From the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
-----------------------------------
...In the end, it was enough for Hawaii coach Vince Goo to call the Lady Raiders the toughest team his squad has faced so far this season.

"We were able to stay with the other (ranked) teams we played, but we didn't against (Tech)," Goo said. "Right now I think it's safe to say they are a better team than North Carolina. And if they played (UConn) on a neutral floor right now, I would take (Tech)."

It was the worst margin of defeat suffered this season by Hawaii, which lost to then No. 4 Connecticut (60-53) and then No. 12 North Carolina (61-50) earlier this year.

No offense to TT's fans, but Texas Tech hasn't beaten any ranked opponent so far. Their only ranked opponent was #17 LaTech that beat TT badly in Knoxville 85-76. I know It was ealry in the season, the lady raiders should be a better team now, but definately not better than any team ranked ahead of them. Uconn has played a bunch of cupcakes as well, at least they've beaten #15 Oklahoma. Texas Tech has played very well since their loss, but blowing out Hawaii, Washington, valpo, Wyoming, creighton, Chattannooga and Oregon St doesn't mean their better than Uconn in any way. That quote is just laughable!

Well his team has played both teams so I think he has a pretty good idea of what he's talking about.

I'm sure Marsha would agree that"we haven't proven anything yet." Still I do have to take issue with the 9 point margin by La Tech qualifies as being "badly beaten". Of course, the fact that we were beaten at all was "bad". I will say that we seem to have learned a great deal from the defeat, and have improved dramatically in our play since then.

His team played both and lost to both of them, do you still think he knows what he's talking about http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif? I think he made that comment in the heat of the moment. Lets see if this makes sense to you, Ball St. lost @ Kansas St 61-71, Ball St also lost @Wright St. 46-82! According to this guy, Wright St should be better than Kansas St!

Ummm, well it's entirely possible that he made his quote based on his opinion, subjective though it may be, of having seen both teams play firsthand. That's quite a bit different from seeing scores and making a big jump to a conclusion like in your example.
Just a thought...

I see your nice quote, and raise you another....

from USC coach Chris Gobrecht: "Colorado was extra-poised. They did a good job with our pressure. We've played four top-10 teams and they did the best with our pressure. These were two good teams. At the end of the season, both will be in the tournament."

Not bad...

Is this the same Chris Gobrecht that blamed her loss in the WNIT on "Jet Lag". http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif It may be that its a lot easier to play in Boulder than Manhattan and Jet Lag doesn't bother as much up there. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

Seriously I think both the Raiders and Buffs will do fine this year with or without respectfull comments from opposing coaches. I do like the fact that you are earning praise from your opponents. Congrats to both teams. GO BIG 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

It is also the same Chris Gobrecht that said the Lady Raiders and Sheryl Swoops "weren't that good", or something to that effect, after She and Washington lost to Tech en route to Tech's 1993 national title. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Just a couple of things.

Chris Gobrecht has a habit of making excuses rather than praising the opponent, so Colorado should take those comments as high praise indeed.

No offense to DingoBoy. Vince Goo has over 15 years coaching experience and has averged more than 20 wins a year in his career there. His team played both Connecticut and Tech on the Wahine's home floor. The officials for those two games were almost identical:
Donovan Lewis, Lisa Jones, Todd Apo.
Donovan Lewis, Ryan Wells, Todd Apo.

The two games were exactly 3 weeks apart.

Goo said he thought Tech would beat Connecticut on a neutral court. Now is that because he saw a Tech team that had three more weeks to prepare than did Connecticut? I'd say that if that is the case, the Lady Raiders have had the preparation time to be MUCH improved from their debut on November 10 which was 6 weeks prior. Coach Goo's comments are from a knowledgable professional with a first hand observation. His quote is hardly laughable.

DblT81, I agree with you. Both of those quotes are something to be proud of. I just could not resist the chance to take a (somewhat) gentle shot at Gobrecht. I would think it would be even easier to come up with excuses for a road loss at Colorado than in Manhattan so it is indeed a good compliment.
