Two high school basketball players have decided there may be a new home for them in West Texas.
Seniors Shauntel Nobles of Fort Worth and Marissa Ashton of Dickinson have made verbal commitments to join the Lady Raiders basketball team for the 2009-10 season.
Nobles, a post player from Justin Northwest, has played three seasons with the Lady Texans since joining the squad her freshman year.
Rodney Nobles, Shauntel's father, said the two were impressed with the program's style which ultimately made the choice of Texas Tech over schools like Baylor, New Mexico and SMU an easier choice.
"The coaching staff is just excellent (in Lubbock)," he said. "I think she will fit in nicely with the team there."
Shauntel Nobles averaged 19.7 points per game and 15.6 rebounds per game last season, leading the Lady Texans into the first round of the Class 5A state tournament before being knocked out by Flower Mound Marcus.
She said her decision came just after attending a basketball camp by head coach Kristy Curry, where Nobles was able to get a better look at the coaches, city and Tech facilities.
"After camp, we had a chance to tour the campus and buildings and I just loved everything," she said. "(Coach Curry) is a very comforting person. She makes you feel just as important to the team and program as she and the program feels to you as a player."
Nobles wrapped up the 2007-08 season with District 5-5A Offensive Player of the Year honors after winning the Offensive Freshman of the Year award three years ago.
Ashton could be one player feeding the ball to Nobles if both players sign their official letters of intent in the fall. The Dickinson guard helped lead her team to a second consecutive appearance in the 2008 Class 4A state championship final. The Lady Gators finished 35-5 as Ashton led the squad with 22 points and 13 rebounds in the two state final games. The Lady Gators beat Plainview, 51-42 in the state semifinal, before losing 50-47 to Dallas Lincoln in the championship game.
She averaged 16 points per game to go along with 10 rebounds per game this season.
Rob Amboree, Ashton's summer AAU coach, said the speedy guard was looking at two or three other schools, including Texas. He said she is the type of player that can always contribute on the floor when she is in the game and can completely take over.
"She's very athletic, very fast and shows her presence on the inside and outside," he said. "She can push the ball up the floor quickly and is a constant matchup problem for teams."

Justin Northwest post Shauntal Nobles has given an oral commitment to play women's basketball at Texas Tech.
Nobles averaged 19.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game in 2007-'08 and was named offensive player of the year in 5-5A.
A visit to the Tech campus left Nobles excited about the possibility of attending the school and expanding her skills under the eye of associate head coach Bill Brock.
"It was really important that they liked me as much as I liked their program," said Nobles, who was also courted by Baylor, New Mexico, SMU and Louisiana Tech. "I was really happy that they want me, too, because I was really interested in their program."
Oral commitments are non-binding. The earliest a member of the Class of 2009 may sign a national letter of intent is during the early signing period in November.
