Anyone watching the Women's College World Series? The officials are calling a lot of illegal pitches. They called 6 or 7 against Florida and they've called a lot against Arizona. Was this called a lot in the Big XII this year?

During the afternoon games, the commentators mentioned that for the past few years the powers that be in Softball wanted to do something to increase the amount of offense in softball. There had been too many 1 - 0 games. So they moved the pitchers mound back a little bit and allowed the composite bats. The emphasis on illegal pitches is a part of that effort. The problem seems to be that they didn't really notify the teams that it would be an emphasis in the tournaments until March. Which leaves no time for pitchers to adjust their footwork. They commented that one of these pitchers had more illegal pitches called today than she had all year long.

It's just been insane and I'm not sure how they're calling it. If they had really been calling it if both feet are in the air, then they could have called it even more than they did. This sudden emphasis certainly impacted 2 games today and both teams it was called against (Arizona and Florida) wound up losing by a lot. Surely that wasn't what was meant by emphasis! It'll be interesting to see how the next game is called.

No they have NOT called it consistently all year. If it's illegal they should have been calling it in March all the way thru the super regionals, not waiting until the WCWS.
