Occasionally when I watch a Tech game I see a player who impresses. So I thought I'd mention those that do. I'm a couple of games behind so lets get started with the Occasional Danielle Page Player with Spunk Awards.

Tech vs Sam Houston State University

#24 Whitney Smith - Got two quick fouls and sat on the bench most of the first half. When she got to play again, she proved to be a great scorer around the basket. She could contort her body every which way to get an open shot and bank in a layup from 2 feet, 1 foot and even under the basket while completely covered up by taller defenders. Made 7 of 9. Such short shots should be easy but they are not always. See Courtney Paris.

Tech vs University of Tennessee at Knoxville

#23 Monique Smalls - Only two turnovers in 35 minutes in her second game of her college career against a top 5 ranked team. Marsha Sharp would approve. She only had two assists but her teammates couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the ball at close range. Perhaps my favorite play in a night to generally forget was an athletic block on Brianna Bass. Sure Bass is teensy weensy but it was a play where Smalls showed tremendous control.

Tech vs Univ Arkansas Pine Bluff

#20 Shay Holmes - Had enough size to play in the post but was everywhere. Spent much of the game guarding Tech's point guard on defense. Quick and athletic, she reminded me a bit of a smaller Dominque Seals but could defend and shoot anywhere on the court. Not sure why she is not leading the team in scoring in their other games this season. She certainly had the skills.

Great moxy by Smalls on that play, good timing, basketball smarts and no fear.
