View Full Version : Just an observation...

My observation regarding how Tech feels about who wins the KSU-CU game...

They don't care who wins. Regardless of the outcome of that game, if Tech loses to Texas they can't win the Big 12 title. If Tech gets past Texas, if they lose to KSU regardless of the outcome of the KSU-CU game, they don't win the conference championship.

Now if Tech loses to Texas and KSU beats Colorado, there is an interesting scenario that sets up. If Texas beats OU, a Tech loss to KSU means that KSU is a conference co-champion with Texas, and gets the #1 conference seed. If Texas loses to OU, Tech can play their hearts out against KSU, and if they win, KSU still gets the #1 conference seed with a co-championship with Texas.

Just in case any Longhorn fans thought that Tech was powerless in this issue, I want to set the issue straight. Tech holds the power to determine conference standings, win or lose against either Texas or KSU, or both.

At this point in time the only thing we know for sure is that there is only one team that controls their own destiny. That is K-State..win out and they will be at least co-champions and a #1 seed. Lose either one or both of the next 2 games and they have to depend on someone else to do their work for them. Plus the whole plot thickens. I'd just prefer to keep things simple and continue to win. A lot of pressure on some very young but experienced players. We'll have half the answers by noon on Sunday http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

That's been my point on the other thread ever since someone posted that the conference tourney seedings were basically already set at this point. This thing could end up any number of ways.

Let's say the Kats lose to the Buffs. Tech beats Texas and the Kats. Texas beats OU. Wouldn't Tech and Texas be Co-Champs? Texas would get the #1 and Tech the #2 in the Tournament?

Moot point. The Kats just beat the Buffs in a game that really went down to the final minute.

I think tomorrow's game just got all the bigger......

If Texas Tech wins vs Texas, I think Thursday nite's game is pretty moot. With a win they get the #3 seed in the tourney; and will also share in the championship pie....with a loss, they still get the #3 seed and no share of the championship pie....
ok, that's a pretty large incentive to be a co-champion.

That is, of course, assuming that Texas beats OU Wednesday nite...

If Texas wins tomorrow......then Thursday's game is huge for Kansas State to win in order to win/tie the conference and obtain the #1 seed.

I don't think either team really cares about seeding. This game is about the rivalry and bragging rights. After the dust settles there might be some talk, but until the final horn sounds...this one has nothing to do with the tourney.

I rather expect that the rivalry is very important but so is the final record and the championship. Trust me, all three teams care a great deal about that.

I agree......how could a team NOT want to be in place for a Big XII Championship. It's the prize we play these 16 games for every year http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

While it is hard to imagine the Texas/Texas Tech game being any bigger than it is, each and every year, this year's game may have just gotten bigger.

The Longhorns may not care about Big 12 tourny seeding but they do care about winning the Big 12 season champsionship for the first time in the history of the conference. By winning out, the Longhorns are guaranteed at least a share of that championship and a new banner to hang in the Erwin center. Texas has many Southwest Conference championship banners. The Big 12 banner is conspicuous in its absence.
