View Full Version : Chipper's Eye View: THINK PINK WEEKEND

At the practice court in Lincoln, Nebraska -- Kelsey Griffin practices her post moves. Her mind is on how to score against Maria Cordero. She's thinking about what to do if Andrea Riley breaks loose and makes a drive for the basket.
She's also thinking about her dad in Alaska...

In Ames, Iowa...A fan base loves their head coach, Bill Fennelly....And a wife and children are very happy just to have their dad. A year ago..they were worried that they may not.

In North Carolina...Kay Yow is looking at her attack options against two opponents...One of the court. One inside her body. And she's not alone...8 other Division I womens basketball head coaches are preparing for two battles at the same time.

In New York...A great face of our game..who's rose to so much more is winning her battle. Go get 'em Robin Roberts!

In California...Edna Campbell is talking about home loan options with a client..A lot of pictures of her past as a WNBA guard adorn her office. Including a plaque for being "Most Inspirational"...because of battle she won that nearly derailed a lot more than her basketball career.

In Massachusetts...A mom sits in a room that is a shrine to the hoops exploits of a daughter..at the same time the daughter is courtside interviewing a coach. Knowing mom is watching...grateful that mom has an opportunity to watch. Mindful of a time when that opportunity may not happen.

In some children's hospital somewhere...There's a little one with a hoop dream. Clutching a basketball, looking to play again. But also clutching to dear life...with bald head, a little fear and a lot of courage....and just down the hall there may be someone much older...but with that same fear and that some courage.

The common link here is cancer. You would be hard pressed to find a person who isn't touched by it, a family who isn't touched by it.
Our sport has been touched by it. My team has recently by touched by it.

One of the great things about college basketball in recent years as been the way that so many in the game have rallied around this cause of beating cancer and have been effective in getting the basketball community together to raise awareness and raise funds for treatment and research.

So much has been done. So much good news. Survival rates for most forms of cancer are moving up fast. Raised awareness yielding earlier diagnosis when combined with treatment is a slam dunk for life.

But so much more needs to be done...and this is where us fans take off the sweats and get on the floor.

This weekend's play begins WBCA Think Pink Week. From February 8-17, games will be dressed in proud pink to raise awareness. Over 800 teams, including the entire Big XII Conference are a part of this initiative, and us fans also need to be a part...In fact all of us can be the MVP.

But just don't think pink...THINK GREEN! Give up that hot dog at the concession stand. Share a program with somebody. When they pass the hat, but some greenbacks in it. Awareness is key, but to win this fight it'll take research...and that takes money. When they pass the hat at the arena, ante up and kick in!

Think Pink. Beat Cancer.

A special note: Sunday's Oklahoma State/Nebraska game is a part of ESPN's "February Frenzy" coverage. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with the Jimmy V Foundation will be running a fundraiser during the "February Frenzy" coverage.

Right now this ugly disease has hit two people close to me. One has passed away last week. Such a dreadful disease.

My Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in August. She completed her chemotherapy on January 10 after undergoing a full mastectomy back in September. A PET Scan done a week ago showed she is cancer free. We got lucky, but so many others are not as fortunate.

As Chipper said:

Excellent post, chipper. You've been rather quiet this year.

I wonder if they can get ISU super-fan Wild Bill Yougclas to wear pink? I would pay to see that.

Way to go :ISU:

I hope they're selling pink T-shirts at the Huskers authentic on Sunday. I don't have any pink T-shirts on hand, but I did get a pink wristband and a glow-necklace at the gymnastics meet last night.

I have some good news and thought I'd share it with y'all since this thread is an appropriate place for it.

I let y'all know a couple of months ago, that my mom was having a biopsy done b/c of two spots that showed up on her right breast.

The good news is it's not cancerous!!! They were sure it was going to be, b/c of the way both masses looked in their tests. It turns out that they are old hematomas from two separate bad falls she's had where she's injured herself. We were so relieved when we heard the good news.

Now having experienced this fight up close and personal, my prayers and thoughts go out even more deep to all that have been affected by this disease.

tx4ou--GREAT news!

I personally have the privilege of spending a week of my summer at a camp for children currently fighting or in remission from cancer. Besides many other things it provides, a dose of perspective is always a sharp reminder of how blessed I am to have my health.

I think it's awesome that this has grown to be such a BIG deal--lots of $$ and awareness.

From a News OK story:

"in Oklahoma, "Think Pink” is even extending to the high school and middle school levels.

"Coale played a part in putting forth a letter inviting state high schools to join in the cause with something as simple as wearing pink shoestrings.

"We know of at least 90 here in the state,” she said"

I think they grabbed the Final Four Choos from the trophy case for the picture. Surely the Tuesday night ones will be pink.

I finally decided to post on this thread. It's very difficult for me to talk about as this disease has touched my family on a very personal level. My mom who is a poster on this board and my grandmother on my mom's side are both breast cancer survivors so this awareness of this issue is very close to my heart. Today at the ISU men's game it was very cool to see a sea of cyclone alley decked out in pink. The rest of the crowd wasn't very pink, but at the women's game almost everyone was decked out in pink. I asked cyclone alley for a shirt and was given one for free. I was going to give them $20 for a shirt so I took that money and donated it for this cause. At one timeout they asked for survivors to stand and then people affected by this to stand and nearly everyone did. It was a very emotional moment for me and it took a few minutes before I could focus on the action on the court. It was a great day for a great cause.

NOPE - GRIN The final four's are what i call flip flop sandal heels - a wide strap over the toes and a sole with heel & dat's all folks - LOL totally impossible to walk in except for the committed.

I would bet that in person, they are PINK - a hot pink :) BTW - Coach said that as good as last year's Converse were, the Choo's would be a LOT harder to give up and that she was already mourning them - and in fact was thinking about going home and putting them on.

Opening Bid is $750. No one has placed a bid. Will OU have a variation of pink uniforms? Will the Aggies?
