Junior Jamie Carey (Thornton, Colo./Horizon HS) has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, and her playing status will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis. Carey will not play against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, Dec. 15, which is the No. 23-ranked Longhorns' next game.

Senior guard Alisha Sare (Lewisville, Texas/Lewisville HS) has been lost to the team for a six-to-eight week period. Sare sustained a sprained left wrist during Tuesday's game against TCU, and that injury will require cast immobilization and subsequent rehabilitation.

I really hate to hear this, I have always liked watching Alisha Sare. Wasn't she the one that lit it up big time vs TCU the other night?

And mono can be it's own small nightmare given the length I've seen it takes to fully recover one's energy. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif

With the temporary loss of Jamie Carey and Alisha Sare, the teams loses a lot of court maturity and its primary 3 point shooters. The team's next best 3 point threat (last year's primary 3 pt threat), Heather Schreiber, has been playing a lot at power forward this year. Alisha is averaging 9 points in 11 minutes per game. While Alisha hasn't had the big name knee injuries, she has been effected by injuries now 3 out of her 4 years at Texas. In my experience also, the effects of Mono tend to linger. Jamie's endurance and strength may be effected for the rest of the season.

While the team will miss Alisha and Jamie's 3 pt shooting and their maturity on the court, the positive news is that some other guards have been playing well. Nina Norman and Tamra Cobbins have both been playing well at the point. In the TCU game, Nina had 5 assists to only 1 turnover in 17 minutes. She also had 7 points and 2 rebounds. She is very aggressive on both ends of the floor. Kala Bowers hasn't been shooting as well this year though her overall game has drawn praise from the coaches. She may be able to step up and score more. Coco Reed can be quite exciting on offense though she is not a 3 point shooter. She can definitely contribute some points.

I don't agree with other observers who think Tai Dillard can play point guard. It isn't that she doesn't handle the ball well enough or pass well enough. The offense just bogs down when Tai is at point. I hope the coaches give the freshmen a chance first - Nina Norman backed up by Tamra Cobbins.

As a freshman Erica Junod was slated to play, but she contracted mono just before the start of the season. Fennelly redshirted her rather than deal with the long time it would take for her to regain her strength. It's a nasty illness for an athlete (or anybody, really) to contract.
