34-32 BYU at the half. Stephens sat most of the half with 2 early fouls. Texas sounds a bit over-anxious, missing lots of shots from the floor and the foul line. Carey is as advertised so far, playing the entire way and connecting on 10 points. Nina Norman has played well, also.

If we can get settled down in the second half, this one should be ours.

Well, instead of settling down, they're falling apart. BYU by 16 with 11:30 to go. No shot will fall.

Is this Texas' first game playing away? I'm so, so glad that OU has already gotten their first road game away before tonite....
and I think it made a difference.

Yes. Fouls galore. Stephens, Schreiber, Williams, and Bowers (I think) all fouled out. Stacy only played about 7 or 8 minutes. Even worse was that Texas couldn't buy a free throw.

Nothing like a cold dose of reality to start the season. Maybe we've got our bad game out of our system now. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Now, I could be negative like some other bball fans were about TTU's loss to LaTech, but this was JUST the FIRST game of the season for UT. Obviously, we knew that BYU was going to and will be a tough team this year just like we knew LaTech is. So why put so much on the first game of the season?? We know that every team will be totally different at the mid part of the season than they were at the beginning. So my question is, why did so many people think that TTU was "overated" after just one loss to a very athletic LaTech team? I happen to think that UT is deserving of a 10-15 ranking which is where they are at. BYU on the other hand should and probably will be a top 25 team very soon. OU's game against Tenn is another instance where some were saying that OU is going back to the gutter, but they won't. It is only one game and at that, the FIRST game!

Whoever thinks TTU and Texas are overrated is an idiot, But OU is a different story. OU lost too many impact players from last year. I don't think last year's team would have struggled beating Tulsa. But also It's still early, alot of their new players might be ready for battle come Feb-March but right now OU isn't playing like a top 25 team. I think pretty soon they will be out of the polls, but who cares about the polls anyway? as long as they play well at the end of the season to make the tournament and make some noise in the big dance that's all everyone will remember them for this year!

Dingoboy, so what did you think of OU's game w/ Tulsa? Did you see it? Or just see the score?
Do you know anything about Tulsa? They have 2 transfers, from Illinois and ISU--and Alison Curtin is the real deal. This wasn't the same Tulsa team OU clobbered last year. Tulsa will make some waves in the WAC.

Yes, it's early in the year. What's important is that at critical times in the game, OU had 3 true freshmen on the floor and they held their composure very well on an away court. That will prove very valuable this season, IMO.

Did you all watch the scores of the other games last night?.....

I was so surprised with some of the halftime scores and how many games were being played so close......AND then I realized that it's November 22nd, not January.

Teams are just now starting to play...with a game once a week, it's hard to get into the rhythm of 2 or 3 games a week....
new coaches and/or new players on teams don't exactly have their starters/substitution patterns down......

I thought the OU team that played in Tennessee looked mighty good for a bunch of newcomers playing the #2 team in the nation...and tomorrow we may find out that OU was actually playing the #1 team in the nation.

We, OU fans, knew that Tulsa had become a formidable opponent when they beat SW Missouri State in Springfield.....has anyone ever been to a game in Springfield? They LOVE their team, and they are tough to beat in that venue.

I agree with Jennifer........Tulsa and Allison Curtin are going to make some noise in the WAC. Curtin is absolutely awesome, she was on her way to breaking some records at Illinois. The coach at Illinois suspended her in the summer of her junior season and obviously, she had some other issues with Grentz.....Curtin landed at Tulsa because of McConnell-Miller, who was an assistant coach at Illinois PRIOR to this Tulsa job and actually was the one to recruit Curtin for Illinois.....

RP1, I was about to post the same thing, but you did it for me. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/biggrin.gif The first game of the season is tough and it doesn't make a season. I'd rather have a team that finishes strong, but a win on the road would always be a nice way to start. It's a long season folks.

can i just add, and this isn't an excuse for anyone's results, but just a comment...how bad are the referees so far?

I will excuse it because it is early, but the kind of officiating I've seen so far isn't going to cut it come Jan. 8.

End of rant.

As the sensible say, better to lose and learn early rather than late. I can't say it isn't disheartening to lose so badly. Yuck.

Stacy Stephens has got to do whatever it takes to stop getting called for so many fouls. As Conradt said, this team won't go far if Stacy can't find a way to stay in the game. Stacy and Kala both have a bad tendency to reach. Annissa Hastings has not been rebounding in exhibition or this first game. If Hastings can't contribute a lot more rebounding and some scoring, we're going to have to see a lot of Heather Schreiber at the four. On the bright side, moving Bowers to the 3 and Schreiber to the four makes room for Nina Norman and Jamie Carey to be on the floor at the same time. Nina Norman has been better than I expected early. Her penetration ability really helps the team. Mercedes Williams also continues to show how much she has improved. Unfortunately, she hasn't shown the ability to shoot the way Tracy Cook did. Tracy Cook scored in ways that really complimented Stacy Stephens.

Don't worry to much about this loss Texas fans. BYU is a good team. Iowa State fans like me know this all to well.
