Mizzou 86 ISU 55

...this has to be one of the biggest (point wise) losses for ISU in Ames in ages.

For ISU to lose at KSU by 8, and then four days later lose at home to Missouri by 31, I guess you could say that it was kind of unexpected.

Not a good publicity weekend for the Big 12 competitive-wise:

Texas 70, Baylor 50
Colorado 71, Kansas 50
Texas Tech 95, Oklahoma State 45
Oklahoma 77, Texas A&M 39
Missouri 86, Iowa State 55
Kansas State 88, Nebraska 54

The closest game was a 20 point blowout, and the average win was by over 32 points.

I know you Cyclone fans probably don't want to talk about it - but what is going on? I know I expected a drop-off after losing Gahan, and Taylor, and Welle. But I don't think anybody expected this. You just don't lose at home by 31 to a bottom-tier Big 12 team. Something has to be really wrong.

So what's going on?

Don't ask me. It's pretty frustrating not being able to see any games. All I can say is that there are only 3 seniors and 1 junior on this team.

That's what I was wondering.....though I'm not sure Missouri has EVER had 5 players in double figures and EVER shot this well this season....

Game: 53.8% FG
Game: 44.4% 3-pt
Game: 80.0% FT

05 Lozier, Tracy....... * 5-14 4-9 0-0 14 pts
13 Unrau, Evan......... * 10-16 0-1 1-1 21
15 Barr, Kerensa....... * 5-6 1-1 2-2 13
40 James, Stretch...... * 5-8 0-0 0-0 10
44 Wolford, Terianne... 4-8 2-5 0-0 10

I am very shocked by the margin of victory in this game. At the same time, I'm not sure we should consign Missouri to the bottom tier just yet. I'm sure Cindy Stein hasn't. The Tigers were close in their road game with Baylor and their home game with Texas. At this time, I'd pick Missouri to finish 6th or 7th in conference.

I was at the game and it was not pretty. We got the tip we missed the first basket got the rebound, did this 3 times. That set the tone for the Cyclones. Missouri was on fire. They were banking in 3 point baskets. I don't think I have every seen another team shoot and make as many 3's as Missouri did.

Well, maybe this was just one of those odd, runaway kind of games. But I still think, even if MU was red hot and bound to win, that ISU could keep it from becoming a 31 pt blowout. It just seems to signify something is really out of whack.

And maybe MU is coming on strong. But has been a little hard to believe with losses to Austin Peay and Louisiana-Lafayette earlier in the season.

Guess we'll just have to wait a few more games and see if MU will join OU, BU, and CU for a battle for the upper-tier of the conference (TTU, UT, and KSU already givens).

On Dec 8, 1999, Iowa State played a game at Drake, which I attended. Stacy Frese was on fire. Her teammates were not. Every single one of them (Taylor, Francis, Welle, Gahan, etc) was content to pass her the ball rather than try to score herself. Stacy hit a Big 12 record 10 threes in that game en route to 34 points. Iowa State lost to Drake 90-86.

Sometimes when a person is scoring a lot, teammates will cut down on their own shooting in an attempt to get the ball to the hot hand. Lindsey Wilson scored 25 points against Missouri, but she took 19 shots in doing it. She was scoring pretty well (not exceptionally, though), and everyone else figured they'd be better off if they let her shoot it.

Against Drake, Frese was somewhere around 8-11 on threes at one point. Near the end of the game, she went cold and ended up 10-18 from long range. Even when she wasn't shooting well, the rest of the team had decided that she was going to win this game for them and they kept feeding her the ball. The only reason ISU only lost by 4 in that game is because Francis and Welle finally decided to play offense and they managed to score a few buckets.

Fennelly's offense has always been a "find the open shooter and put it up before you turn it over" philosophy. When your open shooters aren't willing to shoot and your guarded shooters aren't willing to get open, bad things happen.

I also heard that ISU's defense was pretty bad against Missouri. ISU's defense has generally been pretty good this season, so I won't harp on it too much. The biggest problem is that ISU is a team that can't rebound and won't shoot.
