View Full Version : Who Is Your Coach of the Year?

Just wondering what other folks think. It's been such a very interesting up and down year with teams surging ahead, then dropping back, I think that it's a good topic for discussion. I, of course, am biased. Coach Mulkey's done more with a lot less this year, but I think Coach Patterson has to be the leader in the clubhouse. Who could have expected the year that her team has had?

Thoughts?

Yeah, I agree Coach Deb has done a remarkable job this year. However, I think Wild Bill has done the best coaching I've seen from him with the loss of not one, but two key cogs in his machine.

Coach Deb, who would have thought that after all of the bashing she received when Stanley left that the season would turn out this way. If we could pull out a win Wednesday night, it would be a worse to first scenario. Pretty amazing.

Coach Fennelly has also done a great job, though.

My first reaction was Kim who has done more with less.

Much too much more for my taste ;) but .....

After reading other responses, edited to add:

There is an excellent case to be made for Deb too and I wish I could "vote" for my favorite coach who isn't Sherri: Bill who always seems to do more with less - if you measure less by scouting reports.

I think it will be Deb or Kim. Probably Deb if they win their final game.

It's a tough choice no doubt. I tend to fall into the camp that favors rewarding the coach whose team performed way above expectations rather than the coach of the best team. But there are problems with this method.

Take K.State this year. THey were picked 8th and will finish 1st or 2nd. No doubt a great job of coaching by Deb. But what if the preseason pollsters were just dead wrong. What if the Wildcats were one of the top teams in the league all along, but the coaches were just collectively blind to that fact? If this is so, does that change the thoughts on the COY choice.

Obviously it's all subjective so there's no real way to answer that. I'll play it safe and call it a tie :)

Kim
or
Deb
with definite cudos to Bill

I think it comes down to how the season finishes out. If Baylor beats OS and we win in Lawrence, I would be inclined to go with Deb. Part of it is definitely local pride, but the number 8 to sharing the conference title (yes... with our North wins and home losses to both the Bears and Sooners).

Hmmm?

Why are you all ignoring Kurt?

Maybe my view is a little off but considering how far OSU has come in the short time he has been there I think he at least deserves to be in consideration. I realize that did not all come this year but I am impressed with what is happening with the Cowgirls.

Of course as a Wildcat fan I will give him a little extra credit if he manages a win in his next game. :D

Considering her short bench, and south schedule, I'd have to let my bias come out and give it to Kim. However, if BU falters thursday and KSU wins wednesday, I'd go with Patterson.

Exactly! I thought he deserved it last year for the quick turnaround. Now I think he deserves it for not only maintaining that success, but improving from last season.

Budke certainly has to be in consideration for this honor. It is so tough to choose just one. He is in my top three with Deb and Kim. Bill is right there with Sheri and Gary in my next group of three. However; you could really argue cases for several of them. :p I would really have a hard time ranking the remaining coaches and putting one of them at the bottom. It really would be unfair for many reasons.

My vote would go to Deb. Would I have to agree with her "principles" to say that what she did was huge? Nope.

Kansas State has a chance to win a share of the Big XII.

I think that's pretty amazing. I, personally, didn't give them a chance to win much of anyting.

K-State is the biggest turnaround, Deb arguably did more with less than any other coach, turned the team around right before conference when they appeared to be falling apart, and, most importantly, this was a team that few picked as high as sixth, most picked between 8-10 and they won at OSU, A&M and UT and might share of claim the title and will finish no worse than 2nd.

I feel that this is Kim's best coaching job, but also, even with that in mind, Baylor was picked from 2nd-4th, thus the jump is not nearly as great as going from second division to the top. While Bill held his team together in the face of great odds, they couldn't quiet pull the upset against the likes of Baylor or KSU, and the Cyclones needed those wins to give him COY.

Deb Patterson is the coach of the year.

Coach of the year, not coach of the past few years, not recruiter of the year. Bill Fennelly and Kim Mulkey get honorable mention for the jobs they did considering the players they lost. But Kim was starting with a lot more on on the roster than Patterson did.

If K-State wins tonite and they either share or win the Big 12 conference, then I go with Deb as well.

But I think Kurt is also a runner up..he's done an amazing job as had Bill.

It's interesting who is not COY - not Sherri or Gary or Kathy or Gail or....
