So does the eligibility list for NotY include all newcomers, including freshmen, or does it just consist of transfers, juco and otherwise?

The latter, I believe, even though the title doesn't imply it.

There is a freshman of the year award

There is a freshman of the year award
Right, but I didn't know if you could get both, the way that Griner could (but rightfully won't) win both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year.

Glad Anna made the list, but my ISU freshman of the year is Chelsea Poppens.

I'm disappointed that Monique Smalls didn't get mentioned - but we have a lot of very good freshman this year.

Glad Anna made the list, but my ISU freshman of the year is Chelsea Poppens.

I have to say that I was a little surprised by this. I was way impressed with Poppens although Prins isn't bad either. ;)

Glad to see Ashley on there, wish Chambers would have gotten a nod.

Congratulations to all. Glad Bianca got some recognition. If Spears played on a better team, she would get more recognition as would Jeffrey.

Glad Anna made the list, but my ISU freshman of the year is Chelsea Poppens.

That's also my opinion and the consensus at Cyclone Fanatic. I thought both had a shot (both had good seasons) but Pop was a little more consistent and had a little better season overall.

I think we'll keep 'em both. :)

12 of the 15 first- and second-team players are seniors. Last year it was only eight of 15.

Including the honorable mention and defense team, only three underclassmen (Griner, Fontenette, Carter) made the list(s).

Completely different league next year...

She doesn't score enough to make the all freshman team I suspected. But she should be on the All Defense team. Between her steals, defensive pressure and rebounds in the later games, she proved to be one of the best defensive guards in the conference.

[That Poppens was the best ISU freshman was] also my opinion and the consensus at Cyclone Fanatic. I thought both had a shot (both had good seasons) but Pop was a little more consistent and had a little better season overall.
You can read between the lines in Fennelly's comment (http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=204904221&DB_OEM_ID=10700) on Prins' pick:

“I think Anna is someone that came in with a lot of expectations and has had signs of doing some really positive things,” Fennelly said. “I think the coaches see her potential and the ability that she has to be a very good player in this league and I’m happy for Anna. I’m very disappointed that Chelsea Poppens didn’t gain that attention because she deserved it as well. I’m happy for Anna but at the same time disappointed that Chelsea didn’t receive the same kind of attention that she deserved.”

When I saw the list my first thought was where is Poppens. She is having a great year and has played more than Prins. Both are great and I have to agree that Chambers should be on the list too.

Congrats to all!

Perhaps Ms. Poppens will be anxious to show the voters the error of their ways over the next few weeks! :)

Yeah, I know but I think she deserved something - honorable mention at the very least. I would find it hard to remove any of the other players on the all freshman team....but

From the L-AJ
http://blogs.lubbockonline.com/just_aj_sports/2010/03/08/smalls-snubbed-from-big-12-all-freshman-team/
“Not to take away from anybody that was, but I was definitely surprised,” coach Kristy Curry said of Smalls’ absence. “I felt like she deserved that honor, but we can’t vote for our own. If I could have I definitely would have.

“I think a lot of times when coaches go and vote they look at points scored. I think you have to measure her value, her worth, in so many more little things. How important it is for us to have the ball in her hands, her assist-to-turnover ratio. I definitely know that all Mo really cares about is her team winning, and that’s probably another reason why I’d give her my vote.”

Poppens came on really strongly towards the end of the season while Prins was impressive at the beginning. This may have influenced the voting since those coaches who played ISU early and who remembered what Prins did may not have been paying close attention to the more recent games. That's my guess, anyway, since frankly it's a no-brainer that over the past six games or so Poppens has been the standout freshman for Iowa State. And at least she did get the last "Freshman of the Week" award of the season.

I think he's using the "freshman and sophomores" definition for underclassmen.

Mred is correct ... underclassmen are Frosh & Sophs. Daninelle being a Junior is not an underclassman.

I think Ashley Roberson is certainly desirving of being named among the best 15 - but then she's from Tech and the invisibility factor figures in....

There appear to be two different definitions of "underclassmen" based on searching on internet, one being "freshman or sophomore" and the other being "an undergraduate who is not yet a senior" so I guess both are correct.

If Trammel actually cared in the least about women's basketball, I might have a different opinion about his article. But he doesn't, and I don't.
