Oh, you lucky guys in Iowa expecting 1 to 1 1/2 feet of snow by tomorrow. Although it's going to be crazy windy tonight and tomorrow. Stay safe!
I do envy you though. I love snow and we get so little of it in Norman.

Snow is just radioactive fallout without the rads.
I hate snow, and I hate winter.

I prefer cold weather to hot weather, but I am still much happier with moderate temperatures. Snow is fun, but not to drive or bike in.
Des Moines and Ames have been hit hard so far, but us in the Cedar Rapids area haven't gotten much (maybe 3 inches?). We've been in a dry area of the system, while an hour north of us in Waterloo they reportedly got 6 inches of snow in 2 hours.
We may get more snow overnight, though. And then the 40 mph winds start up and make things really interesting.
We had around a foot of snow in this area (northwest of Manhattan). That was not too bad but we also got winds up to 30 mph with gusts over that. Pretty much everything from schools to Doctors offices are shut down. They even asked people who could get out to stay away from downtown so they could clear the streets. Not even postal deliveries or the newspapers got through. The capper is that the "Tasty Pastry" coffee shop is closed. You can't get much worse than no coffee and doughnut can you? :D Tonight it is supposed to be VERY cold.
Btw, its been too cold through this snow period to make a snowball or a snowman. What we have is powder. The good thing is the winds have died down and are not expected to ramp up for a while.
Since I have respiratory allergies I am always happy to have a nice clean cover of snow. I'd tell you more but I have to go fire up my snow-blower. ;)
We should be all just fine by tomorrow.

Hello all from snowy Ames. Last night driving home was ok it was after 8:00pm when things got dicey outside. I believe Ames got about a foot of snow. The problem then was the high winds causing white outs. I think almost the whole town shut down, but more and more do I see cars going by. I'm thankful for those people who listened and didn't go out in the snow, but this person is thankful for a day off.

I'm in Dubuque and it was pretty much shut down. I actually live in a small town east of Dubuque and it looks just like the country roads. City did a good job of plowing, but Highway 20 is still a disaster.
Official snow total here was 10.5 inches. Very cold this am--below zero.
I was having cataract surgery yesterday, so I went and stayed with my niece so I didn't have to cancel. Was not a fun ride when her hubby brought me home. We saw a car to in to the median.

It looks like you are now the "lucky" one commish. I hope you and yours are all safe.

If this doesn't fall in the category of be careful what you wish for, I don't know what does.
My first Christmas blizzard. I've been in worse snowstorms (two others in Pennsylvania I can think of). But this is the worst one I've been in with respect to the wind. Gusted to 50-60 mph most of the day.
We always have a tradition of being at my in-laws on Christmas Eve. Luckily they only live about 2 miles away. But it took us 2 hours to get there. The driving there actually wasn't too bad. It was shoveling the 2 feet of snow of my driveway and then shoveling off my in-laws driveway. We just got back tonight and had to reshovel again just to get the car back in the driveway. I'm taking some ibuprofen and going to bed.
We didn't get jaw-dropping amounts of snow. But it was 8-14 inches. So hard to tell exactly how much we got because of the wind. There are 3 and 4 foot drifts as far as you can see and if you happen to get too close to a drift while driving - you are sunk. No way to get out. There are cars littering the roads all around here. That's why all the highways are closed and there are many people stranded on the highway. I really feel for them. What a miserable way to spend Christmas Eve. Emergency vehicles just can't get to them and there are several of them that are stuck as well.
Have some friends stranded in Shawnee, Oklahoma and can't make it back home tonight to be with their kids. It's just too dangerous. Luckily they found a hotel to stay in for the night. And their oldest is home from college so she can take care of her younger siblings till mom and dad get home.
But yes, I do love white Christmases. And did we ever get one.

Y'all be safe and take care. We only got a brushing of the snow on Wed before it headed east...southern NM got more snow and wind than we did.

It's lightly snowing here. We got sleet, followed by rain and now snow. Nothing like western Iowa or Oklahoma.
Everyone stay safe.
