"This is a test of the Emergency Blowout System. The Womens Basketball Fans of your area, in cooperation with Federal, State and Local authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event that your Big 12 womens basketball team has decided to get beat and call themselves 'Toby'.
The following signal you just heard would be followed by official excuses.
This station serves the Big 12 conference.
This concludes this test of the Emergency Blowout System."

The game started just like last year. Nebraska got the first points of the game. Stephanie Jones putting up a nice lil' ol' runner 2-0, Good Girls!

Iowa State would fight back of course. The team traded buckets. Neither team was in their game early on, but the difference was Nebraska couldn't find the basket (25.8% shooting), Iowa State was starting too (47% on 11-of-23), but the Huskers were making plays. Stephanie Jones was getting shots inside as was Alexa Johnson. The first half wasn't out of reach at 34-21 Iowa State at the Break.

Unlike Last Year, Nebraska was within sight of the lead.

Second half however, the Curtis LeMay streak of this Iowa State team starting showing itself when Lindsey Wilson hit a three. Then Welle worked inside. In the space of two minutes 34-21, became 42-27..

(CUE AIR RAID SIREN)

WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Lindsey Wilson, Tracy Gahan and Tracy Paustian led a 25-0 firststrike on Nebraska. The entire Raid lasted about the time a sub-launched nuclear missile off the coast of Florida could reach Washington D.C. By the time Stpehanie Jones' short jumper broke the run with 6 minutes to go:

Iowa State had scored 25 unanswered points and shot 71% from the field during this total devastation.

Meanwhile Nebraska shot 0% and at that point had shot around 26% for the game.

The surprising thing is, Nebraska shot well the second half, once the game was out of reach. The Huskers ended up shooting 43.8% on 14-for-32. The bulk of that was against the mop-up units after the game was out of reach.

Before this post takes a negative tone, and it will take a decidely negative tone I assure you, but Iowa State is a good basketball team.
The Cyclones didn't shoot well against San Diego. They didn't defend interior against KSU very well and their offense was off their game. But what I saw today makes me think that this team realized they took games off and turned it up.
I saw Lindsey Wilson showing aggression inside and out. Her line was crazy 7-of-9, 4-of-4 from three point range, 23 points.
She made Nebraska's guards look like Nebraska's cornerbacks.
What was up with Angie Welle dropping The People's Elbow. 6-for-7 inside all of them muscling up somebody taller and or bigger than her!
Angie Welle beat up 4 different Husker inside players. She was getting position, playing hard nosed basketball. This is something I have never seen in Angie. This was something that should make a lot of people take notice.
Who is this Tracy Paustian, where the heck did she come from. That's another solid kid.
Tracy Gahan had 11 rebounds, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT? Gahan was heads up on the ball today. Melanie Bremer played strong with 10 points and 5 rebounds. It's good to see Bremer playing to her potential. She always had the goods, she just needed the discipline.
And My special thumbs up to Kelly Cizek today. That #35 was everywhere on the floor. Six points, 5 rebounds, and she had an assist in the second half that made Griechaly Cepero look absolutely feckless on a backdoor cut.
If nothing else, Iowa State reminded themselves today that when they turn it on and keep it on, they can bring it on.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK FOR NEBRASKA.

1. Offense: This is the second consecutive game that Nebraska couldn't get a cohesive offensive attack. Today the Huskers only scored on consecutive possession 4 times in the entire game. That is ridiculous. Against Top 100 opposition, Nebraska shots 33%. The Huskers shot 34.9% today.
On the inside, does anybody go to the basket strong beside Keasha Cannon? Anybody? Anybody at all? How many candypants 12 foot fadeaways can we take inside "Charo" and Alexa?
Yes, Stephanie Jones had 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. But overall the game was weak. In the first half she picked up 2 fouls and in the second half, she played a very unagressive game on both sides of the floor, as did just about all of Nebraska's forwards and centers. All of them were passive today. Angie Welle is about as physically imposing as Sandy Duncan, and today she looked like Xena compared to a Milquetoast Husker interior.
And I won't get into the inability for anyone to rebound. True, Alexa Johnson had 7 today. You only got 6 combined from the "High School All-Americans" Charo and Charo Jr.
Oh and speaking off Charo Jr. Lets take a look at Katie Robinette's line for the last two games.

vs. TEXAS 1-8, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 5 fouls
vs. ISU 2-8, 5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 fouls
TOTAL 3-16, 7 points, 9 rebounds, 10 fouls
AVG/PCT 18.7% 3.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 5 fouls per game

Katie Robinette has averaged more fouls than points in Big 12. Any other freshman, I could do with it. But a freshman with her credentials, its unacceptable.

2. Guard Play. Again, with the exception of Keasha Cannon its inadequate.
K.C. Cowgill is the shoting guard, so why is it that she can't she make a shot? 1-for-6 from three point range. It would be easier if she actually did something else. But today she was chasing around and getting beat defensively. Cowgill played 30 minutes today, had came up with 5 points, 3 fouls and a turnover.
Shannon Howell has the quarterback job. You know in the second half, she had a look similar to the one Eric Crouch had on Thursday night. That look of meloncholy resignation. 8 points 4 rebounds for Howell today. BUT, REALITY CHECK.
From the start of the game to the end of Iowa State's 25-0 rampage. Howell had 2 points, 2 assists and 1 turnover

3. LINEUP CHANGES
Clyde Crashcup Sanderford came back today. More changes in lineup in defenses, in offense. A triple post set today inside of the three-guard triangle? If Paul was looking to beef up inside it didn't work.
The Iowa State starting frontcourt outrebounded Alexa Johnson and the Charos 20-13.

Paul looked to give his future point guard Jina Johansen some work. Seeing Jina Johansen out there reminded me of Jacy Holloway. A point guard that looked way to young to be on the court, but getting the job done.
This was Johansen first extended range assignment, and Jina did about what you'd expect from a true freshman. She had 4 assists and 4 turnovers. But she heavily outmatched and outclassed. She's a green kid who's not ready for prime time, yet. What I did like about her is that she did want to challenge.
That was stark contrast to Margaret Richards. We saw last year's Margaret Richards today. She looked slow, played slower. Was beaten on defense like Joan Crawford all day long. She ended up with 2 point, 5 fouls.

4. MENTAL GAME
Once again, in the stressful moments, the Husker lose heart and they lose their mind. The 25-0 run was full of mental lapses. Ball's thrown away. Three-second violations. The biggest one was provided by Casey LeonMorse. Early in the run, ISU worked transition from Wilson to Welle, and Katie Morse is beaten dead to rights, but she tries for the block. The attempt was hard, it was dainty. It was halfhearted. Welle scored easily AND drew the foul. Morse kind of shrugged her shoulder like she was giving a nonverbal "whatever"
And she's the next Karen Jennings? The old Karen Jennings would at least contested the shot with a little contact and a little Moxie.

Outlook:
Earlier this week Paul Sanderford was quoted in the Omaha World-Herald saying "Our goal is to win 20 games this year"
Excuse me while I ROTFLMAO! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Okay, I'm done laughing. That team won't make it to 20 wins. Based on what I've seen in the last two games, if a team can shot at least 37% on Nebraska, this team won't make it to finishing above .500.
I can't believe that this is some team I saw against Creighton in November. That was a shaky team that beat their in-state rival, but I saw a team that at least could put some plays together when they needed to.
Even in some of the losses. In the Tulane game and the Drake game, this Husker team showed that maybe they weren't a solid team yet, but they could be competitive.
Today I saw last year's team, and that isn't good.
Next is Texas A&M, a team that is as uncompetitive and inept as we are. Nebraska should win this game on paper. But then again, didn't we lose to A&M last year?

I forgot to add something: THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I'm embarrassed for the University of Nebraska," Cornhuskers coach Paul Sanderford said. "I really felt like we could compete with this basketball team today, but we just didn't get it done."

Chipper, The start to Nebraska's second half sounds kind of like the start of Tech's first half.

Yellow=OU points per minute, Gray(how appropriate)=TTU ppm
Note from the chart-I think the score was 27-3 before Tech hit their second basket 9 minutes into the game. The Raiders clawed back after that but it was a very steep hill against such a good team.
