Im curious to know what each teams projected starters are for the season. Im curious to look at possible matchups with opponents.
I would also like to ask the following questions and get everyones views??
1. Most underated player in the conference?
2. Best defensive player in the conference?
3. Best three point shooter in the conference?
4. Which team has the best or deepest bench??
5. Preseason coach of the year?
6. Big 12's biggest surprise team of the year??
ISU's likely starting 5:
PG Lindsey Wilson Sr.
G Erica Junod RS Jr.
G Anne O'Neil RS So.
F Mary Cofield RS Sr.
C Lisa Kriener So.
The first three are virtually guaranteed. RS Fr. Brittany Wilkins may start at center if she outperforms Kriener in practice, but Kriener has the upper hand for now. There is also a chance that Cofield's spot could be taken by So. Tracy Paustian or So. Mary Fox.
Starting lineups are always a fun thing to speculate on in the preseason, and mine usually don't pan out exactly right. I think Jody Conradt may likely add a point guard to the four returning starters that ended the season last year as follows:
PG Jamie Carey or Nina Norman
SG Kala Bowers (returning starter)
SF Heather Schreiber (returning starter)
PF Annissa Hastings (returning starter)
C Stacy Stephens (returning starter)
I think another interesting option would be as follows:
PG Jamie Carey (would bring experience, intelligence and additional scoring ability to the backcourt)
SG Tai Dillard (another experienced, intelligent player with SPEED and a good mid-range pull-up jumper to complement Carey's 3-pt range)
SF Heather Schreiber (a great 'swing' player who can go inside or out offensively)
PF Stacy Stephens (would put 'power' in the power forward position)
C Mercedes Williams (some early practice reports that I read say she's a terror on defense and on the boards)
Then, to complete an 8-player rotation, Nina Norman and Kala Bowers could sub on the perimeter and Annissa Hastings could rotate in the post. All three of these would bring that spark off the bench that a coach likes to have. Obviously Texas has a lot of options this year, including players that I haven't even mentioned.
As for the other questions:
Underrated player: I think Karensa Barr at MU and Stephanie Blackmon at BU are pretty good, but don't get alot of publicity.
Best defensive player: My homer vote goes to Hastings after the compliment that Stacey Dales gave her last year. Jia Perkins and Dionnah Jackson are also very tough.
Best three-point shooter: Laurie Koehn, KSU. I'm hoping Carey and Schreiber can compete for this title.
Deepest bench: UT and TTU
Coach: ???
Biggest surprise team: KMR may lead Baylor to a higher than expected finish.

Texas Tech line up
Erin Grant
Jia Perkins
Plenette Pierson
Natalie Richie, Casey Jackson, Chesley Dabbs
Cisti Greenwalt, Jolee Ayers, Jametra Clark
It seems to me that Grant Perkins and Pierson are in the Lead for the starting spots. The last couple of Practices I have been to during the 5on5 games the 3 of them have been placed on the same team and Coach Sharp has expriemented with the other 2 positions. Working and seeing who has the best chemistry with the other 3.
The other questions I don't think I can answer them because most of them would be to homie and I would answer them all with a Texas Tech player. 3 more weeks till TIP-OFF in Louisiana Tech!

My answers to my questions.
Line up for Tech
Erin Grant
Jia Perkins
Casey Jackson
Plenette Pierson
Cisti Greenwalt
Bench Jolee Ayers, Natalie Ritchie, Mik Tennal, Jametra Clark, and Chelsey Dabbs
1. Plennete Pierson, last season she was Tech's returning leading scorer and preseason All Big 12 and All American. Plennete is back with a strong will and is probably not getting the respect she should. She will get it back early in the season.
2. Jia Perkins because Marsha Sharp said she was the best defender on the USA junior team. Maria of OU could take this spot from her very early.
3. Laurie Koehn
4. Texas Tech, on the bench you will have at least one former starter,(Jolee Ayers) a great three point shooter, (Natalie Ritchie) a juco All American (Mik Tennal)if , two very athletic players in Jametra Clark and Chelsey Dabbs
5. this ones up for grabs. I suspect that the winner might come from a surprise team this year.
Personally, I think the coaches are seeing hat Tech has this year. Kansas State and Texas were very close but I think most see Techs increased talent and bench strength. I think they also taking a wait and see attitude on Plennette Pierson and Erin Grant.
One final thing,(and I hope I dont have to eat my words) but Tech will have a much greater ability to match up against K-State and Texas this year. Our athletic abitilities are greatly improved and we get K-State in Lubbock this year.

I'd tell you who'd Nebraska's starters will be, but the Huskers don't have five players yet.
1. Most underrated? Trisha Skibbe, Oklahoma State.
If Trisha was at Oklahoma, she'd be on the Wheaties box.
2. Best Defensive Player? Jia Perkins, Texas Tech.
Fast hands, very fast hands. Getting Jia in your passing lanes can kill your offense.
3. Best three point shooter in the conference?
Laurie Koehn, Kansas State. I expect some big things from her this year based on her Team USA performance.
4. Which team has the best/deepest bench?
I'll call a tie here between Texas Tech and Texas. Both teams have a lot of reserves who have some skills. Is it any wonder they will be at the top of the league this year?
5. Preseason of the Year? Connie Yori, Nebraska
She has remained upbeat. She's stuck to her guns, and she didn't beg anybody who didn't want to be there. I give her much respect for just trying to run a Formula 1 race with a Pinto.
6. Big 12's big surprise? Iowa State
Everybody wants to shovel dirt on ICBM State. All it takes is a few well-placed perimeter missiles.
plus a few extras
7. Big 12 player on the "hot seat"? Plenette Pierson, Texas Tech.
Everybody is saying the right things right now, but what happens if TTU lays an egg at Knoxville? Will we get the new Plenette? or the Prima Donna Plenette?
8. Which second division team has the best chance to move into the first division?
Missouri. Give me Barr and Unrau anyday. They'll keep you in a lot of games.
9. Who will be the Big-12's sleeper player this year?
Anissa Hastings, Texas. She isn't talked about much outside of Austin, but this kid has something worth watching.
10. Is Jamie Carey a James Street or a Chris Simms?
She's leaning toward Chris Simms right now, not because she can't play but because the questions are out there if she can play at an aggressive level where her concussion problem isn't an issue. Carey impact on Texas is slightly overrated at this point.
11. Speaking of overrated? Which Big 12 team is overrated if there is one?
Kansas State. A very talented starting corp, but #3 and Final Four possiblities? That is a stretch for a team with little depth at key positions and a little down in terms of athleticism compared to other national championship contenders.
12. Who will win more games. Kansas football or Kansas womens basketball.
Kansas womens basketball. Actually I could see them winning 12-15 ballgames this year, if they do even better look for Marian Washington to call it a beautiful career and open the door for Cheryl Burnett or Lynette Woodard.
13. Who will win more games. Nebraska football or Nebraska womens basketball.
This will be tough and could end up a tie. In fact I'll say it'll end up a tie. Each will end up winning 6 games total.
14. Is Oklahoma finished? NO!
They will not get to the Final Four, but they could get to the Sweet Sixteen.
15. Will Oklahoma finally beat Iowa State?
Of course not http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
16. Is the Big-12 the best conference in the nation top to bottom?
In terms of game play? No. In terms of attendance? Yes.
17. The Over-Under on Chipper's "No Bashing Policy"?
He'll grossly violate it after the first Iowa State-Nebraska game when the Cyclones blow them out again.
18. Who is the biggest hoopscoop homer?
It's a tightning race between Jimi and Buffsfan22
19. Did Sherri Coale gain a dress size this season?
She had to after all of those banquets, camp appearances, speeches etc.
20. What will happen first? Regime Change in Iraq or Iowa State fans not citing officiating problems in a loss?
Iraq's going to change maybe 2 or 3 regimes before that happens http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
Let the season begin.

OU's starting lineup, and this is strictly my opinion.
PG - Dionnah Jackson
SG - Chelsi Welsh
SF - Maria Villaroel
PF - Caton Hill
C - Teresa Schunecht
Answers:
1) Have to think about this one.
2) Dionnah Jackson, OU
3) Laurie Koehn, KSU....though from last year, both Skibbe and
Kate Fagan look good.
4) Texas
5) I'd say this is going to go to whoever wins the conference;
personally, I don't see a "Kansas State" team this year.
6) Hmmmmm, like mentioned above, I don't see a cinderella....
though thanks for the vote of confidence, dbtl http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
and chipper........OU will finally beat Iowa State here in Norman town, finally Coale chipping off one more "never".
Hmmmmm, is this the last "never" besides winning NC?

Projected Starters at KSU:
Nicole Ohlde, C
Kendra Wecker, F
Megan Mahoney, F/G
Laurie Koehn, G
Chelsea Domenico, G
Or Patterson may go big with Brie Madden starting at center, Ohlde to forward, Wecker to wing, Mahoney to G and Koehn at G.
Kari Hanson is out of the picture for now due to medical reasons.
1. Trisha Skibbe. She is a first rate player.
2. "Dee Action" Jackson. With all due respect to Jia Perkins, who is a great player, Jackson is better on defense.
3. Ok, do I have to limit this to just the conference? She led the NATION last year and set new conference and national records. Laurie Koehn.
4. Nebraska. Their bench has got to be the deepest. No one is sitting on it. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif KSU may be second for the same reason, besides its a heck of a ways down into the Bramlage pit till you get to the bench. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif (OK, if I have to be serious, Texas)
5. Coach of the year (not preseason) will most likley go to whoever wins the conference but Marion Washington scares me. I think she is doing a great job of setting the table for KU to rise out of last years ashes. Watch out for those pesky Jayhawks.
6. I may just be paroniod, but KU may be way better than people think. If, and I'll concede its a big if, the newcomers play up to their potential I think KU may be much stronger than last year. I still don't see them getting out of the second division but they will resemble last years OSU or they will be even better. They will not be confused with last years Jayhawks.

Colorado...
Stafford G
Fagan G
Spencer/Lappe F
Scott F
Bjorklund C is my guess for the starters.
1. Most underated player in the conference?
Tera Bjorklund, Colorado
2. Best defensive player in the conference?
Jia Perkins or Lappe
3. Best three point shooter in the conference?
Kate Fagan. Look at the stats...is top returner from last season at .476
4. Which team has the best or deepest bench??
Texas
5. Preseason coach of the year?
This one is tough. I think it should or could be anyone that is dealing with a lot of losses...OU, ISU, CU or BU.
6. Big 12's biggest surprise team of the year??
Kansas...I think they will finish higher than predicted. Or Mizzou. I think they'll be back in the tourney this year.

Projected TEXAS starters - Agree with Mooooo.
PG Jamie Carey 5'6 JR
SG Kala Bowers 6'2 SO
SF Heather Schreiber 6'2 SO
C Stacy Stephens 6'1 JR
PF Anissa Hastings 6'2 JR
Hmm. Mercedes at Center with Anissa coming off the bench? That is an interesting thought. Schreiber has been practicing with the frontcourt players some. I can also see Tai Dillard starting at shooting guard, Bowers at SF, Schreiber at PF, and Hastings coming off the bench.
QUESTIONS:
1. Most underated player in the conference?
EVAN UNRAU, Missouri. She doesn't get much press even on this board of devoted Big 12 fans. At Texas, I think KALA BOWERS is underated even by Texas fans. That may change this year.
2. Best defensive player in the conference?
ANNISSA HASTINGS, Texas. She has amazing versatility on defense. She can defend against many perimeter players and against many players several inches taller than she is.
3. Best three point shooter in the conference?
LAURIE KOEHN. Her shooting percentage is just the beginning. She has great range and you just never know when she is going to just step back and shoot it.
4. Which team has the best or deepest bench??
TEXAS TECH.
5. Preseason coach of the year?
??????
6. Big 12's biggest surprise team of the year??
MISSOURI
10. Is Jamie Carey a James Street or a Chris Simms?
My last comment on Carey and then "let the games begin". Jamie Carey has already made an impact at Texas. She makes an impact every day at practice. No matter what happens, Texas will be a better team because of Jamie Carey.

Texas Tech initial starting lineup:
PG Grant
SG Perkins
SF Jackson
PF Pierson
C Greenwalt
1. Most underated player in the conference? Toccara Williams, Texas A&M's point guard.
2. Best defensive player in the conference? Jia Perkins; but I won't be surprised if it turns out to be Erin Grant. Possibly the best defensive back court in the country.
3. Best three point shooter in the conference? Kate Fagan. Carey and Koehn are also in the hunt, although Koehn hit only 14 of 37 (37.8%) in Brazil this summer.
4. Which team has the best or deepest bench? Texas Tech
5. Preseason coach of the year? Marian Washington. (I was tempted to pick Yori, just for surviving!)
6. Big 12's biggest surprise team of the year? Kansas

Why not go out on a limb? These are my picks for starters at BU. Coach Kim may not agree however. I guess I'll just have to accept her good judgement.
Jessika Stratten
Stephnie Blackmon,
Stasha Richards,
Sophia Young
Jordan Davis
I have been impressed with the young players and look forward to the first game. Baylor will have better mobility in the paint this year and that will help them a great deal. Dionne Brown appears to be a terrific athlete and along with Abiola and Melanie, Baylor should do well inside. Hopefully, Jackson, Scott and Whittaker can make an impact at the guard position.
1. Trisha Skibbe, OSU
2. Dionnah Jackson, OU
3. Lindsey Wilson, ISU
4. Hopefully Baylor!
5. Kim Mulkey-Robertson
6. Baylor, of course! Given the fact that they lost some great players and are expected to finish down, I predict them to finish in the top 4. Last year they were picked 6th and finished in 2nd place! Coach Kim will prepare the team and they will deal their opponents much misery.

Chipper,
If Tech lays an egg in Knoxville it wont be because of Plennette. Tech is way to deep to blame a loss on one player. True it may hurt the team for her to be on the bench but not near to the extent of suspension last year. I agree that Plennette could be on the hot seat but I think and I will bet other Tech fans will agree with me that Tech is still a Big 12 contender without Plennette Pierson.
If Plennete comes out and plays the way she has done in practice she will be All Big 12 and possibly All American. She has improved improved in every phase of the game and is playing with what seems a much better attitude.

I think Toccarra Williams was on everyone's underrated list last year. She is a great defensive player.
Originally posted by carolann:

The biggest THING is, ah, er, the ball. It is mens sized in international play. I think that makes quite a bit of difference in a short practice period for a long range shooter.
I would also have to defend Koehn re: shooting percentage on the grounds that she does not look to only shoot when wide open, but is counted on for her threes every game. Its a regular part of our offense and she is expected to produce with it, not just make another team pay if they back off and fail to guard her close. And trust me, if you are #10 in purple, nobody leaves you open on purpose.

I didn't say Plenette would be blamed if TTU loses the opener. I said what happens should TTU loses as far as Plenette's attitude.
Pierson could be powerful or poisonous, the jury is still out on that one.

Tech:
Grant
Perkins
Jackson
Pierson
Greenwalt
1. Most underated player in the conference?
Trisha Skibbe, OSU
2. Best defensive player in the conference?
Action Jackson...and no, I ain't talkin about Dionnah! Ask Coach Sharp who the best one-on-one defender on her team is and she'll tell you Casey Jackson. Jia is good, but Casey has the ability to shut down the person she is guarding -- her stats may not show it, but watch her play. Perkins, Jackson, Grant, Pierson and Greenwalt in the lineup would give you one of the best defensive units in the nation and I'm pretty sure Sharp knows this too.
3. Best three point shooter in the conference?
sorry I'm being a homer -- Ritchie, TTU
4. Which team has the best or deepest bench??
Tech
5. Preseason coach of the year?
Patterson, KSU -- after Tech wins the Big 12, Sharp http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
6. Big 12's biggest surprise team of the year??
OU -- I really didn't expect them to make that much noise after losing so much, but it looks like they might be pretty damn good.

Right, Jimi. Another, "I forgot". I forgot about the different ball size in international play. None of the US players were exactly lighting it up from 3-point land in Brazil.

I forgot about Toccarra Williams to. Maybe that does indicate she really is underated. I'll still stick with Skibbe but Williams is good and she is underated.

Chipper,
I have the feeling that if Plennette's attitude from last year shows its ugly face, Plennette will be riding the pine. I dont think Marsha will hesitate to pull her from the game if she sees Plennette headed in that direction. Tech will have subs to replace her that they didnt have last year. These subs will be more athletic and or experienced than the previous year.
