UConn Still Unbeaten, Tops Poll
By CHUCK SCHOFFNER
AP Sports Writer
Connecticut emerged from an upset-filled week as the nation's only unbeaten major-college team and was a unanimous No. 1
choice Monday in The AP women's basketball poll.
UConn (16-0) received all 44 first-place votes from a national media panel after a convincing 86-72 victory at Tennessee, which
lost for the first time but held on at No. 2. Oklahoma remained third.
The Huskies were the first unanimous No. 1 in the poll since Notre Dame the week of Jan. 29 last season.
Four members of last week's Top Ten - Iowa State, Baylor, Georgia and Purdue - lost to unranked opponents, causing a major
reshuffling after the first three spots. Only Iowa State stayed in the Top Ten.
Kansas State dealt the losses to Iowa State and Baylor and joined the rankings at No. 14 - the highest debut during the season since the poll was expanded from 20 to 25 teams in 1989. Boston College also joined for the first time this season, moving in at No. 24.
Louisiana State and Cincinnati dropped out. Cincinnati lasted just one week after earning its first-ever national ranking.
Six teams were unbeaten at the start of last week, but only Connecticut stayed that way. In addition to Tennessee, the others to lose for the first time were Iowa State, Baylor, Georgia and Cincinnati.
Connecticut had 1,100 points in the voting and Tennessee 1,039 - 13 more than Oklahoma (12-1), which has lost only to Connecticut.
Stanford moved up one spot to fourth and Wisconsin jumped seven places to fifth, its highest ranking ever. The Badgers (13-1), who have won 12 straight, twice were as high as eighth, most recently on Dec. 23, 1997.
Iowa State rebounded from its loss to beat Nebraska 88-54 and slipped two spots to sixth. Duke jumped four places to seventh and was followed by Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Texas Tech.
Vanderbilt, which went 2-1 during the week with a loss to South Carolina, dropped two places. South Carolina climbed five places, and Texas Tech went from ninth to 10th after losing to Oklahoma.
Louisiana Tech moved up two spots to 11th, Baylor dropped from seventh to 12th and Purdue went from 10th to 13th after losing at Iowa. Kansas State was 14th, and a loss to Michigan State sent Georgia from eighth to 15th.
Texas jumped from 21st to 16th and was followed by North Carolina, Florida, Auburn and Tulane.
Colorado, Michigan, Colorado State, Boston College and Old Dominion held the final five places. Colorado dropped five spots after losing to Oklahoma and Texas.
Kansas State (14-1) was last ranked in the final poll of the 1983-84 season. The Wildcats, whose starters include three freshmen and a sophomore, are the seventh Big 12 school in the Top 25.
``I think the quality of this league puts us in the position we're in right now,'' Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. ``You earn a couple of significant victories against great basketball teams and you have an opportunity to find yourself in the Top 25.
``For our program, that's a very special achievement and a very special place to be.''
Boston College (11-2) has an eight-game winning streak since a 75-66 loss to Tennessee. The Eagles' last appearance in the poll was Nov. 27, 2000, when they were 25th.
LSU (7-5), 23rd last week, lost to Georgia in its only game. The Lady Tigers had been ranked every week since Feb. 2, 1999.
Cincinnati (11-1), 25th last week, dropped out after a 71-65 loss to Louisville.
Way to go KSU!
I've seen Wisconsin on TV (most of their home games are tape-delayed on PBS up here) and have not been very impressed. I think #6 is about right for ISU, but I don't think Wisconsin is better.

And Wisconsin's lone loss came to---Texas, way back early in the season. I haven't seen them play, so can't say one way or not where I think they should be.
I think it's about par for the course that TN is still #2 in the AP. I mean, who (besides us) remembers OU playing Uconn tougher than anyone a whole week ago?
I think Wisconsin's jump was way too high! I guess, however, that makes my 'Horns look good seeing that we beat them. Way to go KSU! I am really impressed with the results they've had this year!

From the ap.org front page, I click on "The Wire", the 2nd black box from the left. Then I click on "The Wire" again at the top of the next page. From there, you have a menu at the top of the page with topics, and I click on "Sports". Sometimes it'll be on the sports page, or you may have to scroll down and choose "Women's College Basketball".

Tech plays Wisconsin in February so I guess we will see where they are compared to the Big 12 once again. I truly hope they are overranked. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

I didn't know that. I'll definitely be pulling for Tech there! Is that @TTu or @Wisc?

One/third of the top 21 teams are in the Big 12. Should make some around the country sit up and take notice!
By the way, the Wisconsin game is at Tech for one of those Sunday afternoon TV games.
Based on watching some of Wisconsin's games on TV I agree with mred that they are probably not better than ISU. I'm also pretty sure Tech will beat them. BUT, right now, I think their record entitles them to the higher ranking. Not only is their RPI the second highest in the country, they also have good wins against Florida, NC State, Drake, Purdue, Michigan, and Iowa -- a very impressive list! Their only loss is by 5 points to a ranked team on a neutral court. They've probably played and beaten more good teams than anyone else so far this season (except maybe Tennessee). The future is the future, but right now I think their AP ranking is well deserved.

It's in Lubbock, part of the Big 12/Big 10 Challenge
I'm not sure who plays the other game? Anyone know?

OU played the other game vs Illinois.......think there was a scheduling problem so OU played in December and Texas Tech in February........not so sure how valid Wisconsin is away from home. At home they are really tough, and if they follow last year's pattern, they start a season better than they finish.

I have seen Wisconsin kill Purdue and witnessed in person them putting it to Iowa. And no they are not better than Iowa State. What they have is size (lot of size and I don't mean height) and great senior leadership. They are playing really well as a team right now. Their team chemistry is tight. Stephanie Rich Iowa's Miss Basketball last season has been contibuting off the bench for them after starting some earlier in the season. They might not be better than some of the Big 12 teams but I wouldn't want to meet up with them.
