View Full Version : Post-season conference honors?

Moooooo

Obviously, I'm excited about our win in Lubbock yesterday, but with one game to go before the post-season honors are awarded, thought I'd get some opinions on who takes home the accolades. I do think the Coaches and the media will differ in their honors.

Freshman of the Year - Erin Grant, PG Texas Tech; great floor-leader, and so calm for such a young player.

Other candidates:

Chelsi Welch of OU is deserving, and with a double-digit scoring average, she could win it. Of course, her team needs her to score, more so than Grant.

Sophia Young of Baylor is deserving, but not sure the media has seen her play as often as the other freshmen mentioned above.

Newcomer of the Year - Jamie Carey, PG Texas; what else can be said. Has faced so much adversity, and enjoys playing the game more than just about anyone.

Other candidates:

Maria Villaroel of Oklahoma - not sure she even starts anymore, and the pre-season hype has taken a nose-dive (IMO).

Not really sure about others, but I'm sure there are other deserving candidates.

Player of the Year: Kendra Wecker - Kansas State; she's been solid all season, and does whatever her team needs.

Other candidates

Nichole Ohlde - Kansas State; wouldn't suprise me if she won it, but she could end up taking votes away from her teammate, and thus opening the door for another player.

Plenette Pierson - Great season after last year's disappointing suspension. Great finisher, and so quick. Tech will not know how valuable she was until they have to play without her. Yes, they faced that scenario last year, but she will be the toughest player in the conference to replace next year.

Heather Schreiber - Texas. Along with Wecker, the most versatile player in the conference. After moving from SF to PF this year, she caused more mismatches for the opponent than any other player. Like Stacey Dales, no one moves so well without the ball. She does it all for Texas.

Stacy Stephens - Texas. So strong, with such a great shooting touch. Passes the ball well, and has been great at the free-throw line. Her rebounding is unmatched, and works hard to add new facets to her game. She and Schreiber will cost each other votest, ala Wecker and Ohlde.

Coach of the Year: Jody Conradt, Texas - Has transformed an awful road team, and a bad defensive unit, into a cohesive unit. Molded a team that featured several newcomers, and only 2 seniors.

Yes, I'm biased, and I'm sure there are so many other players/coaches who other posters can justify nominating. Let's hear it!

I'm just saying two works:

JODY CONRADT

She should be named coach of the year. In a short time she turned around her program like she said she would. She gets no respect and finally her program is getting the respect it deserves.

My choice for POY is Kendra Wecker...I think she has been the warrior for KSU all season.

FOY - Erin Grant -

Coach...hmm I don't know on that one yet.

I'm not sure if it will turn out this way, but if it were up to me, this is how it'd look:

FOY: Sophia Young- She has the ability to take her team on her shoulders, which is remarkable for a freshman. Arguments can be made for Erin Grant, but I'm much more impressed with Sophia.

NOY: Jaime Carey- I don't think there will be much competition for this award.

POY: Nicole Ohlde- Nicole is always there, hitting shots, getting rebounds, and playing good defense. She is the most consistent player at KSU. Kendra Wecker might have more talent, but she can have off nights, and does so much more often than Ohlde.

Coach of the year- I have no idea. Politics seems to play more of a role in this award even more so than the player awards. I'd say whoever wins the conference tourney will have a good shot, since success seems to be about all that matters.

Just my opinion -

FOY: Sophia Young (easiest award to pick. It's not even close)

NOY: Jamie Carey (unless Maria eats her lunch Wednesday)

POY: Nicole Ohlde (unless Plenette eats her lunch Wednesday)

Coach: Why is no one considering Deb Patterson? (unless Marsha eats her lunch Wednesday). Actually, Sherri Coale has done by far the most with the talent and experience she had, but that's not how they award these things.

Jennifer

FOY: Sophia Young, easily
POY: Kendra Wecker, with all due respect to Nicole Ohlde
NOY: Jamie Carey or Villarroel

COY: Tough choice between Conradt, Patterson, and Coale depending on what exactly you judge by. I think Conradt will get it though.

A step further:
All freshman team:
Sophia Young
Chelsi Welch
Erin Grant
Nina Norman
Tamara Ransburg

All Big 12:
1st:
Kendra Wecker
Nicole Ohlde

2nd:
Megan Mahoney
Dionnah Jackson
Heather Schreiber
Tera Bjorkland

I'd disagree about Coale. People have been saying that about her ever since Hill went down, and they pulled some upsets and close ones, but reality sunk in not long after (hope I don't have to eat THAT Wed. night...) and the Sooners have been up and down & struggling - about what you'd expect fromthat combination of talent + inexperience. It's not like she hasn't got any talent. Dionnah Jackson has been a great leader by default, and they've become a grind-it-out kind of team - one that will be very tough and well-seasoned for the next 3 years as a result. Several other coaches in the Big 12 could have done just as well with the same group (Ceal Barry and Bill Fennelly come to mind).

Not a swat at Coale - she's a great coach. But I don't think the job she's done has been quite as stupendous as some have claimed.

COY ? I give it too Patterson, no question. She & Kamie engineered that program's success from the ground up, and the fruits of their labor are in full bloom this season. JC and the Horns are on a great run now, but I think Jody is just mixing the drinks, as it were. She put the team together, but they have become a self-propelled vehicle at this point and she is just enjoying watching it go. Patterson is true architect and great motivator, and she's done it all with a very slim depth chart. If she doesn't win it, there's not a drop of justice left in this ol' world.

JMHO.

POY: Kendra Wecker. Amazing year for the soph: #1 in scoring and #4 in rebounding in the Big 12.

FOY: Erin Grant. First freshman ever to lead the Big 12 is assists, ranks 11th in all of NCAA Division I. Also leads the Big 12 in assist-to-turnover ratio.

NOY: Jamie Carey. The easiest choice of all. Nobody else is even close!

COY: Sherri Coale. Considering that OU lost four starters to the WNBA and several players (I've lost count) including Caton Hill to knee injury, OU has been remarkable.

ChipperSports Organisation
2002-2003 Best And Brightest Of The Jumbo Dozen All Big 12 Team

First Team ChipperSports All Big 12
Lindsey Wilson, Iowa State
True Samurai! She carried Iowa State on her back, but was never unbowed. See ya in the WNBA, Lindsey.

Sophia Young, Baylor
The freshest frosh in the Big 12, and should be on the short list of the nation's best first years. This forward-guard-total basketball hybrid does it on all ends of the floor. Her name is all over the conference stats.

Stacy Stephens, Texas
Stand about 6'1", but plays like she's 7'1". Imposing, skilled, and physical. The top reason Texas is now a national championship threat. She could usher in a new era of Texas promenence nationally.

Nicole Ohlde, Kansas State.
Athletic and technical brilliance. A center with a guard's head, and she's got touch. She's made such a geometric improvement in a space of three years, and I think her best is yet to come.

ChipperSports Big 12 Player of the Year Kendra Wecker, Kansas State.
Further proof that a small town kid can be a big-time talent. You don't find her blend of skill and athleticism at too many places. Last year, I pegged her as America's top frosh. No Sophomore slump here. If she doesn't make the Kodak All-America team, I'll switch to FujiFilm.

Second Team
Megan Mahoney, Kansas State.
The award for best supporting actress goes to this grinder. Mahoney even more of a defensive bulldog than Wecker.

Heather Schreiber, Texas
I'm sweet on this kids ability to score, and she's really raised up the other parts of her game. Her and Stephens make for a tall, physical, precise match set of forwards.

Jia Perkins, Texas Tech
Went through some offensive slumps this year, but her defense has been a rock for TTU, and it'll pay diviends come tourney time.

Plenette Pierson, Texas Tech
Last Year? Suspended. This Year? REDEEMED!

Evan Unrau, Missouri
She does for Mizzou want Lindsey Wilson does for Iowa State. No matter how outgunned the team is, she punches the clock and goes to work and its help Missouri stay in postseason contention

Third Team
Dionnah Jackson, Oklahoma
Ms. Thomas Lott. High speed, High flair, but at time can be high risk. Another fine young Big 12 quarterback.

Erin Grant, Texas Tech
This kid will leave Lubbock with a national championship simetime in her four years. One of the best freshman playmakers I've seen in a while.

Tera Bjorklund, Colorado
Despite a bout with Britt Hartshorn syndrome, Bjorklund kept Colorado afloat and really picked up in the stretch run.

Jamie Carey, Texas
The gamble has paid off. Carey not only contributed, in the second half, she's really picked up Texas in a number of contests.

Trisha Skibbe, Oklahoma State
One of the most unsung players in the league. If she was at Oklahoma, even Robin and Vera would know her.

ChipperSports Big 12 All-Freshman Team

ChipperSports Rockin' Rugrat Freshman Player of the Year Sophia Young, Baylor
See above.

POY – Nicole Ohlde
Nicole Ohlde - #1 in Hoopla! Average, #1 on my ballot for POY.
Wecker has been brilliant but Ohlde has been the Rock. She is an efficient scorer, while also giving her team rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

FOY – Sophia Young
Without Young, Baylor would not have as many wins as it does during this rebuilding season. She adds excitement to a team that lost 2 dazzling stars in Lambert & Crockrom.

NOY – Jamie Carey
Texas fans said from the beginning that Jamie Carey would be the difference. Slowly but surely, everyone else has come on board. Perhaps the first attention getter was the Ohio State game in which Texas was getting beat badly and looked clueless against OSU’s zone defense until Jamie came in the game. Carey led a near miracle comeback though Texas lost a close one in the end.

COY: Jody Conradt, Texas
I disagree with John Henry here. Texas has made tremendous improvement from the beginning of the season. Give the coach some credit! Runner-Ups - Sherri Coale, and Deb Patterson.

Freshmen don't often make the upper level teams. Schreiber, Wecker & Koehn were all fabulous last year and were HM & 3rd team. The year Plenette Pierson was FOY, not a single freshman even made HM or 3rd team including Pierson who started every game for Tech. I included Sophia Young on my second team because I didn't know who else to put there, but Young only started 15 of Baylor's 28 games.

I agree with you, Dblt.....though our conference had a spectacular senior class last year...it typically goes to juniors and seniors.

I don't know, our sophomore class right now is a pretty stout bunch.

COY--Now why is it all about Jody, Deb and Sherri? Who was picked sixth? Colorado. Who was out of the top 50 according to wch.com? Colorado. FOY - Young
She does not get the respect because Baylor has not been on primetime like the others. What I was disappointed most, after looking at the stats, was that Erin played only twenty minutes in the lost at home to Texas. She had 5 assists and 4 turnovers when her team needed consistency. Why did she only play twenty minutes? (Hurt?)

Ive waited till Ive seen everyone play. So here are my pics.

POY Kendra Wecker, I have been more impressed with her than any other player Ive seen. I really think she didnt have a good game tonight. She has one of the quickest first steps in the conference and really plays smart.

FOY Erin Grant Sophia a young is a close second but Erin Grant has done more for Tech than Sophia has for Baylor. Sophia has better stats but Tech wouldnt be in the top ten in the nation without her.

NOY Jamie Carey I think everyone should have expected her to be player of the year.

All Big 12
Stacy Stephens (If she's not scoring, shes rebounding)
Kendra Wecker (One of the best scorers in the conference)
Plennette Pierson (Most athletic player in the big 12)
Lyndsey Wilson (What can I say, I like the way she plays)
Jia Perkins (One of the best defenders and can score too)

2nd team
Nicole Ohlde
Heather Schreiber
Sophia Young
Meghan Mahoney
Dionnah Jackson

COY Jody Conradt Her team was picked third and despite some early season losses, her team only missed and undefeated conference season by two or three points.

I know my first team looks homer with Jia and Plennette, but I believe that these two are two of the best players in the big 12. The supporting cast is not as good as Texas or K-State's.
