And to whom did they lose?
I was pondering whether Nebraska will become only the second team to make it through the Big 12 regular season schedule at 16-0, or whether they'll wind up 15-1.
And I started wondering who the "and one" was of the fifteen and one teams.
1998 15-1 Lady Raiders lost at Iowa State, not surprising considering their record in Ames.
2001 15-1 Sooners lost to Iowa State. (Thnx, 35TangoTango.)
2003 15-1 Longhorns I'm pretty sure lost at Kansas State
2009 15-1 Sooners lost at Texas A&M, right?

It is not bad enough that he only let's me win one Pickem - NOW he want to expose the fact that my memory is as bad as my Pickem skills!

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I wouldn't be surprised if our lone loss was to ISU in Ames. I don't think Sherri won up there until CP was on campus.

The 2001 Sooners lost their opening conference game at Ames - badly.

I was just wondering if there was a pattern here, if these teams lost to an arch-rival, or if they perhaps split with the #2 team in their division, or what.
All of these are South teams. It looks like three of the four lost in the North.
The best a North team has finished was 14-2. (Kansas won with a 14-2 record in '97. Kansas State was second place at 14-2 in '03, and they were the single loss that the 15-1 Longhorns suffered that year. In '04, KSU and UT tied for first at 14-2.)
Iowa State was second, at 12-4, in '98 when they beat the 15-1 Lady Raiders.
Iowa State was third behind OU and TT in '01 when they were the "and one" in the Sooners 15-1 record.
A&M tied for third with ISU last year when they put the "and one" on OU.
Will the dominant team this year drop one in the South? (I'm sure OU fans hope they do. And Wednesday may be the most likely game for the Huskers to lose, if they lose at all. If the Sooners bring the game they played against UConn . . . it'll be interesting.)

Actually, I just looked it up (on both the OU site and the ISU site), the '01 Sooners lost 81-79 to ISU in Norman.

Was that the infamous game where ISU blew something like a 16-point lead with 4 minutes left, only to have Megan Taylor hit a jumper at the end with the game tied to win it for ISU? That was in Norman and Taylor only played two games there, so I'm guessing it was.

To answer my own question: yep.

LAST TIME IN NORMAN
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Megan Taylor's 17 points included the game-winning jumper at the buzzer as seventh-ranked Iowa State beat No. 19 Oklahoma 81-79.
Taylor's shot in the lane rendered meaningless a late 20-0 run by Oklahoma and gave the Cyclones their second straight road victory.
Angie Welle added 18 points and seven rebounds for Iowa State. Five Iowa State players scored in double figures.
Oklahoma took the lead in the first half and didn't relinquish it until Welle's basket with 8:28 left in the half made it 26-26.
Iowa State led 45-34 at halftime.
The Cyclones were ahead 77-59 with 6:13 left in the game when Oklahoma changed the complexion of the game by scoring 20 straight points.
Sunny Hardeman made three of her career-high six 3-pointers in the second half. Her 3-pointer with 1:32 left in the game put the Sooners up for the first time in the second half, 79-77.
Iowa State's Lindsey Wilson finally stopped her team's drought, tying the game at 79 with two free throws, before Taylor's game-winning basket.
Iowa State outrebounded Oklahoma 37-25 and attempted 14 more free throws than the Sooners. Oklahoma's 25 rebounds and seven free throw attempts were both season lows.
LaNeishea Caufield had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Oklahoma.

Glad you answered yourself because I would have no idea. I was just looking at the final score.

According to the schedule at cyclones.com, it was actually played in Stillwater. Oops. :rotflol:

In the words of Billy Crystal (The Princess Bride):
"Thank you for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?"
What a weird game that was. The weirdest I've ever watched. OU was frustrated all day by ISU and then with 4 minutes to go they suddenly couldn't miss. They could have just sat mid-court and heaved balls one-handed and they would have gone in.
Then, done in by Taylor at the buzzer. Ugh.

As if we need one more reminder of how tough, and crazy, the Big 12 is, it just shows how difficult it is for even a seemingly unbeatable team to make it through sixteen games without stubbing their toe somewhere along the way.

Ah, I remember that game well - sitting behind our bench, watching OU chipping away at a huge ISU lead. Then to have Megan Taylor hit that buzzer-beater on a dish from Lindsey Wilson - wow! We still have the tape of the game and you can see us jumping out of our seats when that ball went in. :D
Still the greatest run I've ever witnessed or heard about: 20-0 in 4:41 right near the end of a game. If ever there was an example of "it ain't over 'till it's over," that was it (even though ISU pulled it out in the end). I was about ready to bash in the TV set when OU went ahead.
Megan Taylor was the Allison Lacey of that era (or vice-versa). Tied or behind with three seconds left in the game, whom do you want to have handling the ball? She performed that sort of magic many times over her four years.
And the weird thing was that ISU wasn't playing to not lose or anything. ISU just stopped making shots and didn't get offensive rebounds, and OU was making absolutely everything.

I stand corrected. The game I was thinking about was the following year, and it wasn't the first conference game. A confident Oklahoma rolled into Ames with only one loss for the season (at UConn) and got obliterated by the Cyclones 82-66.

Yes, we know; and that's why the Sooner Nation cherishes being the only team to have accomplished it................................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...................................well that is until this year. Here's to hoping we can keep it that way come Wednesday night.

Yes, we know; and that's why the Sooner Nation cherishes being the only team to have accomplished it....
And if you want to retain that distinction, you better beat Nebraska. No one else in the Big 12 will (probably).
I'm thrilled with what OU has done this year minus Whitney Hand; it's been fun to watch and really satisfying for a fan of that team to see them come together and play well. They've played beyond the expectations of almost all Sooner fans.
But this business about being the team to stop Nebraska's unbeaten season...
I have to be honest with you, I think it'll take a better performance than OU gave against UConn to gain that distinction. Nebraska is ranked #3 and I'm thinking that they ought to be more like #1A, considering that the conference that Stanford plays in is so stinky that it's really hard to evaluate exactly where the Cardinal are as a team.
Just don't think too badly of the Sooners if they don't beat Nebraska. Nobody else has done it, so sort of a trend has been established for, uh, about 25 straight games now...
Wow, my mind has a hard time wrapping around that number: 25 straight wins to start the season. Nobody in the Big 12 has ever come close to that before, not while a member of this league.
Will the Big 12 get respect if Nebraska runs the table, or will it be considered a fluke, and we still get no respect? Already people are talking about Baylor's title like it was a fluke, and that was just five years ago.

The only "flukes" perhaps are Purdue, Notre Dame, Baylor, and Maryland--the ONLY teams in the last 15 years to win the championship aside from UConn and Tennessee.
