View Full Version : The Race to 800
I was reading a thread on the Tennessee board about an interesting side-story for this season. Jody Conradt and Pat Summitt each entered the 02-03 campaign with 788 career victories. With Tennessee's win over OU, Pat edged ahead of Jody for the first time, although Jody can tie it up again Friday night. Barring a major meltdown, both these coaches will reach the 800 win plateau this year. It should be interesting to see how it stands on Dec. 21 when the annual head-to-head matchup occurs. I'll be keeping an eye on this little competition throughout the season.

As much as I love and respect Pat Summitt, I'm afraid that I have to root for Conradt in this 'little' race! HOOK 'EM, HORNS! (except whem you play the Sooners...)

I predict Conradt will get to 800 first but Summit will have more wins when the season ends.

As Pat Summitt is younger, unless she changes careers or goes into a sudden and prolonged slump, she will end her career with more victories than Conradt. As long as both coaches are actively coaching, I hope Conradt can keep the competition going!

Is this really a race---or a journey---looks like Pat will get there first but they will both be there soon. A milestone yes, a true meaninglful event as to which wins this race, not really. Both are symbols of time, endurance and success.
Tennessee gets wins over Pac-10 foes USC and Stanford.
Texas beats SLC foes SE Louisiana and UT-Arlington.
So, entering Saturday's annual Burnt Orange/Bright Orange battle:

Point well taken, metromaniac. It certainly doesn't detract from either's accomplishments to not reach 800 first. It just adds a little icing to the cake. I feel very fortunate to have witnessed many of their battles over the years as they have traveled the road to this milestone. This rivalry has always been my favorite Texas rivalry. And I wouldn't mind seeing Jody gain one on Pat on Saturday. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

I'm not sure who Deb Williams is. Perhaps she means Bev Williams, as in Beverly (All-American, Class of 1988)

If Tennessee beats Auburn this weekend, they'll play for #800 next Tuesday against DePaul.
Looking way ahead here, if Texas can handle Missouri and Texas A&M on the road and then beat Baylor at home, Jody will go for #800 against none other than our friends from Lubbock (as if that game needs any additional motivating elements). Admittedly, that is looking waaay ahead. One game at a time.
Texas handled their business with Missouri; Tennessee did the same with Auburn. Pat goes for the 800 mark tomorrow.

Well, the race is over, as Tennessee just defeated DePaul in comfortable fashion.
Congratulations to Coach Summitt, that is one incredible coaching feat!
Congrats to Pat for getting there first. Her success is really mind-boggling. At least Jody has the satisfaction of taking the last two head-to-head matchups.

Quite an accomplishment for coach Summitt! Also...both coach Conradt and coach Knight will soon join coach Summitt in the 800 club - all three in the same season, possibly (but not likely) in the same month! I doubt if we will ever see anything like this happen again.

Doesn't this mean that Jody will be going for win 800 with Texas Tech in the house?
Wow, add something else to an already intense rivalry. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
We have to beat A&M and Baylor first.
