It's odd seeing different teams at the top . . .

Thanks for the link. That is a different pre-season top ten than we are used to seeing. It almost seems a little weird to see K-State in it, but then again they were top ten (10) at the end of last year and since then Texas, K-State and Tech have all gotten more ink through USA Basketball. I don't know where we will finish but I sure am looking forward to the ride. GO BIG 12!!!!

Whoa, I think Texas is going to be good next year, but #4? Don't know about that.

Funny how much more comfortable it feels to start out with lower outside expectations and try to prove people wrong.

That's why I'm so excited for the ISU season! With Welle and Gahan graduating nobody expects much from ISU, even though three starters remain and Anne O'Neil will be eligible. The pressure is off but I think the team will be great. Perhaps not top-10, but I bet they'll be top-20 when the season is over.

Oklahoma will likely be all over the map with regards to rankings in the preseason. Some will not even mention OU, but I would think the AP and ESPN/USA Today will have OU probably ranked too high simply because OU got to the championship game last year.

After looking over this "home-boys" online magazine's website, I don't think I'd take this one seriously at all.

Which poll should we take seriously? http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

Obviously, only those that rank TTU ahead of UT. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Way to go Big XII!!! Hook 'em Horns on the high ranking!! I know this is only one of several, but I am glad to see UT back in the national spotlight. I think OU will definitely be in the mix as well. Looking forward to the start of the season!!!

Lofty pre-season rankings make me a little skidish and tend to send fans into a frenzy with lofty expectations. I prefer to start in the 10-12 postions to start, then move up as the season goes on when teams really prove their worth on the court. I suspect it adds some unnecessary pressure to the team as well as a bulls eye on their jersey. Teams have to be ready each night to defend those rankings for sure.
This should be another fun year for B12 WBB.

This should be another fun year for B12 WBB. Sorry....don't know what happened on the last one, but I will try again. I agree...I think the high rankings causes all sorts of problems. I would rather UT be ranked a little lower and sneak up on teams, but I guess I just couldn't contain my excitement, since this high ranking is the first one in a loooonnngg time!!!

I'm perfectly happy with a #9 to start the season. That puts us in the top ten and takes off some of the pressure. What I want to see is #1 at the end of the season!

Heck yeah, enjoy it!
I for one welcome the extra attention and lofty expectations. I hope the team welcomes it as well. It has been well over a decade since UT has received this kind of attention. It should give the players a license (so to speak) to believe that they belong in the final four and the motivation to work hard to get there.
Teams such as UConn and Tennessee seem to be able to operate quite successfully with a target on their backs. There's no reason we shouldn't also.

I think the Big 12 conference will do quite well in the polls. I like to see more Big 12 teams fighting for a final berth. Hopefully, the selection committee will spread out the Big 12 teams for that chance.
I know that when ISU was ranked as high as #4, I had the feeling that you could almost never celebrate a victory -- they were the favorite in just about every single game they played! It seemed as if every time they won, you could only feel relieved that they hadn't suffered a loss of face. And if they had a tough game and still won, it usually felt like a loss. On the other hand, when they were ranked relatively low and had to fight their way up the list, you could get really excited about a victory over a tough opponent.
I remember when Baylor knocked off Iowa State in Waco and had a jubilant on-court celebration. The thought that occurred to me then was that for ISU to be able to celebrate that way, they pretty much would have to beat a UCONN-level opponent. It got so that if they weren't beating a top-10 team, it was pretty much a "routine" victory -- just another day at the office.
I think there is a lot to be said for being the hunter, rather than the hunted. That big target on your back that goes with a top-five ranking means that you are guaranteed to get every opponent's absolute best effort every time out. Too often you end up playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. That's when you're in danger of not playing up to your potential.
