View Full Version : UT wins by 6...
60-54.
You've gotta shoot the rock to win. OU couldn't do that tonight. Congrats to the Horns, I think you guys are back in first place.
Great night of basketball tonight. Guess I'll mosey on over to the CU-Baylor game...

Man, the Sooners almost snatched another one, and the Longhorns almost let them. Good job by the Horns at the end, staying calm, and continuing to get the ball to Jamie Carey on the inbounds plays. Cool, calm Carey knocked down the free throws.

Some thoughts from seeing first-hand:
1. After all our threads on officiating, there were some missed calls, but I thought on the whole the refs did a fair job.
2. I really like Stephens! She has this image of the big ol' girl that just bulls her way in, but the truth is that she may have the best hands of any player in the league. Any ball that comes her way, just sticks to her fingers, and she can alter her shot with just the hands and wrist. What a beautiful soft shot. It's a pleasure to watch, even when it's a dagger in the heart.
3. Speaking of daggers in the heart, how about Tai Dillard? 0-5, but the sixth one was the game winner! In spite of her shooting average tonight, and with apologies to Carey, I thought Dillard was the best guard Texas had on the floor.
4. Speaking of daggers in the heart, how about Chelsi Welch? If we could just get a couple of our freshmen to have their good games on the same night, we could beat someone.
Well, I had fun tonight.
I had the real radio on the UT-OU game,
I had the internet radio switching around on the other games,
and I had "Gametracker" switching on the other games.
HoopScoop had a few windows allocated, and of course Excel.
Congrats to the happy winners & Get 'em next time to the rest.
I really was rooting for Chipper and the team.
GO BIG 12!

Better stick Andrews back in that starting lineup.....she didn't come pronto magician off the bench tonite.
If OU would have shot the ball better in the first half, this could have been a very winnable game. I think Carey played a great deal of the game, that girl is ice from the free throw line.
Memo to OU coaching staff: Chelsi Welsh is strictly forbidden to even take a single peep at the game clock. She is to be told that there are 15 seconds left and we are down by 2 http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif She was incredible in the last minute, knocking 'em down.
OU had 11 turnovers........that has to be a record http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
And the rebounding edge was 41-40 Texas....not bad for a scrawny post and a greenhorn freshmen against a couple of rebounding monsters.
Wow, Dionnah Jackson was a rebound and 2 points away from a triple double....she was the rebound monster for OU with 9...
and 10 assists.
Maria showed off a few of her acrobatics, just not enough http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif
The defense of both teams was pretty incredible, don't think many took an uncontested shot all night.....well, except for those free throws.
It got to looking like Helter Skelter there at times, pretty entertaining, but I'm not so sure that's what either coach planned.

Thanks for firsthand impressions Soonerman and Swok.
I'm perfectly sure I'm going to be real tired of Chelsi Welch well before she graduates! She is maturing quickly and now her shot is falling as it wasn't earlier in the season. What clutch shots. I have to agree the Sooners did a great job of rebounding, particularly Dionnah Jackson. It seemed to me that the Sooners got way to many of the loose balls. Texas usually does better than they did tonight.
I appreciate the positive comments for Stacy Stephens and Tai Dillard, particularly Tai since most people acknowledge that Stacy is an impact player.
I always root for seniors to have great seasons. I am particularly happy that Tai is having such a good year because she was derailed by injury her sophmore year and was never back to form last year. I expected Tai to be a key defender, but she has been much more. She has really been a good, all-around player. She has been much more assertive on offense than in the past. She'll never be the Longhorns first or second scoring option, but she has come though with some critical baskets in several games this season.
On Stacy - Yes, please, let's give Stacy some credit for something besides being big! I enjoyed hearing the Fox Sports announcer's comments on Stacy during the KSU game. She was emphatic that Stacy was not regularly getting away with fouls and explained why certain plays were not fouls. She also commented several times on how much ground Stacy can travel with her post moves while keeping her pivot foot planted. Not to say that Stacy never gets away with a foul or a travel but just that she's not regularly getting special treatment from the refs. Earlier in the season, Stacy was getting called for a lot of fouls even at home, even against weaker opponents. She reduced her fouls a lot just by getting serious about stopping some of that 'reaching-in' stuff. As my friend says, with a hand as big Stacy's, she's bound to get caught on that one.
Now, if only Alisha Sare can work herself back into the line-up
for the rest of her senior season...

Soonerman -
we don't really have rebounding "monsters", but it would help if we did. We spread it around a lot, like our scoring. Some nights it's Stacy, others it's Bowers, Schreiber, Hastings, etc.
Good game, btw. The radio guys here commented several times on both teams' defense. Welch is gonna rip afew teams' hearts out before she's done. That got hairy for a couple of minutes.

Oh, I don't know.....the way Schreiber has improved her rebounding in conference play, and as carolann mentioned, as large as Stacy's hands are, I call them rebounding monsters http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
OU just doesn't have what I call "rebounding monsters" without Caton Hill....Laura Andrews has the potential, but being a freshmen, is inconsistent at this point. I think our PG leads OU in rebounds per game.
I was really impressed with the way Stacy Stephens played last night, all she has to do is be in position and no one can get the ball from her. She looks much improved, IMO, has learned not to foul and keep herself out of the game. She only got a minutes rest last night.
I noticed Alisha Sare came in right at the tail end of the game with her ?left hand wrapped up pretty solid.
As I mentioned earlier, the defense of both teams was pretty incredible.....and there were few uncontested shots.

I had fun last night, too, listening to the OU broadcast of the game over the internet. For some reason the link on the Texas web page linked to the OU feed. During the broadcast, the two announcers managed to:
-Question the fitness/endurance of Stacy Stephens as she proceeded to score 19 points and grab 14 rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
-Question the Texas traveling routine of flying to away games on gameday rather than traveling the day before and staying in a hotel as OU apparently does. They eventually admitted that the OU men's team recently switched to the same-day travel plan. I was wondering what difference it all made.
-Conjecture as to how good a team Stanford would have if Jaime Carey still played for them. I was thinking about how good Texas is with her!
It was interesting to listen to a game from the other team's perspective.
