Looks like the Jackrabbits will win the Summit Championship
edit: Final 79-69 Jackrabbits get their very first bid to the NCAAs (is that right? I thought they went last year. Maybe that was the WNIT.)

In the "Things that should officially be deemed 'wack'" file, put this years format for the Mountain West Conference tournament. When TCU was added to the conference, the powers that be had to come up with a way to allow 9 teams into a single elimination tournament. They originally had a play-in game for the 8 and 9 seeds before continuing as planned with 8 teams. This year is quite different.
If seeds hold, this is what it looks like:
Day 1: 4 plays 9, 5 plays 8, and 6 plays 7
Day 2: 4 plays 5, 3 plays 6
Day 3: 1 plays 4, 3 plays 2
Day 4: 1 plays 2
Utah and SDSU, the 1 and 2 seeds, get two byes and don't even compete until there are only two other teams to play with. TCU, the 3 seed, merely gets one bye. 4 wins equals a championship for seeds 4 through 9, but two wins equals a championship for seeds 1 and 2.
Bball Girl, tell me what the deal is with this format?

Yuk! Are they striving to ensure the regular season champion has a greater chance of getting the automatic bid? I like the 8-9 play-in game bracket better.
Okay, The UConn Conf. Championship is about to tip. Do the Huskies ever play outside of the state of Connecticut?

And here comes the filler material by Peck. She's talking B12 and Courtney's Nat'l Championship Guarantee. They should bring up Mechelle's recent article, so the rest of the country would understand the true context of CP3's statement on senoir night.
Oh.....42-17 w/ 3 mins left in 1st:eek:

Too right on that. ESPN should rule that no one says a word about the "guarantee" unless the material in Mechelle's column is included, so the whole story is told.
I had a bunch of things ready to go before I left the house, then completely forgot. Biggest pain was not setting the timer for the replay of the Washington championships. Oh, well.
And for sure I wouldn't have cared for watching the UALR-MTSU matchup, though it does look like they gave them a good go for a half.
Congrats to SDSU! JacknCy has seen to it that we know about them, and we have adopted them as one of our own.
Tonight's game? Oh, gosh, don't even want to look. Can't stand that much pain.

ESPN's halftime report is about to have Bubba Paris on with "some profound words for OU's Coach." Not my words, but ESPN's. I wonder what this is going to be?

About that format. The West Coast does something similar. 5, 6, 7, and 8 play, then the two survivors play 3 and 4, then those survivors match up with 1 and 2. So that's how #6 San Diego played four games, while #1 Gonzaga played only two.
Here in Arkansas, that format or something similar was quite frequently used in the high school playoffs. More recently, standard brackets have mostly been used, with byes only given when there were conferences that had other than 4 or 8 teams.

Well, that was interesting.
Bubba, with a little tongue and cheek, said in an emphatic, eye popping, finger pointing display that the onus/pressure/burden is "on you Sherri Coale.....that's right I said it." Bubba Paris
I took it as being semi serious. It definitely made me chuckle. However, I wouldn't put it past the clueless media in taking this story further. Boy, I hope this doesn't snowball into something we don't need before the big DANCE. I think we already have enough pressure as it is now.

Well Coach Elaine from Utah took exception to losing in the 2nd round to SDSU last year so she came up with a "new" bracket idea and all of the coaches but two (Flan and SDSU) voted for it. They used to (like the men still do) have a play-game then everybody played on day 2 - but now Utah and SDSU only have to play 2 games to win this thing.
The bracket is at

Colorado State beat Wyoming 64-56. I really didn't expect that. I still imagined CSU as way down there. Checking the standings did show that they were next to last at 4-12, while Wyoming was 8-8. I knew the Cowgirls are somewhat down, through injury and graduations, but at 16-14, I don't even see them in the WNIT. I DO see UALR, though! :)
Here's a possible story brewing: Arkansas has stated their interest in playing in the WNIT. That could well set up a game between Arkansas Fayetteville and Arkansas Little Rock. Those of you who don't follow Arkansas sports can't even begin to imagine the magnitude of that possibility.
A few years ago when Arkansas and Arkansas State were both in the WNIT, Coach Gardner repeatedly said things to the effect that she didn't see what the fuss was about. I know I've said it before, but it bears repeating, her players assured her that it was a really big deal. Moving on to the game, ASU won the bidding war for the game, sold out the gym, 10,892, AND buried the Razorbacks.
One thing about it, Coach Collen would never make that mistake. Back then I was confident that ASU would win, this time, I am not quite sure. My guess is UALR in a close one if it's in LR, I'll give it to Arkansas if it's in Walton. Well, anyway, we'll see. It's something to look out for.
