wow that was some darn interesting video. I'm with him on one thing and that is over the back fouls. They are never called anymore and it pisses me off. I down care if your taller or bigger if you come over someone back to get a rebound the refs should blow their damn whistle.

CyRules, I wholeheartedly agree. Plumley was charged with a foul b/c she did such a good job of boxing her player out (a big height differential) that she had her fundamentally pinned behind her. However, the other player attempted to use her greater height advantage by trying to jump up and over into Jenna's allowed/created space from her textbook box out. The player was successul in tipping the ball to herself, however what goes up must come back down, and she did which resulted in her crashing back down on Jenna and the ball was then dislodged and went out of bounds.
Instead of rewarding OU with the ball to inbounds, the ref standing under the basket blew his whistle and called Jenna for a foul. Jenna had correct position, and if anything the official who blew his whistle should have called an over-the-back foul against other player.
I'm creating quite the bald spot on my head this season from all of the head scratcher type calls I've seen in many games (not just OU's).

I saw that video at the gym last night - he was out of control. I'm not a fan of his.
Regardless of fouls he was frustrated with....If he can't control his frustration, how can he expect his team to control themselves. If I were his boss, I'd have a little chat with him about his behavior.

Not disagreeing with anything in this thread at all. However, I want to suggest reading this link (below). It discusses the common misconception about "over the back" which isn't illegal at all:

Thanks Matt .... I knew I had read that there was no such violation as " over the back " but I couldn't find a reference.

Interesting video, indeed! Has anyone seen footage of the game? Does he have a beef?

Height does not give anyone an advantage, and neither does size. But, I have noticed that there are people that can get away with anything when going for the rebound. Even when displacing people when going for the ball, they do not get fouls called.
Plumley got the foul because she was holding "the other girl's" arm. Not because she was shorter and had good position. It had nothing to do with the rebound, more with the contact following the rebound.
And there are people who simply can not do anything right and get fouls called for simply playing defense.

A different take from Graham Hays (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/columns/story?columnist=hays_graham&id=3272127)
What's rather more profoundly saddening is the latest example of how quickly fans and media -- including ESPN, which exploited the video clip to full effect --
They completely missed the kind of coach many complain is a dying breed.
He didn't demean anyone. He didn't belittle anyone. And that's more than can be said for many of those who latched on to the video as a way to fill segments or boost hits.
Graham is right. The coach went overboard but that's no reason to call him names.

Some Tech fans have their drawers in a wad over Curry's comment calling out her post players for having 14 turnovers alone. They would be in heaven with this kind of negativity.

Thanks Matt. I guess I'm one of many who have always thought "Over the Back" was a foul, and I played the game since I was old enough to join a team.
After reading this piece, it started making me think back to when I could've developed this incorrect interpretation. The article said its origin probably came from talking heads such as Dick Vitale or Billy Packer many years ago. Although "many years ago" doesn't specify when this cry of foul began, I can remember back in 1975 through '77; when my older sister played for Mustang, OK; hearing the older men who, as a young boy, looked like farmers in overalls and John Deere hats raining down boos and "over the back ref!!!!" yells of fury from small Okla. HS gym's stands.
But back to the original post, I read all of the reader's comments from what I think was the B10 Network's web site that hosted the editted video of the press conference. Apparently, the uninterrupted/uneditted version gives a viewer a different reaction. And another interesting thing was all of the Green Bay, WI fans weighing in on how lucky Michigan was to have such a passionate coach. It definitely gave me a different perspective.

That's hilarious! That description is right on. I don't think much has changed since the 70s. I can remember the exact same thing in the 90s and early 00s. And if it wasn't a John Deere hat, it was a Ducks Unlimited hat or something like that. :rotflol:

Thanks Matt - that is one of the fan cries which bugs me the MOST! I just want to tell em to stick a sock in it - and I would be glad to bring a whole bunch of very dirty socks collected from playgrounds and gyms for them to use. :) Yep - it really bugs me.
Actually - I think the current crop of fans learn it from pay-by-play guys. I can't begin to guess how many times I have heard one of them use the phrase. Of COURSE, I've never heard it out of YOUR mouth - or Rayn's ;)
