Texas leads 24-19 with 7:23 to go in the 1st half. I'm not sure if this stat is correct, but Gametracker indicates OU outboarding Texas 15-6.

Im surprised its not more lopsided than that. Sooners are doing an amazing job boxing out Stacy "MEAT!" Stephens. One thought so far: Lauren Shoush = nothing but hustle!

Texas up 33-31 at half.

Sooners are absolutely destroying the Longhorns on the boards, 24-10. Believe it or not, the top 5 rebounders in the game are all Sooners.

Sooners are keeping it close despite the usual ridiculous number of turnovers, this time 11 in the half.

(Quick correction, GameTracker credited another rebound to Stephens, so she is tied with Schuknecht with the 5th most rebounds in the game.)

OU can be a firey team. The 2nd half should be a great duel..it will be interesting to see what the coaches do. Looks like Stacy's getting her points..the difference in the boards is coming on the offensive end and Texas is getting to the free throw line more.

Boomer Sooners! West Texans are all Okies tonight.

Stacey Dales-Schuman just said "about" and pronounced it the American, non-Canadian way. I'm a little bit disappointed actually.

Dionnah Jackson is guarding Schreiber and occasionally Stephens. I watched mesmerized at the OU-CU game when OU had D guarding Bjorklund, and doing an absolute textbook great job of it.

The reason I picked Dionnah for my All-Conference second team is because of the many things she does for her team. As far as I can tell, she's the only player in the Big 12 that can effectively guard one through five.

Plus, she's the only player who, in conference games, has an A/TO ratio over 2.0. I think before tonight it was around 2.29.

Well, the Sooners gave Texas a good game. We aren't there yet, but are progressing nicely.

Now if we could just get those !$%!@#$~ turnovers down!

This was a great game, I'm really surprised how well OU hung all game with Texas. I thought they played well.....great job for a bunch of young'un's http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Congrats to Texas for winning the conference...or at least at this point, their piece of the pie.

From Gametracker it looks like Jackson had an impressive night..she was everywhere on the stats and Stephens clearly was not stoppable tonight.

Nice game by both team....glad to see OU hanging tough in there.

Im with swok34. Great game by both teams, amazing how OU was able to keep pace. Some random stats:

Chelsi Welch vs. Texan Teams:
PPG: 13.9
% of double digit scoring games: 75%

Chelsi Welch vs. Non-Texan Teams:
PPG: 10.9
% of double digit scoring games: 53%

The stats would be more impressive were it not for those pesky Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin keepin' her down.

Sherri made a comment that she probably should have subbed for Dionnah a bit more, she was a bit fatigued at the end.

I thought Jamie Carey looked tired and Stephens asked to come out of the game in the first half. I really thought Beky did a great job on Stephens in the first half, but foul trouble did our Beky in. I really think Beky is going to surprise a whole lot of folks after summer and spending time strengthening her upper body.

I do think Dionnah is one of the most well rounded players, and the most well-rounded 5'9 player http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif, in the conference.
She sometimes gets a few to many TO's, but that can also be contributed to youth/inexperience of the people she's on the floor with (remember another OU guard who seemed to have lots of TO's early in her career?).
She plays D, she rebounds, she can get the assists, finished the conference season with a conf-best 2.29 A/TO ratio, she plays D vs. usually the strongest offensive player on the opposing team, which at times has given her as much as a 6 or 7 inch height differential--and still does this well.
I think w/ more experience players around her (next year), she'll really begin to shine and get a little more recognition.

Of course, this conference has just a great sophomore class all the way around (Wecker, Koehn, Mahoney, Shreiber, among others), as if I need to name names.

OU has really improved. They are certainly quick from 1 through 5. I have to admire the joy and hustle with which the Sooners' play. That team could definitely be scary as early as next year.

Texas handled Villarroel for the most part and in the second half the Horns managed to slow Welch down quite a bit. They sure couldn't seem to stop Dionnah Jackson tonight. She just seemed to keep finding a way to the rim.

Texas had some struggles tonight but the team continues to show its championship mentality. When something is not working, the players just find another way. Each time OU closed the gap, Texas dug down and found something more to give. Late in the game, the Horns found one last gear to put the Sooners away.

OU played well for them, but Texas is really playing great right now. Stephens proves again that she is more than just a big body, but the real difference between Texas last year and this is Carey. Watching the game tonight, I was struck with how smoothly she runs the offense.

OU has been hampered defensively this year by having to use Jackson to defend power forwards rather than letting her pressure on the perimeter. That won't be a problem next year.

Another Texan I want to mention - some players, whether or not they are stars, you just like to watch play. One of those for me this year has been Tai Dillard.

On to Dallas!

What a great game. That was the best game I have seen played against Texas at the Erwin Center this year. It was a much closer game than the final score would indicate. The Sooners owned the boards in the first half. They played hard, they were very quick, played smart, and seemed to have arms everywhere. Every time, until the last few minutes, that Texas would make a run the Sooners had an answer. The Sooners are a much better team than I had given them credit for. Not only will they be much better next year, they are not a team that anyone should look forward to playing this year.

It was really nice to get to see Tai and Alisha experience such a great win in their last game on the home court. Of course there was the special recognition of senior night. Tai played the game that she has all year - not always doing the things that show up in the box score, just the things that help the team win. Alisha dropped a 3 as her last shot in the Erwin Center. A trophy presentation. Cutting down the net. An experience these two young women deserved, and a level of excitement that this program has missed for a number of years.

Stacy was a real warrior. Fighting cramps all night she still found a way to knock down 28 points. As a team Texas did a much better job on the boards in the second half, and Stacy was a big part of that.

And, yes, it was really nice to get to touch a championship trophy.

Go Horns!

That was another great game last night. As TRH mentioned, it was much closer than the score indicated.

I was very impressed by OU's play. They made good shots, played solid defense, & really had me nervous until the latter part of the second half, when the Horns finally broke away.

We had a larger crowd at the Erwin Center last night, & I think the noisy crowd factored in the second half. It was great to see more people there, particularly the students!

Stacy Stephens was unstoppable. 28 points! Big contributions by Schrieber, Dillard & Bowers as well. Carey's shot was off tonight--she never misses free throws, & missed 3 out of 5, but she kept her composure & ran the offense well.

Congrats to the Horns on their first Big 12 Championship!
