BU’s Allison expected to play Saturday

Baylor senior forward Rachel Allison is expected to play in Saturday’s Sweet 16 game against Louisville after injuring her left knee and left ankle in Tuesday’s 60-58 win over South Dakota State.

Allison hit the floor after fighting for a rebound with 4:40 remaining and immediately grabbed her left knee. But she returned to the game a little more than two minutes later, and Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said she expects her senior to take the floor with similar tenacity against the Cardinals Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

“She obviously has a knee injury,” Mulkey said at Thursday’s team press conference at the Ferrell Center. “She plans to play. I don’t know how much she’ll practice prior to the game. Rachel’s mentality and her family’s mentality is that she’s a senior, put a brace on it, this is it, do what you’ve got to do. I’ve been told that the injury is not an ACL tear, it may be something to the medial collateral ligament and maybe a little strain to the ACL.

“I don’t know more than that, but it didn’t matter, I knew Rachel was going to have no part of it. She was going to play. And as long as she doesn’t hurt our team, she’ll play.”

Allison also sprained her ankle on the same leg as her knee injury while battling for a rebound, but Mulkey said she didn’t expect that ailment to prevent Allison from playing, either.
