Taking the starting lineups from last weekend's games, I wanted to see just how young or old each of the linups are. Below are the starting lineups from last weekend. I've adjusted Oklahoma's because we now know that Andrews will start once again in place of Shoush. I assigned a simple 4-pt system where Freshman is 1 point, Sophomore 2 points, Junior 3 points, and Senior 4 points.

Results are:
<pre style="font weight: 10pt;">
Nebraska 17 pts
Colorado 17 pts
Missouri 16 pts
Iowa State 14 pts
Oklahoma State 13 pts
Texas 12 pts
Texas Tech 12 pts
Kansas State 11 pts
Texas A&M 11 pts
Baylor 11 pts
Kansas 9 pts
Oklahoma 8 pts
</pre>
Average: 12.6
Median: 12
Mode: 11

Oklahoma gets the distinction of having the youngest team, while Nebraska and Colorado the oldest. There are 4 necomers starters, one each for Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. Should probably take a half-point off or something based on that - but I didn't.

Number of freshman starting:
<pre style="font weight: 10pt;">
Oklahoma 3
Texas Tech 2
Texas A&M 2
Kansas 2
Oklahoma State 2
Baylor 1
Texas 1
Missouri 0
Kansas State 0
Colorado 0
Iowa State 0
Nebraska 0

Texas may get 'older' starting tonight. Junior Jamie Carey is projected to start in place of Nina Norman. In that case, new total will be 14.

But what conclusion can we draw from these statistics? The older teams tend to be at the bottom of the standings, and the three best teams bunched together in the middle (age-wise).

Jennifer is the statistician, maybe she can see a pattern in this data.

My conclusion is that Schooner has way too much time on his/her hands.

My conclusion is that the top teams will not drop off much next year or maybe the year after. That may be bad news for the lower teams with older players. On the other hand it says that you can build fairly fast if you have good recruits and good coaching. Therefore, there may be hope for the lower ranked teams to improve while the top teams remain good.

The B-12 could be awsome for the next few years. I expect KU to improve markedly given their incoming class next year and their current youth. On the other hand if your team is stocked with elders and a rescue posse is not signed up and on the way it could be grim for a while. Over all I think next year has the potential to be great for the conference.

Pardon me if I'm currently pretty interested in THIS year however. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Ha, very funny. And it is his. Actually only took me about 15 minutes to do. Was interested, because until someone mentioned that Laura Andrews was starting in place of Shoush tonight, I hadn't realized just how young OU was. I kept thinking that OU was now more middle of the pack in terms of age. Not true, OU is fielding the youngest, most inexperienced team out there and is still in 4th place even after losing tonight against Texas. Not bad.

And I figured ISU was at best middle of the pack. However that's probably because, other than the two senior starters, ISU only has two upperclassmen on the roster (junior Erica Junod and senior Holly Bordewyk). The team as a whole is young, but there is senior leadership in the starting lineup.

Interesting...there doesn't seem to be any correlation between winning %age and age of a team (well, it's -.14 before yesterday's games). Just the fact that it's negative is interesting enough. This tells me that this conference is only going to get better. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
