From what I've seen, I don't think OU is getting the respect that they deserve in these pre-season polls, which will probably mean some extra motivational material for Coale. I think they will be in the thick of things (at least top-16) by season's end. With Hill and Jackson leading the way and some talented newcomers adding to the mix, I think they will surprise people (outside of the Big XII - we already know them too well http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif).

I don't know what the people and Wommen's BBall Magazine are smoking, but they obviously can't see through the haze.

That's ok, Bevo........OU's young team may need all the motivation it can get. Though I've held my opinions until I see them play in at least an exhibition, I just don't see them falling off the edge. Hey, at least Lindy's recognized them http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Here's a matrix of all the rankings released to far, including Street and Smith's. I haven't found the S&S elsewhere, not sure if it's been released in general yet.
Big 12 teams ranked in S&S:
5. Kansas State
18. Texas
19. Oklahoma
21. Texas Tech
TT's ranking is the only one of these that baffles me. THey're still my early favorite to win the Big 12.
http://www.geocities.com/wbballz/rank.htm

Also of note:
Pepperdine #22--the same Pepperdine that played in Norman??????
Yeah, so that was last year and I'm sure they have new recruits, but that was one of the worst teams I'd seen in a while. I did read that that was about the worst they'd played all year....
TCU-unranked I think TCU will surprise some people this year.

A Tech fan who subscribes to ASGR's newsletter Reported-
Addidas sponsored ASGR published:

#6 Texas Tech
#7 Texas
#11 Kansas State
#14 Colorado
#22 Oklahoma

IMO, KSU needs to be higher, OU should be higher, Tech should be lower... but this is better than some we've seen. However, ASGR goes on to totally miss the boat on their Preseason AA lists. They apparently had 6 five player preseason All America teams. That's 30 players. Not a single B12 player listed though.

I haven't seen the lists but to say that among Ohlde, Wecker, Koehn, Stephens, Schreiber, Pierson, Perkins, Scott, Lappe, Jackson, Hill, Wilson etc. there is not a top 30 player is crazy. Ohlde was first team All Big 12 as a sophomore in the top conference in the nation last season. How can anyone say she isn't one of the top 6 centers in the nation?

Now for my comments (worthless I know).

No way are there 42 teams better than Oklahoma right now. That just blows my mind. Oh yeah, I forget that these preseason ranking really mean nothing. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif Except maybe to be a motivational tool anyway.
I'll eat crow if I'm wrong, but I just don't believe it.

Colorado--I think they should at least be on the radar as well.

Notice how large the variations are from one poll to the next. Iowa State ranked top 15-20 on one poll, unranked on another. Same for Colorado, same for Oklahoma, etc. Bottom line: everybody's just guessing. Right now, anybody can make any prediction they want without looking like a fool. Get in while you can and make your guaranteed-to-be-incorrect rankings early, because the longer you wait the more likely people are to remember your silly mistakes later on.

This is rather a unique year in women's college basketball.....
meaning it's wide open and no one really know's who will be the team that will bust through.

I'd have to say frontrunners IMO would be Tennessee or Duke.....
can't even pick a 3rd and 4th who I think will still be standing come April.......though, I have a feeling one of those teams will be someone who will surprise us all.

I purchased a copy of Street and Smith this weekend.....
I typically only purchase one preseason magazine a year and it has been Street & Smith the last two years......at least they give some information on High School and last years stats on college players..........

but, I failed to read the lead in to their rankings, otherwise I would have kept my $7 bucks.........

"Hey, it was fun while it lasted.
For one shining season, the Big XII got to claim it was the best women's basketball conference in all the land. But reality has asserted itself, and once more the SEC is the queen of the game.
blah, blah, blah, blah........................

In other words, go south, young woman - The Big 12's hegemony was just a momentary aberration"......... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/mad.gif

OK, them's fighting words, all.....time to kick some, the Big XII will have to continue to fight for respect.... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

May every BIG XII team STOMP their opponents.....hey, at least until January 8th... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/tongue.gif

What has surprised me so far are the national rankings, or lack thereof, of OU. Maybe Notre Dames struggles last season left the rankers with a *one shot wonders* attitude toward OU's chances this season. I wish OU had some of the other top 10 on their schedule besides Tenn. It will be tough for OU to beat Tenn so early in the season with so many new players. I think they would have a good chance against many of the others. I think the media will learn not to underestimate Coach Coale, just like they learned not to underestimate Fennelly.

On November 10, I will be one huge Sooner fan for a couple of hours.

DblT81, On November 10 I will be a big OU fan right after I am a huge TTU fan! To tell the truth, I usually root for OU except for when they play the Lady Raiders.

I think the media are seriously underating OU, and Coale will make them pay!

OU also has Stanford @Stanford on the schedule in early January. By then, we should begin to see how OU is shaping up. I agree, beating Tenn at their place, first game of the year with four new starters is asking a little much.

ah, but sometimes "newness" is the best secret weapon. Isn't Tennessee also replacing at some position's?

I think OU will give them more a run for their money than folks realize. If they can come out and play well, it will certainly test the "pollsters".

Ah yes, I forgot about Stanford. That will be a good chance for OU to make a statement. We'll have to wait till the season starts to see how OU will play. It will not surprise me one bit right now if they take that Stanford game.

OU also plays at TCU in Dec. They are a Top 25 team in some polls, and could face North Carolina and Uconn in Hawaii in late Nov/early Dec. So, OU might have faced 3 Top 10-15 teams and another top 25 team come conference play. That'll certainly help get the newcomers prepared for the Big 12 race!
