I've been reading a book called "Net Prospect: The Courting Process of Women's College Basketball Recruiting......just wanted to pass along that it's a very informative book about DI, DII, and DIII recruiting....think there's is maybe some NAIA, though I'm about halfway through the book.

Seen comments from Julie Goodenough when she was recruiting at the D3 level (who have NO scholarships, imagine recruiting a kid to play basketball for you AND they have to pay their own way. D2 has 10 full scholies, though they can split those up any way they chose......5 full, 10 half.

Also seen comments from Cisti Greenwalt on her recruiting process.

Thanks swok. Jody Conradt has talked a little about the recruiting process the last couple of days in reference to Tiffany Jackson. Conradt talked about how the recruiting process has intensified. She mentioned the growing prominence of elite summer events that are not structured around teams but around talented individuals invited to compete against other talented individuals. These events result in coaches all following around the same group of girls. Conradt said she had never gone through a recruiting process like that involving Tiffany Jackson.

I think Women's Basketball really exploded on the public scene this last year. We are seeing the results this year in the vastly increased television coverage, and in the attendance for exhibition games. Unfortunantly, we are also seeing it in the changes in the recruiting process. The girls' recruiting is emulating the guys, which is NOT a good thing.

On the other hand, the jury is still out on the picking process. Are the players getting all the publicity, attending the elite camps etc., really the elite players? Girls tend to develop team loyalties earlier and stay more dedicated to them, so there may be a lot of really good impact players not going through the whole elite camp scene.

I think about Wecker, Koehn and Ohldie - were they nationally known as high school players?

Wecker was top 40 and Koehn was top 70 according to Blue Star. Ohlde wasn't ranked, but post players are notoriously hit-and-miss anyway; Welle barely cracked the top 100 herself.

I don't think women's recruiting is anywhere near the men's....
though it's easy to see how it could get there.

There is a discussion in the book about college coaches talking to high school coaches vs. "club" coaches. AAU ball has been an influence for some time now. In men's, there are some really, really bad apples in club ball....like Pigg....women's may get there, but I don't think it's there now. Women seem to rely heavily on their parents in going through the recruiting process, though either the HS, CLUB or both could be involved. A lot of HS coaches take the attitude that they are as involved as the parents want them to be.

I think it would be a GREAT idea for any player interested in deciding where she wants to spend her basketball playing days to read this book....the book recommends that athletes start taking unofficial visits as their junior year and make a list of pro's and con's of each school....

the author interviews coaches, athletes, parents, hs coaches, club coaches. She had athletes fill out an anonymous questionaire about their recruiting process AFTER they had signed......and went on to interview 4 or 5 of those girls, Cisti Greenwalt and her parents being one.
