View Full Version : Pick'em Session 1 (Let the Wars Begin)
:BIG12:
Generally swok34 has posted these Pick'em threads in the recent past, but I'll go ahead and get this one started tonight, since the first games are all on Saturday.
The game is simple, you simply pick the winners of conference games. There are 17 sessions in all, 96 conference games total. I reserve the right to throw in some juicy non-conference game on occasion (or even two) for extra credit.
Last year there were no scores tossed out, but this year I think the game should revert a little bit, so the worst score anybody has over the course of the conference season will not count. That allows everyone the luxury of missing a session without totally ruining your chances of winning the contest.
I think that given how it appears that the conference is going to be extremely competitive this year, people might not want to give up too early on their chances, because there are bound to be some scores by everyone that aren't close to perfect, and I say that with a wink and a smile.
So, without further delay, here are the games for the first session:
Saturday, January 9, 2010
All Times are Central
Kansas at Kansas State, 11 am (FSN)
Missouri at Colorado, 1 pm (FSN)
Baylor at Oklahoma State, 2:30 pm (CSN)
Texas Tech at Oklahoma, 2:30 pm (TTSN/SSN)
Texas A&M at Texas, 5 pm (FSSW)
Nebraska at Iowa State, 7 pm
Please make your picks prior to the start of the first game. I reserve the right to reject any pick made after the start time of that game. In particular, I recommend that you go ahead and make all your picks well ahead of time, because you can always change a pick later, as long as the games haven't begun. You may not edit to change your picks during a gameday, after the first game has begun, as that might affect the fairness of the contest, as well as make it harder to score.
If you fail to get your picks in on time, and if the session is across multiple days, you may pick those games remaining in order to save the remainder of your session from being a total bagel. This happens most commonly when someone doesn't realize that there is a game or are games on a Monday or Tuesday, so always read the Pick'em Session "N" post as soon as you see it posted, so you can avoid losing chances to pick games.

Sorry guys, I'm back. Just been doing some different things; will probably suck at my pics since I haven't been paying close attention to any team not OU. But I do know that Kansas stubbed their toe early, playing better now and Nebraska is the talk of the town and Griner had 2 dunks in her last game. Absolutely no clue on the Missouri/Colorado game.

KSU hasn't shown much this year. MU played surprisingly strong against Xavier. BU likely, but, OSU seems tournament worthy. OU, I think - too early to tell. A&M likely, but, here again, its early to tell about Texas. Hope to be wrong, but, NU has it all together and ISU doesn't (yet) - best defense here is to blow the Missouri River bridge.:ISU:

Kansas at Kansas State, 11 am (FSN) -- Beakers meet Kittens on the Lower Farm Side of Manhattan. What we have here are the Jayhawks trying to find their rhythm, and the Wildcats trying to find their new team personality. Deb Patterson wishes her new assistant coach has some eligibility left. I'm taking Kansas. They have played solidly through a tough slate of games, they just need to get the parts working in harmony. They'll take a step in the right direction in this opener -- Kansas 71, Kansas State 60
Missouri at Colorado, 1 pm (FSN) -- Missouri has the talent to at least nibble at the midpack, but the organisation to finish 12th. Colorado has a group hot rod at the perimeter, but Edsels in the paint. Somehow I'm taking Colorado. If the game becomes a run and gun game, make mine the Buffs -- Colorado 79, Missouri 72
Baylor at Oklahoma State, 2:30 pm (CSN) -- The league's most exciting prospect meets the league's most exciting player, and this one will be a wild one. Andrea Riley, the Mouse that Roared meeting the U.S.S. Brittany Griner. Who wins that battle should Riley try to drive the lane for a lay up?
As far as the game, Baylor has this one. Take Brittany Griner away from the Bears, they still are a conference contender. Melissa Jones will have a big night. -- Baylor 84, Oklahoma State 69
Texas Tech at Oklahoma, 2:30 pm (TTSN/SSN) --The Lady Raiders will try to make Guns Up faithful forget about Mike Leach and they just may against an OU team who is trying to channel Billy Tubbs, but are finding themselves channel more Danny Nee in some big-name matchups.
Who are the Sooners missing more, Courtney Paris or Whitney Hand? I'd say BOTH, and just in time for Kiera Mallard, who's going to make things hell in Norman, or at least scary enough to make OU think.
The Sooners win, but they'll go through purgatory in a petroleum plaid skirt for it -- Oklahoma 64, Texas Tech 61
Texas A&M at Texas, 5 pm (FSSW) -- The Big 12's scariest defense vs. the Big 12's most overrated offense. Can somebody tell me why Brittany Raven would ever be in any coach's doghouse? It seems that she was in Gail Goestenkoers' during the non-con slate. For the Longhorns to win, they need their best ballhandler in the fold to feed that Kathleen Nash person and a I really like that Kathleen Nash person. She a hybrid cross of Heather Schreiber and Kala Bowers, and the results are rather tempting.
The problem is, Texas A&M hunter-killer perimeter defense, and Raven is the only guard who can effectively deal with it...IF Goestenkoers takes Raven's game out of handcuffs, which she wont.
On the Texas A&M side, They are building an offense, Sydney Colson grabbed the QB spot and she's doing well with it. We are beginning to see Tyra White's ability blossom. Tanisha Smith and Danielle Adams make tough 1-2 punch/outside-inside game. The only real is overall size, organisation and execution. The Aggies still get through on athleticism, but they are finding that the athleticism gap in this league is closing. The only saving grace for them tonight is that Texas' interior still hasn't shown that they a willing to get dirty on the boards and the inside the paint. That is why I see the Aggies sawing varsity's horns off -- Texas A&M 68, Texas 59
Nebraska at Iowa State, 7 pm -- 13-0? Nebraska? No (expletive) way. Yep. Its all true. The Huskers ran the non-con table with Kelsey Griffin getting all Ndamukong on people throughout the slate. Whodathunkit? I certainly didn't.
But this is the Hilton, baby. This darn arena can kill ANYBODY
The missile silos are still ready. Now its Allison Lacey with the hands on the keys, and that future Opal is quite scary and may teach freshman Nebraska point Lindsey Moore a few things.
The question for Iowa State is who else can come to the party? Could it be Kelsey Bolte? She has before...on offense, can she or Whitney Williams step up the defensive standard that Lacey and Heather Ezell did last year. Can you leave Anna Prins out on the island against Kelsey Griffin, or Cory Montgomery. Unlike past ISU-Nebraska encounter Bill Fennelly cannot stay in a zone defense and dare Nebraska to shot the basketball and expect a lot of misses, because Nebraska's developing enough of a shooting stroke to make teams pay...
And there is the specter of Griffin. The Freshman-Sophomore-Junior Kelsey Griffin was a good to very good player but a step short of great...This years' Kelsey Griffin has a fire in her belly, the athleticism to match and the game savvy to put it all together. When Iowa State meets a player like that, they often lose to that player's team.
This is not to say Nebraska will win this game easily? No way. The Huskers have pigeons to probe, too. Vonnie Turner is an awesome defender, when her game's on...But Lacey has made her look feeble before. Dominique Kelley under control is an offensive nightmare, but DK out of control is a nightmare, too for her own team.
And there is the achilles heel..If Kelsey Griffin's not on the floor, how good are the Nebraska Cornhuskers? That a $64,000 question that the whole league is asking...and Iowa State is a prime team to give an early answer.
January will be a referendum how much we can believe that Nebraska's a league contender. Past referendums have concluded that the Huskers aren't ready for contending prime-time. This game will be the beginning of the Huskers showing true contending form. -- Nebraska 74, Iowa State 66

Of course, everyone should have known that a KSU team with four losses outside the RPI top 100 would beat a ranked KU team. It makes perfect sense, right?
