Final: Texas 79, Baylor 57
Way to go Horns!!
Not even a shadow of a chance for Baylor to make the NCAA's now, unless they win the conference tournament.
They are my best argument against scheduling nothing but cupcakes in your non-conference schedule.

Good job 'Horns!!! Convincing road win over a team who plays exceptionally well at home.
I'm so proud of my Horns! And I'm especially impressed with the 9-13 3-point shooting and the 23 assists to 13 turnovers. The Horns are playing lights out right now and they will need to continue this play to win in Lubbock on Sunday. Now that will be one tough game - and it's anybody's guess as to who will come out victorious.
Baylor's big guns - Young and Blackmon played very well tonight and they held Stacy to 8 points but they just didn't get enough help from their guards. I was really really nervous about this game and am so relieved that it is finally over.

It won't be a tough game if Tech plays like it did tonight.

YCN, whilst I'm not a huge fan of our non-conference schedule either, I don't see how a tougher one would have given us any better shot at the tournament. BU is now 17-9. Assuming they win their last two (a big if, but they should be favored in each,)they will be 19-9, with a shot at reaching 20 wins in the Big 12 tourney. Their RPI is in the 60's. They probably still won't get in due to a lack of quality wins, but could still claim 20 wins and 8-8 in a tough conference. If they play 2-3 fairly tough non-conference games, knowing how young we were early, we probably end up 9-3 in non-con, and 17-11 overall. At 17-11, we probably have an equal or worse shot at getting in. This is all subjective I know, but I think, this year with this team, that the easier schedule did no harm.
Now to tonight. Baylor played better than in the first game in Austin, but Texas proved to me tonight that they are the best team in the conference. Every player played well, but I thought the backcourt combo of Dillard, Norman, and Carey were the key. Texas ruled the transition game and created easy chance after easy chance. And knocked them all down. Shhoting 9-13 from 3-land will get you a win darn near every time. Schreiber continues to be a bear-killer.
For Baylor, Steffanie Blackmon played hard and well, and did a good job on Stacy. Sophia did as well, but we don't have the guards to hang. This is one pairing where Baylor just doesn't matchup well at all.
Congrats Horns. Keep playing like this and you'll be spending a weekend in Atlanta.

Spooky, you are right. The guard play is really suffering. Baylor's passing was very poor tonight. I can't say enough good things about the Lady Horns. They really played well. I am anxious to see them play again in the tournament. It looks like NIT time for the Lady Bears.
Carolann, it was good to meet you tonight. Maybe the next time we meet the outcome of the game won't be the same.

I agree.......and OU is the best example of what a tough schedule can give you....you don't even have to win the danged things http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Spooky, if you have just a winning record with an RPI in the 30's, and a .500 record in a tough conference, you probably get an NCAA tournament invite. Baylor played 3 road games in non-conference against 65 Montana State - you lost, 274 SE Louisiana - you won, and 81 UCLA - you won there as well. Baylor played one neutral court game vs. 174 San Jose State.
Your non-conference home games were against teams ranked 254, 156, 308, 302, 151, 295, 281 and 160 in the RPI. Give me a break. That isn't a schedule, that is a statement that you cannot compete. Baylor is proving that right now. While that 11-1 non-conference record looks mighty fine, everyone knows it was built against a big collection of nobody. That is why Baylor isn't going to the dance.
Your team has proven that it can beat top 100 teams. It's nobody's fault but your own that your AD or whoever was afraid to schedule more than 2 of them before conference play. That, and that almost alone, is why your team is destined to play in the NIT this year.
KMR's post-game comment on the news last night:
"I told Jody after the game that was the best game I've ever seen a Texas team play. And I've been playing against them since the early 80's."

If Texas continues to play throughout the tournament and post season the way they played last night, they will go very far. I had originally picked Tech to win the game against the Horns this coming weekend, but I am having doubts about that game. Texas was very strong and composed last night. I would have to agree with KMR's assessment of the Texas team. I wish K State and Texas would play one more conference game before the tournament. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

First, I enjoyed by trip to Baylor. It always makes the trip nicer when you win. I now know that Zo is a dog. I enjoyed meeting Zo's human companion. I had conversations with other Baylor fans at well.
I was surprised at how easily the Horns won last night. The Bears came out strong, getting easy buckets from Young and Blackmon. Offensively, the Horns could not establish Stacy inside. The Horns adjusted quickly on both defense and offense. They are communicating excellently on defense. On offense, they have become a very hard team to defend. Most of the players pass well. We have every type of shooter/scorer. We have 3 point shooters, penetrators, and jump shooters.
The game was oddly officiated to say the least. The officials evidently decided not to call anything inside at all.
The Big 12 is slowly learning that you can't defend the Horns by just packing it in inside anymore. Maybe we can keep the secret within the conference, giving the Horns an element of surprise in the NCAA tournament.

P.S. to Austin Horn Fans - I'm a big fan of the bus trips, particularly for games on weeknights. Our bus driver knew what was up. We had a safe, relaxing ride. $30.00 per person with a box lunch from Jason's deli. There were between 30 and 35 people on the bus but there was room for a few more. Last night we watched a couple of videos of the 1986 team. They were a hoot.
