I have a friend in the SA area and she has advance purchased tickets for her daughter and herself. She said as well as sporting events are supported in SA, women's professional basketball should go over well. It would be great to see another team in Texas.

I think that would be great for San Antonio to make it for a team,
I've read many who believe it may be the Utah team that would be moved...
they just haven't been able to get their attendance numbers moving.
While I'm not crazy about Houston, I loooovvveeee San Antonio and wouldn't mind at all travelling there to see a game.

I have sent my deposit in along with a couple of friends. My friend had a chat with a young woman answering telephone inquiries. The young woman was very impressed with the Longhorn fans. She said she never encountered such enthusiastic fans in Michigan where she went to college. She said many people in Detroit do not even know the Shock exist.

I've seen that WNBA is also looking into some NON-NBA cities, which would be cool. St. Louis is among the top non WNBA cities for ratings. The other cities they're considering tend to be in markets near stronger college programs (Nashville, TN for example) and the lack of interest in WBB at Mizzou can't help.
Still, we can hope!

2,600 deposits to go! I think the first 3,000 sold quickly and that is probably a marker for the truly committed fans. The last 2,600 deposits might be a real challenge.

Ah, but SMS' thousands of rabid fans would help, especially if the St. Louis team somehow acquired a certain 5'8" guard from Kansas. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Relocation of WNBA team to San Antonio may be a possibility: http://news.mysanantonio.com/story.cfm?xla=saen&xlb=1680&xlc=759439&xld=1680

At this point, I feel like it is close to 100% sure that San Antone will get their team, either through expansion or relocation.

The WNBA All-Star game was a real eye-opener for me yesterday, as there were moments in that game - which was contested with both great effort and great comraderie by both teams - that weren't just outstanding, they were transcendent.

It is obvious to me that a huge explosion in the popularity of women's professional (and amateur) basketball is well nigh upon us. If you doubt that statement, I doubt that you watched the game yesterday.

The kind of interest surge that was generated by that game should provide SA with all the impetus it needs to grab a piece of the prize - a local team of basketball athletes not ruled by overreaching egos and ridiculous underserved salaries, and one that can truly be enjoyed by entire families without breaking the family bank account.

I guess I'm done on the podium now...

I agree, YCN.....that was a great hard-fought game by both sides.

There's been talk that Utah could move....wouldn't that be cool?
Crockrum and Caufield near enough to see them play.

swok, I have good family in SA, I would LOVE to go see games there!

(PS - I don't have anything BUT good family. I just don't want anyone to think that I pick and choose based on family matters.)

Although San Antonio is closing in on number of season ticket deposits needed to get a WNBA team, other problems may lie ahead: http://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/stories/2002/09/23/newscolumn1.html

Orlando is losing its WNBA team, so the Miracle may be the team that ends up in San Antonio.
