LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp announced today that sophomore forward Dionne Brown (Georgetown, Texas) has been granted her release from Texas Tech University.

Brown, who had played in six of 10 games this season and was averaging 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds, has asked to be released from her scholarship and Sharp has granted her the release.

"Dionne has requested to be released from her scholarship and the Lady Raider basketball program and her request has been granted," said Sharp.

Sharp has always had a policy not to discuss personnel decisions and will not comment on this issue any further.

Now this is dreadful news! I am a lot more upset by this than by the loss of Plenette!

This is disappointing because Dionne Brown looked so promising as a freshman before she started having injury problems. Still, the Lady Raiders have weapons remaining. Brown can now take a year off and start fresh somewhere else if she wants.

I agree - this bothers me a lot more than losing PP. At this point, I don't have a clue what happened. I did send out a couple of notes today to people asking them to PLEASE tell me this was the last bomb that would drop this season.

I know Dionne wasn't totally happy with her playing time last season after she came back from her injury. I think the coaches talked to her and let her know she would be a big part of things this season so she stuck around. I felt like she had been contributing nicely to the team so far, so I am kind of surprised she decided to leave. Of course I am pretty much out of the loop with the team this season since I am not in Lubbock. Mid-season departures always surprise me, though. I mean, yes, she will be able to play in the spring for somebody next season, but you give up a semester of basketball when you leave like this, as opposed to sitting out a season, then coming back for two full years after that.

I really hope things work out for Dionne. She seems like a good kid, and she has a hell of a lot of basketball ability.

Good grief!! So much for all that depth at the 4 & 5 spots. This really surprises me especially since she started off pretty strong early in the year, but was then again had a few nagging injuries. I think Dionne has some talent and I wish the best for her in whatever she decides.

Geez I hate this. Dionne is one of my favorites...she's incredibly athletic, has a ton of potential and seems like a great kid. I know she's struggled getting her shot to fall this year, but she's had some good games this season and been an important part of the team. We all wondered why Dionne didn't play against Vandy, but according to Ryan Hyatt a) she was still a bit under the weather after the bad flu she got on the NJ trip and b) playing the 3 guards didn't lend itself to having Dionne on the floor instead of Casey. Dionne didn't look good on Saturday, she was limping and looking grim and didn't have the usual smile.
