win its seventh straight Big South Conference title. This is the team Karyn Karlin, former Lady'Back, is an assistant coach for.
