What can you say about a game with a score of 90 to 25? I have a few observations.
Last night Tai Dillard started at the 2nd guard spot and Mercedes Williams started at power forward. Kala Bowers and Annissa Hastings came off the bench. In the 2nd half, the starting guards were Jamie Carey and Nina Norman.
Guard Line-Ups - Tai Dillard and Nina Norman both give us more quickness at the second guard spot. Kala is a great choice for a scoring threat off the bench. Tai is probably expected to be our perimenter defensive stopper. Nina Norman is playing very well and pushing for more playing time. Will she be starting by conference? She really pushes the floor up the floor which is what Texas wants to do this year. Also, the combination of Nina Norman at the point and Carey at the 2, frees Carey, an excellent outside shooter, to move without the ball to get open for shots.
The Front Court - A lot of people probably didn't give that much thought to the loss of Tracy Cook, the hardworking overachiever. I don't know why. Texas is still looking for the right player to to step up and help Stacy in the post. Southwest Texas, who we play next week, has a strong 6'2" post player in Tori Talbert. Then Texas will get a bigger test at New Mexico where Center Jordan Adams has started off the year very well.
Stacy Stephens - Stacy was called for 2 offensive fouls which I thought were pretty bogus, but this is not a whine. The good thing is that Stacy got aggressive in a good way. She scored 10 quick points, powering her way to the basket, before she went to the bench to let the subs play. That's the right way to channel frustration on the court.
