Here's a quick question for us to discuss. At this point who is the Freshman of The Year in the Big 12....Erin Grant, Chelsi Whelch, LaToya Davis?
Any takers?

I say Grant, she showed she could shoot from the outside tonight 5/6 for 16 pts, and she her assist are AMAZING! But I have to say that Latoya Davis is sneaking up on her! she is a monster on the board! What better thing-2 of Tech's Freshman competing for Freshman of the year! As long as it is either of those 2 I will be SO HAPPY

She may not win FOY, but this Sooner fan wouldn't trade her and her heart for anyone http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

I agree that Grant is far ahead of any other freshman; in another thread I suggested that she was clearly the difference in the game. In all fairness though GrantFan, none of her 5 baskets tonight were outside shots, and she had one assist for the night.
Chelsi is second in the running, and while Davis is a nice little player, I suspect there are several freshman around the conference making as big a contribution as she. OSU's Meghan Craig comes immediately to mind.

You also have Nina Norman, Sophia Young, Metoyer from CO, a couple from Kansas...quite a few good freshmen this year, though I agree that at this point Grant leads the pack.
I wondered where her shots came from, Soonerman.

At this point I would agree that Erin Grant has earned FOY honors, but the season is only half over and I am banking on Sophia Young to give her a challenge. Many of you have not seen Sophia and you will be surprised at her abilities. She certainly can impact a game. Her performance at Tech may have been subpar, but one game does not a season make. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

Looks like Erin Grant in a landslide right now but I think we should wait on conference results. There are some other freshmen contributing greatly to their teams.

If she would be more consistentin her play, CU's Amber Metoyer would definitely be in the mix. Like Welch, Metoyer has a lot of heart and HATES to lose. She wants the ball in her hands when things are tight at the end of the game.
I agree with Carolann that right now, Grant is the front runner.

I'd have to say Chelsi. Yeah, i pull for Tech. But even with my siding with TT, I havent seen Erin "come out of her shell" lol, yes assists are good, but when thats the only reason ppl talk about you...

Yeah, I don't know why Coach Sharp would recruit anyone that is only good at running the offense and getting the ball to players that can score.

If you want a more objective look at both Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, just go look at the cumulative Hoopla stats thus far. The answers might surprise you!

come on, "press" grow up. I know i really said "erin sucks, assists dont do anything, marsha sucks." But really, im saying Erin has way more ability then being just recognized for assists. smartass.

FOY? You first have to decide how you are going to judge it. Importance to team? Stats? Hustle plays that can't be recorded in a box score?
Overall, considering each of those considerations, I'd give the FOY to Erin Grant. However, the Big 12 is LOADED with great young talent. It will be fun to watch these young ladies grow during a rugged Big 12 slate.

Conference play, to me, will determine who should win these awards. I don't mind looking at the season to-date for fun though.
FOY
Freshmen Hoopla Scores:
Sophia Young - 18.4
Tamara Ransburg - 15.4
Erin Grant - 13.8
I would still give FOY to Erin Grant on the season to date. Point Guards generally have lower hoopla scores than post players. Erin Grant is leading the Big 12 in assists. She has shown the ability to score win she needs to do so. More importantly, she is providing excellent floor leadership for a top 10 nationally ranked team. Sophia Young is a good young player but she has racked up her hoopla primarily against weak competition. I look forward to seeing Tamra Ransburg and the other young Kansas players in action. Again though, the good player on a good team usually wins over a good player on a lesser team.
NOY
OU's Villarroel is leading all newcomers with a hoopla of 16.1. Additionally, she has been an important player for a team that has done better than anyone had a right to expect given the injuries on top of graduation losses.
As a Texas fan, I am very happy with the play of our freshmen and with newcomer Jamie Carey, but I don't see them contending for FOY or NOY awards right now.

No question if Grant continues to perform as she's performing now...
Nothing against any of the other freshman mentioned (I too love Welch's heart)...we've got one terrific class in the Big 12.
But Grant (IMO) is going to compete with Ann Strother at UConn for the National FOY.

Well, it certainly looks to be between Chelsi Welch, Erin Grant, Tamara Ransburg, and Sophia Young. They all have some pretty amazing stats for freshman. As someone said though, you have to look at how much that player is worth to that team and how their team would perform without their respective freshman. IMO, Baylor could do without Young and still be as good as they are. Kansas could not be any worse without Ransburg and unless Kansas wins 10 conference games, she won't be in the running for much longer. Chelsi Welch could have an argument of whether her team would be bad without her. Again, IMO, I think that OU could be just as good as they are now without Welch. Luce could definately fill her role, but I'm not sure if Welch brings something "special" right now to OU that makes them better than they would be without her. She definately has heart and plays very hard (that coming from Plainview). Erin Grant, on the other hand, might very well be the key to this Texas Tech team's success this year. Pulling out 7+ assists a game and scoring 7+ points isn't an easy job doing both at the same time. Sheila Lambert is the only one that comes to mind that had that capability. Grant's importance to Texas Tech is definately key and she could be the most talented freshman ever to come to Tech. Again, if the vote comes down to two players, the award will go to the player whose team finishes better in the conference because obviously that freshman helped get their team that far.
RaiderPower, if you want my take, at this point in the season Erin Grant wins hands down.
We have more than 3/4 of the conference schedule to play, however, and any of about a half dozen freshmen could still raise the stakes.

It's always been more important to be a contributing freshman to one of the top teams in conference. Ergo, Grant wins FOY. Well, as long as Tech keeps playing the way they are and finishes at the, or near the top.

Keep in mind that Ohlde won FOY on a bad team, but had huge numbers. Jia had a great year, not as lofty numbers, but helped lead her team to Sweet 16, 2 points shy of a Elite Eight.
Agreed that Erin Grant is the clear leader at this point.
I am not going to attempt to make a case for Nina Norman as FOY based on results so far. The results would not justify that attempt. However, if we are going to discuss the impact of a freshman on her team we should consider where Texas would have been without Nina Norman while Jamie Carey was out, and while she stills continues to play limited minutes.
Some of the difference in numbers between Grant and Norman are the results of Grant having more starts and more minutes per game. I know that she has started and played because she has played her way into the lineup, and that those numbers are important too. I am just pointing out that the difference in their performance while on the court has not been as great as the numbers might lead someone to believe.
Grant obviously got off to a better start. Norman was in a position to develop a little more slowly playing behind Carey. However, since Carey became ill Norman has improved dramatically, and consistently from game to game.
I believe Grant is the clear leader here. But, I think it would be wrong to not at least mention the contribution that Norman has made at Texas.
Wednesday night should be interesting. While Grant is the clear leader, and odds-on favorite at this point, it will give Norman a chance to measure her progress so far.

I got a chance to see Norman, Welch, Grant, Dabbs, and Davis play in the TX/OK HS All star game and you could see why they were all recruited so heavily and the potential of what they could each become (except Davis...she didn't really do that great..who knows why).
When you have the type of freshman/newcomer talent in this league that we have this year...harkens back to the Ohlde/Perkins freshman year. I think it will come down to not only to the individual and team numbers as has already been mentioned, but the intangibles that these youngun's bring to the court. We've seen Norman knock down the big shot when it mattered and Welch's never say die attitude and Young's athleticism and Grant's leadership and composure..and Davis' energy...etc. Yesterday we also got to see what Dabbs can do...
Can't wait to see Norman and Grant play each other on Wed...

Think it's way too early for picking.....though if I'm not mistaken....the committee likes numbers.
