Leon Barmore never thought he would be out of his comfort zone on a basketball court but now — glad to be back home with family as well as on those challenging greens at Squire Creek Country Club — he readily admits “It was the hardest game I ever coached in my life.”
... “I give our kids a lot of credit for hanging in there and managing to pull out the game. From my standpoint, it was tough. I hadn’t been in that situation for seven years and didn’t have a chance to put my arms around the game (preparation) because we didn’t know until that day that Kim couldn’t be there,” he said.
“Honestly, I also think our whole group took them (SDS) too lightly. They played great and were well prepared for us. We were fortunate to win and I will tell you, I’ve never been so glad for a game to end,” he said.
Asked what it was like on the bench as Baylor tried to fight off an upset loss, Barmore said that for him, “It was like bringing someone else’s kids over to your house and then being afraid to get on them. I listened and took suggestions for a while, but finally I got tired of listening and knew I had to isolate my own thoughts and just go with my own instinct.” ...
