So your team commits a mere nine turnovers, out rebounds the opponent by six and your star offensive player scores 27 points, pulls down nine rebounds dishes out six assists and doesn’t commit a turnover in 40 minutes. Sounds like winning formula, right? Not when you are playing a methodical, experienced Villanova and Trish Juhline.

Saturday night in Boulder Villanova defeated Colorado 59-54 in the championship game of the 16th annual Coors Classic. They did it using their spread offense, running the clock on every possession and turning to Juhline every time they needed a basket. It was just enough to overcome a more athletic Colorado who simply never figured out how to defend the Wildcats and were too dependent on junior center Tera Bjorklund.

Trish Juhline was the difference maker. Every time the Wildcats needed a basket she was able to produce. She scored 12 of her team’s last 24 points. Colorado was not consistently able to figure out how to slow her down, regardless of who they put on her.

For the game Juhline was 8-17 from the floor including 4-9 from three point range. And when looking at the stats it was three point shooting that was the difference. Both teams made 22 field goals, but Villanova was 7-23 from behind the line while Colorado was 1-5. Additionally, they turned the ball over five times in the game, none of them coming in the second half.

Defensively the Wildcats played behind Colorado’s star post Tera Bjorklund and put pressure on the perimeter. The gamble was that Colorado wouldn’t be able to win with only Bjorklund scoring. It worked. Although junior guard Kate Fagan was able to score 13 they were sporadic and not enough o make Villanova to change their strategy.

Perhaps the key play of the game came with just under three minutes to play and the Buffs trailing by one. With the possession and plenty of time on the shot clock junior forward Randie Wirt caught the ball at the foul line and hopped. Her travel gave the ball back to the Wildcats and seemed to take the fight out of the Buffs.

Ohio State won the consolation game over Hartford 77-49.

The all-tournament team: Courtney Coleman, Ohio State; Courtney Mix, Villanova; Kate Fagan, Colorado; Tera Bjorklund, Colorado; MVP Trish Juhline, Villanova
