As many have predicted, early Big 12 home attendance figures are down this year for non-conference games. Overall 8 schools have seen reduced per-game attendance.

Per game averages range from -2,079 for Texas Tech to +2,789 for KSU. While the early figures are somewhat disappointing, I am betting that the numbers will spike upward when fan recognition of the players and teams increases after the season goes into conference play, and games are regularly broadcast between the teams.

Here are the early figures:

--------------------
Baylor
--------------------
2001-2002
7 games 28,834, average 4,119

2002-2003
8 games 30,783, average 3,848

Per game -271, -6.6%
--------------------

2002-2003
6 games 14,208, average 2,368

Per game +469, +24.7%

(Note: Attendance increase entirely due to the inclusion of Colorado State on this year's home schedule. Excluding the CSU game, attendance average this year is 1,699, -200 per game or -10.5%. Also please note that the offical box score for CU's game against Rice did not include attendance figures, so I could not include that game in my counts.)

(Note: Attendance figures for 2001-2002 are missing for two games. Checking with the NCAA website indicates that the attendance was reported for 1 of 2, but I couldn't find which game was reported to them.)

Note: Made some slight figure adjustments after comparison of my figures with the Big 12 Weekly Release. Used an assumed figure for CU's game against Rice this year based on those figures, although I really don't trust them. Also added the attendance for A&M's game against Texas Southern, and corrected a minor off-by-one error in my figures.

Added the attendance figures for last night's Baylor and Kansas home games, and adjusted totals.

Interesting. I think it will pick up when conference season begins. I think the conference as a whole will have a tough time matching last years total though.

Texas attendance figures benefit from the inclusion of the Tennessee game attendance listed as 9,057. I hope that game was exciting enough that some of the non-regulars will want to come back for some Big 12 conference games.
