"It was awesome to have a packed gym every single night for three games," Beard said. "It tells you where women's' basketball is about to go."

The gym only holds 2,000, and Beard is excited. It tells you where women's basketball is today at Duke.

From an article on the Duke web site:

Duke Athletics is proud to announce that 2002-03 season tickets sales for the Duke Women's Basketball team have reached an all-time high of 3,302. The current total easily surpasses the previous high of 1,297 season tickets sold last season. This marks the fifth consecutive year that season ticket sales have increased for the Duke women's program.

I wonder what Alana Beard would think about the crowd if her team were to visit Texas Tech, Iowa State, or Kansas State and if she got to experience a sold-out arena reverberating with 14,000-15,000 screaming fans? It's sad that the best player and the best team in the country never get to experience home-fan support that we in the Big 12 take for granted.

I remember watching NCAA tourney games last year at UNC and Duke and wondering where in the world all of the people were? I think Cameron holds fewer than 10,000 people. You put that arena in Ames or Manhattan, and you'd have it sold out every night.

I have to digress to feeling bad for the ISU players. This team has not struggled like this in a long time. I also think that (especially with the in-state schools) they have been the victim of their recent success. We've beaten up on these schools for so long, they are anxios to kick us while we are down. Let's hope that doesn't haunt us in the Big 12 as well!

Hopefully these girls hang in there. I am hoping for a big turn out in Ames on Thursday to show them that we haven't given up!
