View Full Version : Now that non-conference games are over

What's everyone's (pointless) predictions as to how the conference race will end up?
Here's mine, though I haven't seen any of the bottom tier teams play.

1. Texas Tech--tough between 1&2, but KSU goes to Tech and Baylor and overall Tech seems to have a more favorable schedule (but by no means easier). That, and Tech's depth.
2. Kansas State--see 1.
3. Colorado
4. Texas--has potential to be higher, but until they prove they are a decent road team...
5. OU-could finish higher, but could very easily finish lower
6. Baylor
T7. Iowa State
T7. Missouri
9. Kansas
10. Nebraska
11. Texas A&M
12. Oklahoma State-maybe w/ vs Arkansas will lead to a turnaround

1. Kansas State and Texas Tech, but Tech gets the #1 seed in the tourney by virture of a head-to-head win.
3. Colorado, only a game back.
4. A gap to Texas, finishing just ahead of...
5. Oklahoma
6. Iowa State and Baylor tie, although I'm having trouble evaluating Baylor due to the lack of quality opponents in their non-conference schedule.
8. Connie Yori won't let Nebraska players feel sorry for themselves, but the short roster runs out of gas as the season progresses.
9. A new and better attitude prevails at Kansas this year, but they don't have the horses to compete for the upper half.
10. Something doesn't seem right at Missouri, and I think that their funk continues this year.
11. Oklahoma State makes a bit of progress under new coach Julie Goodenough, but it hardly makes a difference in the standings, as the many thousands of empty seats at Gallagher-Iba suck some of the motivation out of this team.
12. Texas A&M seems mired in the pit, and I think they will anchor the bottom of the conference from start to finish.

I go with YCN's analysis.

Nebraska is showing some fire, Mizzou isn't.

Texas is mystifying. The women's team and men's team have the same personality. They seem talented but somehow undisciplined. More than any other team in the conference, they win games they shouldn't win, and lose games they shouldn't lose.

1. KSU - Wow!
2. TTU - Wow
3. CU - Look out above
4. OK - I think so
5. UT - Can you still be in 5th at 8-8?
6. BU - We will know soon enough
7. NU - Even after today, I'm still impressed
8. ISU - Some heartbreakers here
9. KU
10. OSU
11. MU
12. TAMU

Kansas State and Texas Tech look to fight it out for the top position and the last game of the season might be the one to decide it all.
3)Texas-The talent and potential are there, but can Condrat round them up and win on the road?
4)Oklahoma-Maybe not as talented as the top 3 this season due to injuries, but Coale is a fighter and will get her group together.
5)Colorado-Non conference record looks good.
6)Iowa State-Shooting will come around for SOME wins
6)Baylor-Haven't shown me anything yet, but I know this squad is willing to prove a lot of people wrong.
8)Kansas-on the rise up?
9)Oklahoma State-9th place ain't bad considering the start to their season. We know they have a team good enough to win some games, but can they do it consistently?
9)Nebraska-Have shown signs of potential but a loss against 0-13?? Unacceptable.
11)Missouri-What happened to them? Sweet 16 a few years ago and now they've had some tough losses.
12)Texas A&M-It's not Gillom's fault...when you get no respect from your own Athletic Department, how do you expect to finish higher?

Let the games begin!

1) Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders are on a roll and are always one of the most consistent teams in conference play. The fact that they get K-State in Lubbock in the last game gives them an edge over the Wildcats.
2) Kansas State. Surely they can't repeat the Iowa performance again, can they? Someone said it best in another post - "scary good" today. I love to watch this team play.
3) Colorado. The Buffs are quietly putting things together in Boulder. I think they will do some damage this year and give Tech and K-State a run for the title.
4) Baylor. KMR is a competitor and I think the Bears will want to show all of the critics who have taken issue with the non-conference schedule that they are for real.
5) Texas. I hope to goodness I'm low on this pick. But until we show some consistency and ability to win on the road, I can't go any higher. The toughness and competitiveness are there, the execution has left something to be desired. C'mon ladies, let's put it together!!
6) Oklahoma. I was not impressed with the showing at Stanford on Friday. The Sooners seem to have had a bit of post-injury letdown lately. I'm sure Sherri will have them rolling by about the time the Longhorns come to Norman.
7) Missouri. I'm not as down on the Tigers as some others are. Unrau and Barr are solid players. I think they'll hold their own against the bottom half, but I don't see them beating the top 3-4 teams. I guess we'll see in Waco on Wednesday.
8) Iowa State. They're a mystery. I've got to think they will start putting it together at some point. Probably when Texas comes to town.
9) Kansas. Will be a lot more competitive this year.
10) Texas A&M
11) Nebraska. The lack of bodies will hurt them.
12) Oklahoma State. Will the Arkansas win inspire them, or was it an abberation?

ok, I'm stabbing in the dark, I don't think I've seen Colorado play at all this season, ditto Baylor.

1) Texas Tech - I'm with the majority here, I think TT gets the home court advantage with a win over KSU. KSU and TT could very well tie for 1st place in the Big XII.
1) Kansas State -- ok, I'll say it will be a tie within the conference, though KSU will get the #2 seed in the tourney.
3) Texas - I really think Texas plays so, so much better once the Big XII play gets rolling good. I've never see a healthy Texas team not end up in the upper echeleon.
4) Colorado - by virtue of their record, and I haven't seen them play, but they seem a whole lot more consistent than OU is right now.
5) OU -- OU might fight up for the 3,4 spot...but that all depends if they find a leader for this team...and Caton cannot do it from the bench. Their youth might step up and bite them and land them down a few more notches.
6) Baylor - just can't see KMR's team falling to the bottom six;
and I think they have a more-rounded team this year.
7)Iowa State - ISU is another team that could contest for the top six.
8) Nebraska - might have them a tad bit high, though I think the team they've got have the heart to win more than a few.
9) Kansas - Is this Marion's last year if she doesn't compete well in the Big XII? If that's true, they could well land up a couple of spots. They've had a much better preconf. than in the past 2 years.
10)TAMU - I think Gillom and Co showed a bit of their spark last year.....and I don't think the Big XII is as tough a league as it was last year.
11)Missouri - haven't seen them on TV this year either, but their preconf hasn't gone as well as years' past.
12)Oklahoma State - how did this team EVER beat a Top 10 team is beyond me, given how badly they've been beaten in some contest?
Stillwater, still is a difficult place to play.

My final four team picks: Texas Tech, Duke, LSU, and to pull a Stacey.........Tennessee, Connecticut, Kansas State, Purdue.

Shocking I'm sure.

1: Colorado: All it should take is a split with K-State, an upset of TTech at home, and no let downs...the latter unlikely w/ Ceal at the helm.. Don't think OU can win here. Expect a loss at Texas, but that's not a certainty. Ceal needs to make a decision though on her point guard already. The depth there is nice, but chemistry is needed. I'm still in favor of VJR btw.

2: Texas Tech: I reckon they'll win the B12 tourney.

3: K-State: The loss to Stanford makes me wonder how they'll hold-up against other solid defensive teams.

4: Texas: Carey showed yesterday how good she can make this team. i think the top four are completely interchangable. Who wants it the most?

5: Oklahoma: It's impressive they've help up as well as they have against adversity. But I can't see them any higher than this.

6: Iowa State: Anyone remember their pre-season rankings? It's gonna be tough for us to get six teams in this season

7: Nebraska: I've no idea what Yori is doing there..but it sure is working.

8: Baylor:

9: Missouri

10: Kansas

11: OSU

12: Texas A&M

Let me get my excuses out of the way first. I really do live in Yemen so I haven't seen any games first hand (1st Baylor exhibition game only). With that out of the way, standings once conference play is over should look something like....

NCAA Tournament Teams
1. Baylor - What can I say...I'm a Baylor grad and fan. Figure I'll go with my heart on this one.
2. Kansas State - seem to be a team on a mission. KSU backers are turning out in big numbers to support their team. Must stay away from serious injuries. Excitement is there and should continue for years to come.
3. Texas Tech - always tough. Have the poise and experience to go deep into NCAA tournament. Coach Sharpe has done an excellent job up in Lubbock.
4. Texas - perplexing team. I think conference play will bring out the team that played Tennessee and Lady Horns will make a statement.
5. Colorado - don't know much about the Lady Buffs. Seem to be building on last year's Sweet 16 experience.
6. Oklahoma - non-conference schedule should make Lady Sooners battle tested and ready to take on anyone in Big XII play. However, injuries will hurt.

NIT Invites
7. Iowa State - so much tradition. I love what they've done to help establish Big XII competitive nature. Plus fans back the team in a major way. Could still come together but just doesn't seem right this year.
8. Nebraska - going on a hunch here. Had some good wins. Will be a force in determining conference standings.

No Tourney This Year
9. Kansas - will take another year for this young team to really come together.
10. Oklahoma State - looks like season will be up and down. Coach needs another year or two to get Cowgirls playing consistently.
11. Missouri - show me
12. Texas A&M - basketball isn't king in College Station.

1. Kansas State - What can I say but WOW!
2. Texas Tech - Very, very close second.
3. Colorado - Depends on point guard play and everyone staying healthy.
4. Texas - Brutal non-conference schedule will help the young 'horns. Having watched Jamie Carey play in high school, believe me, she is a winner!
5. Oklahoma - Losing Caton was tough. Very impressed with Maria and Dionnah.
6. Iowa State - Tough to replace Angie and Tracy. If those shots start falling.....LOOK OUT! (Wait until after 1/8 for them to start falling....OK????)
7. Baylor - Tough to judge based on non-conference schedule. KMR is a winner though!
8. Missouri - Barr and Unrau are solid. Need others to step up.
9. Kansas - Will pull an upset or two. Need to shoot a lot better though.
10. Texas A&M - Who knows??????????????????
11. Nebraska - Depth will be an issue. Having Yori as the coach is good for a few conference wins though.
12. Oklahoma State - Depends on which OK State team shows up;the one that played Arkansas or the one that played Michigan State.

Stanford, like Tennessee, has a chance to be at home until the final four. I think this alone is reason to add them to the list.
The other regional hosts are U of New Mexico and U. of Dayton, Ohio.
So, my long shot way early Final Four is: TN, Stanford, Duke, Texas Tech.

good point, I'm adding them to my list, too.

I thought last year was the last time that a team could play both their 1st and 2nd rounds AND their regional games on their home court...because I recall having a conversation that ISU was lucky to have gotten their's in during the 2002 season.....??anyone know??

I do remember the discussion as well.

Someone on the wbb list brought up the point that w/ 3 losses, and a tough SEC ahead, TN very well might not be the #1 seed in their own region. So, someone else will have the unfortunate honor of going to play at TN to get to the Final Four. Of course, Pat Summitt was upset about this happening to her team last year, but I'm sure this year it'll be ok. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Who might that team be? Potential #1's Duke, LSU, and Uconn will have already played TN. That might leave someone (TT or KSU) from the Big 12 going there, if either of them secure a #1 seed.

New Mexico is the host school for the 1st-4th rounds this year as well, not that anyone really thinks they have a shot at the Final Four.

Is a school guaranteed to play in their own regional this year?

hmmmmm, I don't even know where we would find the info....
I'll go ask the ESPN board.

Next year, OU is hosting a regional, but if I'm not mistaken, OU cannot host the 1st and 2nd rounds next year.

Just for fun, I put everybody's picks for how the conference race would turn out in tabular format, and summarized all the picks from 1-12 in a separate table.

From the picks, it is pretty easy to see that the consensus says that Texas Tech and Kansas State are in a two-team race for the conference championship this year, although Colorado, Texas and Baylor all received first place votes, and CU and Texas also received second place votes.

It looks to be a two-team horse race for third in the conference between CU and Texas, while OU, Baylor and Iowa State look to battle for the fifth place spot.

Trailing those teams there isn't much consensus as to the 8-12 spots, although no one picked Missouri dead last, and no one picked Kansas, Oklahoma State or Texas A&M for seventh.

The consensus puts the rankings as follows:

1. Texas Tech
2. Kansas State
3. Colorado
4. Texas
5. Oklahoma
6. Baylor
7. Iowa State
8. Missouri
9. Nebraska
10. Kansas
11. Texas A&M
12. Oklahoma State

It appears that the teams that people are least sure about are Texas, possibly due to their road woes; Baylor, likely due to their good record against an easy non-conference schedule; and Nebraska, with a very good win, and a shockingly bad loss.

On the other hand, Oklahoma ONLY received votes for fourth, fifth and sixth; and they along with Texas Tech and Kansas State - who only received 1-3 votes - have by far the greatest consensus of opinion.

Excellent work, YCN. Thank you.

two cents

Pretty nice summary, YCN. I'm a little late on this, but I've been busy. As usual at this point in the season, I'm confused about how all the teams stack up. Plus teams have only played a little over 40% of their schedule, so a lot of polishing remains to be done. Doing this projection is good, because it reminds me of how tough this conference is even when it's "down" a little. This is a young conference right now. Only 14 seniors in the 12 starting lineups. Chipper's remark a few weeks ago that the conference is rebuilding rather down is worth noting. Here are my thoughts anyway:

1---Texas Tech---Plenty of talent aboard. If they continue to develop each facet of the game, they won't have any weaknesses by tournament time. Biggest weakness so far has been their inability to maintain focus for more than about 20 minutes per game. It has been enough to win, but that won't last forever. The Lady Raiders have demonstrated extended stretches of both: A) remarkably exceptional play and B)merely adequate play. It's time to start steadily increasing the ratio of A to B.

2---Kansas State---Showed a lot poise as a team of freshmen plus Ohlde and Rethman until ODU knocked them around a bit. As sophs +1, they seem even more confident. Can be more than a little scary when they hit 2/3 of their 3-pointers (especially when tossing up 23 attempts). Not sure they can be beaten when they're "on" like that. Their range (especially Koehn's) extends the defense creating a lot space for cutting and passing. Must score to hang with this team. Wildcats are steady. If the opponent has a scoring lull, KSU roars ahead.

3---Texas---They have some doubters (and I might even pick against them for Sat's game), but the team has too much talent for me to rank them lower. The struggle to put all the pieces in place reminds me of Tech last year. Could take the Longhorns awhile to show their full might, but there is a lot of season left. Already have looked outstanding at home and have steadily improved their road play (should be fierce by the time they arrive in Lubbock).

4---Colorado---Buffaloes lost a lot talent from last year, but had some in reserve. If the veterans can stay healthy, if they can solidify play at the point, and if Metoyer continues to improve, this team will be a force by season's end. Likely to be more consistent late rather than early in league play. (yeah, I wrote this after the ISU game, so I cheated a little)

5---Oklahoma---Sherri Coale had expectations of a nice follow-up to last season. They certainly weren't going to back down from anybody. Still don't think they will. But Coale's objective now is to get them as prepared as possible by March to see what they can accomplish as hosts. Part of the task will be to build confidence. The young 'uns will be hardened by fire and may return with an iron will to win next year. Woe to any team that doesn't think the Sooners will compete.

6---Baylor---Granted, they've beaten mostly bad teams, but they knocked the tar out of those teams just like the last two years. Plus the Bears did overcome a double digit deficit to beat UCLA by 12 on the road. UCLA is 4-0 in the PAC 10. Could definitely finish higher, especially if any of the above slip. Another young team (only Stasha Richards is a senior) which will have its ups and downs. I haven't seen them play, but I think this is a well-balanced team. The coaches probably know the team's weaknesses, but the players may not yet. They will learn, as the coaches in this league are stern taskmasters.

7---Iowa State---Listened to a little bit of the Washington game. During the part I heard, the Cyclones were either tied or ahead, but ended losing in a rough finish. This seemed like a quality road loss and I thought they were getting it together. Then they struggled to beat Detroit Mercy and lost to Marquette at home. So I just don't know. Again they lead against Colorado and end up taking a tough loss. This can get in a team's head. I still think the Cyclones have a lot of potential and could finish much higher than 7th, but it depends on how quickly they can get over the hump.

8---Missouri---Before the season began, I looked at the Tigers as a contender for the upper division. They have been disappointing so far, but they remind me of OSU last year, and I remember how tough the Cowgirls were late in the season. JUCO transfers (James and Perkins) sometimes take time to grasp the concepts that create coordinated team play. I would not be stunned if Missouri finished as high as 5th. There could be a real dogfight for that spot, because each of the teams I have picked 5th through 8th are likely to be much better late in the season. I would actually expect some of these teams to tie.

9---Texas A&M---Here I diverge from the consensus. Thought the Aggies might be a surprise team this year. Last year, they beat ISU and UT at home, gave KSU fits, and played good 1st halves against OU and TTU while winning 5 conference games. They have suffered the same kind of misfortune as OU in losing key players. I'm going to stick with them anyway. A number of teams in the conference might struggle with A&M's ability to force turnovers (Tech's season high: 21). Just don't know where they're going to get their rebounding from with Moore gone. Their remaining rebounding leader (Janae Derrick) only averages 5.8 per game.

10--Nebraska---Three seniors in the starting lineup makes this the most veteran team in the conference. Cornhuskers need to sneak in as many wins as they can quickly. I am afraid the starters will be worn down by Big 12 play as the season progresses. Schedule is not particularly favorable for a quick start, but they might pick up a few wins toward the middle of the conference schedule. I like the attitude that Yori has brought to this team. Better times are ahead. Those seniors just might have the mentality to move things along a little quicker though.

11--Kansas---I know they recruited a lot of talent, but the Jayhawks are young. It is rare for new players to exhibit the court savvy displayed by their Kansas State counterparts. Can they put together a really solid game here and there? Probably. Can they do it twice a week? Not likely.

12--Oklahoma State---Before that fortuitous flight delay in Michigan, I would have been most confident about this pick. Now, I'm as confused about who to put here as every other spot in this piece of guesswork. Don't think they will go winless, but even after the Arkansas game, I think they have a lot to figure out.

Excellent post, two cents. I've added your prediction to my tables, which has dropped OSU into 12th place in the consensus, by a fraction of 1/10 of a place.

The conference play has started predictably, but I'll predict that it will be anything but by February or well before.
