whew......at least OU managed to stay in them http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Hah! Kansas State will now experience what Iowa State went through a few years ago. That is, every time they win any game against anybody, their ranking will tend to keep rising until there is no place left to go. The target on their backs will get larger and larger, and the pressure not to lose will build and build. Finally, eventually, inevitably, they'll lose a game to someone somewhere and everyone will wonder, "Gee, were they really all that good?"
And that's when the second part of their season begins, and a new adventure starts. As an Iowa State fan, I'm happy to have a vacation from that kind of pressure -- you're favored to win EVERY GAME you play! -- and instead root for Kansas State from the sidelines. Let them have the pressure for a while, while we enjoy the luxury of at least one year of lowered expectations.
Bill Fennelly said the other day that Texas Tech and Kansas State were the two teams in the Big 12 that have a real shot at the Final Four this year. Good luck to both!

Well, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if Texas Tech, KSU, and Texas all made the final four. Do I think it will happen? No. We will all be beating up on each other too much.

But that doesn't matter. NCAA Tourney sites are already selected. For instance, OU doesn't have the pressure of making sure they finish in the top 16 of the nation. They know they will host. They know they have a much better than 50-50 shot at making the Sweet 16 with having a home court advantage in the first two rounds.
What matters is that OU has a conference like the Big 12 to become battle-tested and have plenty of opportunities to fine tune their game prior to March. I say, thank goodness we are in the Big 12!

I know it is not central to your point dem, but I assume Kansas State and Stanford owe their 'elevation" this time more to UConn's loss to the Houston Jaquars than our victories. Which kind of makes your point btw.
Thanks for your positive sentiments for K-State. I have always been an ISU fan in the B.F. era with an exception for their games against the Wildcats. The rest of the Big XII is my next favorite team. You better enjoy your time off the center stage because it won't last long and you won't be far from the spotlight.
I was glad to see that 5 of our teams are still in the top 25 and I can't imagine that Colorado is too far out.
GO Big 12!!!
You're right about Colorado not being too far out. In the first Coaches poll Colorado was "#26" ie.. top of the 'others getting votes" list. I haven't seen the full new AP poll, but in the initial poll they were at #32.

Oh, that is the corollary that I forgot to mention: Anytime any team just above you loses any game to anybody, your ranking will rise even if (ESPECIALLY if) you don't even play.

Tell you what though. If its all the same to you I will just go ahead and enjoy this for a while.
I think it does help to get noticed by recruits and NCAA selection commitee folks. I spent too many years as a Nebraska football fan to not like seeing a high ranking. It always helps get you to a decent bowl.
Of course it is a mixed blessing.

Absolutely...... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
New ESPN/Coaches' Poll:
1. Duke
2. Tennessee
3. Kansas State
Well, that's it, solidly in place as the third best team in the country. Just about nowhere to go but down. But actually . . . if Tennessee should falter just a bit, and KSU keeps looking solid, don't be surprised if they make it to #2.
11. Texas
No change. Other teams moving past them in both directions but in their case, an 0-0 record not quite enough to make a move. However, see Iowa State below . . .
13. Texas Tech
Lose one, drop six spots. That's how it goes in the few few weeks of the season.
18. Iowa State
Pretty nice move up from 21, as a result of . . . well, nothing. Record still at 0-0. Just an exhibition game against a Division II team. At this rate, maybe they can hit top 10 if they win their season opener!
25. Oklahoma
Amazing how you can get pounded down (from #19) for losing to the nation's second-ranked team. Better not play Duke, that could put you right out of the rankings.
27t. Colorado
Virtual certainty that if they have a solid win in their opener against #41 Rice, they'll be back in the top 25.
39. Baylor
Now, you KNOW they're going to be winning a bunch of games during the pre-conference season. Will it be enough to push them up to the top 25, even though the average RPI of their opponents is about 200? Quite possibly.
