... an update to Baylor’s “injury report.” There will be a short item on it in the paper (and on the Web) later, but Baylor coach Kim Mulkey is feeling a little less peppy than normal after undergoing surgery to remove a kidney stone Friday morning. Doctors discovered the stone Tuesday and Mulkey thought she had passed it by Wednesday, but no such luck.

Kim was looking rather wan at yesterday's practice.

Mulkey, who will have to endure a stent for the next week, said she was sore but “hanging in there.” http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/content/sports/college/2009/03/22/03222009wacladybears.html
In "Won't Back Down," Kim tells of fighting through considerable abdominal pain in 2005. She had surgery after the Lady Bears won the national championship. Hang in there, Coach!

I did find interesting the thought that Whitney Z might be in line for more minutes. That would make watching Baylor even more of a must watch than it is now.

Coach Mulkey - been there, done that and it wasn't worth the t-shirt. The good news is you recover rather quickly.

I've never had to resort to surgery, but I've passed more stones than I care to remember.
A daily intake of cranberry juice and LOTS OF WATER really do wonders. [knocks on wood]

Mulkey thought she had passed it by Wednesday
Can't you just imagine this scenario in the dr's office with Kim? ala Kim vs ref
"Oh, no sir, that thing is gone. I got to get on the bus now."
I've heard that is one of the most painful things to have but fortunately have not had to experience such.
BTW, Rae Rippetoe-Blair, the coach for UT San Antonio was a long time assistant under OSU's Dick Halterman. She's been down in San Antonio since he resigned/retired/quit. Phylesha Whaley was an assistant for her the season that OU played in San Antonio in 2002.

Oh my! Get well quick Coach Mulkey.
Something tells me Leon Barmore will do just fine.

Oh no...very sorry to hear this. I can't imagine being Coach Kim's nurse in this situation. I've deal with kidney stone emergencies with both my parent's - it's a miserable experience. Sending good vibes Kim's way!

How awful for Coach Kim. Hope she gets out of the hospital soon. Go get a win for her Lady Bears!
That is a truly miserable thing to have to deal with right in the middle of the tournament. I've had some personal experience with stones, and I've also sat in the hospital while my brother had to deal with them. The one positive aspect of the whole thing is that you could hardly imagine a better back-up coach than Leon Barmore. Everyone can at least feel sure that the team is in capable and experienced hands.

Kim, be [a] patient for once in your life! Do what they tell you to do at the hospital. Leon will fill in just fine for one game. Hope to see you up and at 'em Tuesday.

No verification of this, but another BU fan told us KM was diagnosed with sepsis.

OMG, I hope not. That is not good at all. It pretty much means a systemic infection (whole body). Should have stayed in the hospital in Waco for awhile longer. What hospital is she in in Lubbock?

Scary, isn't it? I haven't heard which hospital.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has been hospitalized after suffering a reaction to medication she was taking following the removal of a kidney stone two days ago.
Mulkey was taken to University Medical Center on Sunday morning and was in stable condition, Baylor associate media relations director Julie Bennett said. Assistant coach Leon Barmore will coach the Bears when they play Texas-San Antonio in the first round of the NCAA tournament Sunday night.
Mulkey, who played and coached with Barmore at Louisiana Tech, had a kidney stone removed Friday before the team left for Lubbock.
Bennett said she was uncertain if Mulkey would be coaching Tuesday night if Baylor advances to the second round.
"We'll just have to wait and see," Bennett said. "We'll know more tomorrow."
http://www.kcbd.com/global/story.asp?s=10051039"Stable condition" doesn't sound like she'll be up soon. Hang in there, Kim!

UMC is a great place for her to be. They are well staffed with personnel and will definitely be up on the latest therapy for whatever is wrong with her. It is the primary teaching hospital for the health sciences center--School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Allied Health, School of Pharmacy. I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she gets to coach Tuesday night.

I wouldn't want to be the nurse or doctor to tell Kim she couldn't watch the game from her hospital room. This must drive her crazy.

I would imagine they're letting her watch it. That'd be less stress on her then not watching it.

I can't confirm this, but at the game the talk from many, many was she was in ICU with some blood infection...the sepsis might be right....but again..no verification.

Baylor coach released from hospital
By BETSY BLANEY Associated Press Writer
Posted: 03/23/2009 04:50:26 PM EDT
LUBBOCK, Texas—Baylor coach Kim Mulkey plans to coach in Tuesday night's second-round NCAA game.
"I will be there tomorrow night unless something unforeseen happens again," she said Monday after attending practice with her second-seeded Bears. "I plan to be there." ...
http://www.publicopiniononline.com/sports/ci_11978546Good news for the Lady Bears! :)
And a snippet of the transcription of the press conference.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey On how she is feeling and how tough it was watching the game from the hospital:
"I'm feeling fine. I did watch the game by myself. I was a nervous wreck before the game because I couldn't see TCU and South Dakota State. I saw LSU play, so I was getting nervous that I was not going to be able to pick the game up and then they switched over and I watched it. I'm very proud and it was a very emotional day for our basketball team and our coaches, and I thought San Antonio played very, very well. And for us to hang in there and win the basketball doesn't surprise me because we have been through a lot this year with a lot of things off the floor and we have found ways to win basketball games, so I was very proud of them."

A pale, tired-looking Coach Mulkey (then again, what's more exhausting than being in the hospital) arriving at this afternoon's press conference.

Mulkey speaks out on illness
Posted: March 26, 2009 02:00 PM PDT
WACO - As the Lady Bears head off to Raleigh, fans are waiting to hear the latest about the health of head coach Kim Mulkey. She spoke out Thursday about what happened.
In short, Mulkey told media members that it was an injury to her liver that sent her to the hospital in Lubbock. She's not sure of the cause but said it could be a reaction to the five different medications she was taking for her kidney stone.
The good news is over the last few days, her white blood cell count and liver functions were returning back to normal.
She says she's feeling great and ready to get back to business.
http://www.kxxv.com/Global/story.asp?S=10078271Good news, indeed! :)
(add) And from the Waco Trib, Kim's own account, ending with "I feel much better than I did, but I’m not Kim. I go moments of being Kim, and then I get tired. ..."
