I was advised today by the OU WBB office the 2002-2003 schedule will be published in the Wednesday editions of the local newspapers. Finally!!

Wow, the Big XII media relations office is way ahead of last year on this one! I think it was something like September 9 last year before the schedules were finalized.

That's too close to a very painful date, so maybe the league felt a bit of incentive to release dates earlier this year.

Information is starting to trickle in. The Norman Transcript article reads:

"The always-rugged conference schedule begins Jan. 11 and is highlighted by home and away meetings with Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor and rival Oklahoma State. The Sooners will host North Division foes, and NCAA tourney participants from a season ago, Kansas State (Feb. 1), Iowa State (Feb. 22) and visit Colorado (Feb. 16)."

But, Transcript Sports Editor, Justin Harper, who usually has his facts straight, made one huge blunder in the article. He wrote the following:

"OU’s 2002-03 schedule — released Tuesday — includes heavyweights Tennessee, Stanford, Southeast Missouri State and a possible matchup with national champion Connecticut."

Um, I believe Justin was thinking about SouthWEST Missouri St., not SouthEAST Missouri St. OU plays SE Missouri St. which has no where near the tradition SMSU does, obviously.

I thought the same thing, schooner.........great schedule for a young team. I think some are speculating that TCU could win over OU..and I think SMU will also be a good test, that's in addition to some of the heavy-handedness in Tennessee, Stanford and some of the matchups in Hawaii. Only wish they could get both exhibition games in before meeting Tennessee. Last year they played both exhibition games before meeting Purdue and the improvement in chemistry was obvious from one exhibition game to the next. And ending the Big XII with the last 2 on the road, ouch!!

I agree, elfdenmom.........when I lived in Louisiana, LSU always scheduled Stephen F. Austin....I think maybe Coach Gunter used to coach there.

I'm glad OU's scheduled them, I've always like watching SFA play, though, as you say, they always field a good team. This schedule is starting to look a little rough for a young team.

Wonder if Sherri won't try to schedule some exhibition in quickly before Tennessee. They can almost do that on a moment's notice and there are plenty of good NAIA and other type of teams in Oklahoma to play. It's just all those other teams are probably only beginning to practice themselves.

I haven't heard of Tennessee doing what Vandy did and playing overseas during the summer. Obviously that would help a tremendous amount. So Tennessee is probably in the same boat as OU. But since OU will be relying, heavily, on at least 3 players (probably more) that have not even played for OU, yet alone start for OU - well, that should mean that OU will be fighting team chemistry problems for the first couple of months. Based on that, I would be rather suprised if OU beat Tennessee. I'm a huge believer in experience and team chemistry. But the main thing is the TV exposure and experience of playing Tennessee. That really helps on down the road.

Maybe. But SFA has been uncharacteristically down the past couple of years. OU whalloped them a couple of years ago I believe.

This schedule sucks! Practically every game I want to see is on a Wed, both home and away games. There HAS to be a way to set up big games on Saturdays! OU plays UT and Tech on Wed's - home and on the road. How annoying! The Big 12 really needs to call me and let me help with the schedule. Really.

Amanda, it always seems the league has no idea what it is doing when it comes to scheduling. You would think they would try to schedule the "BIG" games on weekends, so that fans would fill the arenas and attendance would go through the roof! I understand that all the big games wouldn't be able to fit onto the weekend rotation, but the Big XII can do better! It seems like every year, Iowa State has the majority of games that could draw huge numbers on weeknights (i.e. Oklahoma, Baylor, etc...), although we did get Texas Tech on a Saturday.

I don't get it... last year we went to Norman for the first match-up, then OU came to Austin for the second game. According to what is posted in this thread, it is the same way this year. Seems like it has always changed up in previous seasons.

Yah sure, and I supppose next you are going to want some of those "Big" games on TV instead of the "carefully selected" ones we had last year? http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

And sigh, apparently K-State is not a "Big" game. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif Maybe Iowa State and Kansas State will have to beat you for dissing us Yankee's like this. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

Seriously it looks like a very respectable schedule. GO BIG XII

February 12? Darn, a Wednesday.

Will you Okies please at least keep the snow away. Last season, I had to cancel trip to Norman at the last minute for fear of getting lost in a drift north of the Red River. Tell you what, I'll guarantee no snow in Waco for the Sunday, January 26 game; now you guarantee that I'll be able to get to and from Norman without chains and/or a plow.

It's really been wierd all the bad weather days we've had for home games over the past two years. And it really hurts attendance.

In all seriousness, if anyone is coming up I-35 to Norman, PLEASE be careful between Purcell (about 20 or so miles south of Norman) and Norman. 8 people have been killed on that small stretch of highway in 4 separate accidents over the past 1-2 months. Sadly an entire family of 5 was killed when a semi rear-ended them in a construction zone. BE CAREFUL!

Here are my BOLD http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif predictions for the Sooners.

November
10 1-@ Tennessee (ESPN) --L-- If this game was in February, I'd say OU had a good shot at a W, it will be closer than Tenn likes but OU just won't have enough time to work out the kinks.
22 2-vs. Tulsa --W--
23 2-vs. Oral Roberts --W--
26 vs. Sam Houston State --W--
29-Dec.1 @Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic --W--, --W--, If Coale can find someone to guard Taurasi: --W--

December
5 Stephen F. Austin --W-- Sorry EDM, this won't even be close
9 @ Wichita State --W--
14 @ TCU --W--, TCU may actually have talent that matches up but OU has intangibles
21 SMU --W--
28 Southeast Missouri State --W--

January
3 @ Stanford --Game called off as Susan King sympathizers storm the court and refuse to yield, demanding Caufield's head on a platter.

Not BOLD enough to pick conference games yet.

I agree with you, DblT81, on most of your predictions, but I think OU will still come up short against UConn. Also, if I were in the area, I'd certainly make it to the TCU game. I won't be so bold as to pick TCU, but OU better be ready to play for that game.

I agree with you TXNOS. I saw the tv playoff game between TCU and Duke. They gave Duke all the wanted for at least three quarters.

I'm not backing down on Stephen F. Austin either. The really tough scrappy team Tech saw in the playoffs last year was a lot better than those in the last few years. I feel pretty certain that OU will win, but it isn't going to be a walkover.
