After reading about all the OU ACL's I thought I would pose this question to the group. I coach high school girls basketball. We have a junior that tore her ACL in a game last season. She has played volleyball, but is thinking of not playing basketball because she doesn't want to hurt her knee again.

Has anyone had the experience she has in that you were afraid of hurting it again, and how did you overcome that?

I know this doesn't necessarily deal with Big 12 hoops, but with the increase in ACL injuries or at least the publicity of them now, they seem to be having a drastic effect on the teams.

I tore the ACL in my left knee about 12 years ago. I had it surgically repaired, but for many years I was certainly afraid that I would re-injure it or that I would even injure my other knee. For the first 3 or 4 years I wore a brace whenever I participated in any sporting activity (even tennis). At some point, though, I kinda got over it and now play tennis without a brace and don't even think twice about it. If I were to go skiing, however, I think that I would probably still wear the brace. I don't know that the brace actually offers much protection, but it does serve as a reminder of sorts for me to not get to carried away.

Susan Harman of the Ames Tribune wrote a wonderful article detailing Erica Junod's ACL tear, surgery, rehab, and return. It's a great read for someone going through an injury like that.
